EPISODE ELEVEN: "LEAVING ON A TRAIN"

Scott arrives at the office. He walks out of the elevator and over to Valerie's desk. "Can I see you in my office? I need to discuss something with you," he asks Valerie. Before she can respond, he walks into his office, throwing his door opened and against the wall. Scott flings his briefcase and jacket onto the sofa and walks over to the bar and pours himself a drink.
Valerie
follows him into the office without saying anything and just watches him drink
the drink and then pick up the bottle and take a swig from it. "Good
morning. I slept okay. And you?" Valerie sarcastically snips at
Scott. An unamused Scott looks over at Valerie and takes another swig from
the bottle. "You wanted to see me, Scott?"
"Yes, Valerie. I did," he responds. "You're fired. I'm leaving Baltimore and going to New York and you're fired." Valerie just stands and stares at Scott in disbelief. "You can't do this, Scott. I need this job. How am I going to pay my rent? How am I going to live?" Valerie asks as she starts to shake. Valerie sits down on the sofa next to Scott's briefcase.
"I don't give a damn, Valerie. I don't give a damn about anything anymore. Not you. Not this company. Not Catrina. No one. Nothing," Scott tells her. "I'll pay you for the rest of the day, Valerie. Pack your stuff and leave." Valerie stands up and starts to walk toward Scott. "Now, Valerie. Leave now." She stops and turns and walks out of his office. Scott takes another drink from the bottle and then walks over to the office door and slams it closed. He takes yet another drink and leans against the door. He slides down the door and sits onto the floor, dropping the bottle and placing his head in his hands.

In Charles
Village, Catrina and Brooke are sitting at a table at a cafe. "So you
just told him 'no' without an explanation?" Brooke asks Catrina.
"Yes, Brooke. I can't marry him. I would never be able to trust
him again. I've thought about this through and through and there's just no
other way. Scott and I have to be over. We have to be completely
over now," Catrina responds to Brooke.
Brooke takes a sip of her coffee and looks at Catrina. "I don't buy it, Cat. You love him. You love him more than anything. That has to be worth something," Brooke tells her. Catrina just looks down at her coffee. "If your love for him isn't a good enough reason for you, then nothing ever could be."

At the University of
Baltimore, just outside the Student Union building, Holly is sitting on a bench
reading one of her textbooks. "Final exam
today?"
Paul asks as her walks over to the bench. Holly looks up in
surprise. "Paul? Hey, how are you?" she asks
him. Paul, obviously nervous talking to Holly, answers, "I'm
well. I'm getting ready to fly to Berkley for a week. I'm going to
make my decision after that."
"That's great, Paul. I'm so happy for you," Holly tells him. Paul nervously excuses himself and walks away. Holly watches as he walks away from her, turning back to look at her several times. "I miss you so much Paul. I miss you so much," Holly tells herself.

In Mt. Vernon, Bret arrives at Brooke and Kyle's apartment. Kyle opens the door and invites Bret to sit down and offers him some coffee. Bret kindly accepts the offer and Kyle runs into the kitchen. "Cream and sugar, Bret?" Kyle asks from the other room. "Black is fine, Kyle. Thank you," Bret responds from the couch in the living room.
Kyle prepares
the coffee and then sits on the chair across from Bret. "What can I
do for you, Bret? When you called you
said you needed a favor?" Kyle asks. Bret takes a drink of the
coffee and hesitates a minute. "I need a place to stay for a while
and I thought maybe you had an apartment available in one of your Mt. Vernon
buildings," Bret asks.
"Sure, Bret. Anything for you. You know that. I have a one bedroom place that should be ready within the week. When do you need it?" Kyle asks. Bret takes another sip of coffee and explains to Kyle, "Since the whole incident with Jamie and John at the hospital, Jamie hasn't been right. I need to give her space. The sooner the better."
"Okay, so I'll draw up the paperwork and we'll meet on Friday." Kyle reaches for a pen and piece of paper. He writes something on the paper and then hands it to Bret. "Here's the address. How about around noon?" Bret agrees and stands up. He takes one last drink of coffee. "I need to go. I'm already late and have a busy day," Bret tells Kyle. He reaches out and offers his hand to Kyle, who reciprocates. "Thanks, Kyle. I knew I could count on you. I'll see you on Friday--if not before then at The Brew."
Kyle walks Bret to the front door and he leaves. Kyle watches him walk down the sidewalk to his car parked a few houses down from there. As Bret drives by, he beeps his car horn and waves to Kyle. Kyle waves back and just watches as Bret turns the corner at Charles Street. As Kyle stands there, a man walks out of the house next door. "Hey there, Kyle. How are you?" Kyle smiles and returns the greeting. He watches the man start jogging down the sidewalk. Kyle is staring at the man until the phone breaks his stare.

Later that
afternoon, at the Brew, Kyle walks into the bar. Kristine is behind the
bar stocking the coolers. She turns and looks over at Kyle when she hears
the door. "Hey there. What are you doing here? I thought
Alex was working today?" Kristine asks Kyle. "Yeah, well,
he needed to do something so he asked me to cover for him," Kyle tell
her. "Oh," Kristine responds disappointedly. "I'll be
in the office if anyone needs me,
Kristine,"
Kyle says as he heads up the steps. Kristine just watches as Kyle walks up
the steps.
A few minutes later, a very attractive guy walks into the bar and over to Kristine. "Hi there. We don't open for another half hour," Kristine tells him as she continues to stock the cooler. "I'm actually here about the ad for a bartender," the guy responds. "Oh," Kristine tells him, "we've already filled that position."
"Well, we might have something," Kyle says as he walks across the room. Kyle puts out his hand to greet the man, "Kyle Fletcher. I'm the owner of The Brew." The guy shakes Kyle's hand, "Jason Wells. I'd like to be a bartender of The Brew." Kristine watches the two interact. "I was actually just heading down the street to grab a bite for lunch. If you have some time, we could do the interview over lunch," Kyle asks. The guy accepts and Kristine just watches the two walk toward the door. Kyle turns to her and tells her, "If anyone calls, I have my cell phone. See you in a bit Kristine."
As the two leave the front door of The Brew, Kristine continues to stare. "What in the hell was that all about? We're not hiring anyone right now," she says to herself.

At a hospital just north of Baltimore in the county, Jamie gets off the elevator and walks down the hallway. She comes to a door. "Dr. Geraldine Rochlin," Jamie says as she reads the nameplate on the door. "This is it. Your therapy, Jamie. You have officially lost your mind. Here goes everything," Jamie continues before opening the door and heading into the office.
That night, in Bolton Hill, Alex and Holly are sitting in her living room talking. "I feel just terrible, Holl. I caused all of this. It's my fault Paul left," Alex tells her. "No, no, Alex. My relationship with Paul had been in trouble for some time. It just needed a catalyst. It it wasn't the situation with you and Valerie, it would have been this whole deal with him going to Berkley in the fall," Holly responds.
"Well, I still can't help but feel responsible," Alex tells her.
"I don't want to talk about this anymore, Alex. Tell me what's been
happening with you," Holly tells him. "Well," Alex
says. "I kind of did something earlier this week I shouldn't
have." Holly begs him to tell her. "Well, you know that
new bartender at work, Kristine. Well, we got drunk the other night while
we were working--it was slow--and I woke up in her apartment the next
day."
"Oh no. What happened?" Holly asks. Alex laughs in disbelief of himself, "I don't even remember. I'm supposed to be at work right now, but I had Kyle go in today so I wouldn't have to face her until I know what really happened."
As the two continue to talk, Valerie watches them from the window, gripping her car keys so tightly that they gouge the skin in the palm of her hands and make her bleed.
At Penn Station on the northern boundary of Mt. Vernon, Ashley walks from her office and to the elevator. The elevator takes her to first floor and she walks out into the train station itself. As she is walking through the lobby, she see Scott at the ticket window. She walks over and up to him from behind. "I hear the Keys are beautiful this time of year," she says to him to get his attention.
Scott turns around and smiles when he realizes it's Ashley. "Ash," he says while he's hugging her, "I haven't seen you in so long. How are you doing? You look fantastic." Ashley smiles and begins to tell him, "My new office is upstairs and things are really going great. I'm finally at the top of my own game, Scott." They both smile and she continues, "So where are you off to this late at night?"
Scott hesitates. He looks around the station and then at Ashley. "I'm leaving, Ash. I'm leaving Baltimore." Ashley looks at him with surprise. "Leaving? What do mean?" Scott looks at his ticket. "I'm going to be working in the New York office now. There's nothing left for me in Baltimore now, Ash. Nothing." An announcer comes over the loud speaker to announce the arrival of the Metroliner from Washington to New York. Scott hugs Ashley. "That's me. I'll call you. I promise." Scott hurries down the station toward the track where his train is about to board.
Ashley watches him for a second and then as she turns to leave she bumps into a rushing Catrina. "Excuse me, I'm so--" Ashley begins. "Catrina?" Catrina looks at Ashley, "Have you seen Scott?" Ashley explains to Catrina that she was just talking to him. "I have to find him before it's too late," Catrina tells her.
As Catrina walks away and in the wrong direction, Ashley calls out to her. "Catrina?" Catrina turns. "He's on Track E. But hurry! The train could be boarding and pulling out any second now." Catrina quickly turns and runs for Track E of the station as Ashley watches.
On the platform by the train track, the train has already started boarding by the time Catrina gets down there. She runs onto the train and into the closest car to her. "Scott, Scott. Wait you can't leave," she calls out in the car. One of the attendants grabs her and asked for her ticket. "I--I don't have one." The man instructs to her to leave the departing train and begins to guide her to the exit.
Once outside on the platform, Catrina watches as the doors close and the train begins to pull away. She watches the train pull out of the station and head toward its New York City destination. She starts to cry.
As she puts her head down, she feels a hand on her shoulder. "Cat?" Scott says. Catrina turns around and Scott is standing there. Catrina looks at him and cries more. "Why aren't you on the train, Scott?" Scott holds up his cell phone. "A friend called and said not to go--she told me you were here and you were looking for me."
Catrina grabs Scott and continues to cry. "I love you, Scott. I love you so much." Scott starts to cry as well.
