COMMENTARY ON THIS WEEK'S TOP 50:
For songs I hear--or have heard--on XM satellite radio, I've added 'XM RADIO VERSION' to their mix lists...I understand that the versions listed as XM may be the same as other versions of the song I may have listed...
Chart Action...in my opinion, the past few months and seen relatively little chart action...sure, the Top 50 pace has picked up a bit in the last few weeks, but there just isn't a whole lot of great stuff out there right now...this week, five more tunes debut on the Top 50 but the verdict is really out on whether any of these songs will become bonafide chart hits...of the five entries, the DEBUT HIT probably has the greatest chance at chart success...Amber is no stranger to chart-topping success but "You Move Me" follows several chart disappointments from her last album NAKED...this tune could take her back to the heights of such classics as "Sexual" and "One More Night," but it's still unclear how well the tune will hold up over time...it comes in this week at #39...Reggae artist and a chart hit-maker on Billboard's Top 40 and Album charts, Kevin Lyttle makes his debut on the Top 50 thanks to various remixes of his debut hit "Turn Me On"...the song comes in at #44...Don't call her baby--her name is Cheyne Coates...the lead vocalist from Madison Avenue, who saw their ultimate chart success with "Don't Call Me Baby," makes her solo Top 50 debut with "I've Got Your Number," a likable enough tune that should has at least some moderate chart success...Kelly Clarkson debuts her latest offering "Breakaway" at #48...Clarkson has had a mixed bag of success on the Top 50 but all of her hits (except for a live version of "Without You" from AI season one) has made it to the top 20...finally, Jason Walker, who bubbled under for months with "My Life" enters the Top 50 for the first time with the groovy dance tune "Foolish Mind Games"...the song comes in at #49...
Mindy Smith's Rein-a might be over...Smith scores an eighth week atop the Top 50 as "One Moment More" holds on for a second week (her first two hits both spent three weeks at #1)...next week, however, Reina's second top 2 hit is poised to take over the top spot...following the #2 success of "No One's Gonna Change You," Reina's "If I Close My Eyes" is up four to the runner-up position on the chart...there will also be tough competition in the next few weeks from Debby Holiday's "Dive" (up five to #5) and Therese's "Time" (up six to #6)...Seduction also scores a top 10 hit with "Feel Brand New," up to #9 this week...it's the trio's first top 10 hit in over a decade...
Rising again...Gabrielle is making her way through the chart with the second official single from PLAY TO WIN...on the heels of two #1 hits--"Sometimes" and "Stay the Same," Gabrielle scores COMBO HIT for the second consecutive week with "Ten Years Time" and could easily score her next top 10 hit next week...Rachel Stevens assaults the chart with her fourth solo Top 50, "Some Girls," moving up to #30 and taking AIRPLAY HIT...dance act V scores the SALES HIT this week, moving up to #38 with "Hip to Hip"...
As I said, it's been a really slow summer musically so I'm not going to right too much more...Look for more updates coming as I try to get caught up before my semester begins in September...
