Still Standing Strong...Aubrey stays atop the chart for a sixth straight week, making "Stand Still" the second longest-running #1 song of 2001, one week shy of tying Kylie Minogue's 7-week reign with "Your Disco Needs You"...Aubrey is facing some stiff competition from a lot of music and has created a clog of songs in the top 20...in past weeks, it has been a toss-up for the top spot with a very close race, but with my listening down overall this week, Aubrey is clearly and easily the winner...It was a busy week and that shows on the chart as there isn't much in the way of big chart movement...hopefully next week will allow for more interesting chart shifts...

The Music's Not First in the US...I just read an announcement that Cher will perform "Song for the Lonely" at the AMA's in January...I suppose this means that with the lack of success of "The Music's No Good Without You" in Europe, her label has opted to go with another tune for the first single to LIVING PROOF...I ordered the album yesterday and should see it in about a week...Having the cd could help to push Cher into the top spot...Thanks to Marc Nathan for referring me to www.cd-wow.com ...I also finally ordered my own copy of Erasure's LOVEBOAT for US$9.95...the Cher album only cost me US$12.95...

I Never Dreamed...Gabrielle continues to hold tight to two positions in the top 5 as "Don't Need the Sun..." holds #3 for a third week with no hint at letting go anytime soon...the song is the first release from DREAMS CAN COME TRUE, her GH package...her previous #1 smash "Out of Reach" is at #5 for the second consecutive week...

Color Me Pink...The only forward movement in the top 10 belongs to Pink's fun "Get the Party Started" single...with Rick Astley's "Sleeping (Remix)" slipping a bit and falling back to #7, Pink is garnered the opportunity to advance to #6 this week...with the BSB beginning to lose steam with "Drowning," which holds #4 for a second week, I expect Pink's hit will begin to chip away at the solid top 3...her ability to break the stronghold at the top of the chart? well, at this point, it's unknown...

Into the New Year...The Sugababes continue their assault on the chart as they score their fourth consecutive top 20 hit with "New Year"...2001 has been good to the girls as they've racked up two #1 hits and a top 5 smash...they scored a top 30 hit in 2000...I expect their latest chart hit will take them well into 2002 and we'll see if ONE TOUCH can score anymore chart hits...

Can't Get You Off of the Chart...Kylie Minogue has been unfortunate in that a lot of her songs chart high and big but quickly fall out of the Top 50 when a newer release enters the chart...This was seemingly the pattern of "Can't Get You Out of My Head" a few weeks ago, but with the arrival of my copy of FEVER and my insistence that I will grow to love the album with more listens, the song is able to rebound into the top 20 and is looking fairly strong...the song has been a worldwide hit and is certainly worthy of immense chart success...I expect the song to continue its ascent--at least until another song on the album grabs my attention...also, look for the possibility of "Disco Down" from LIGHT YEARS to surface on the Top 50...

Little Girl Returns to the Top 20...Tori Amos hits the top 20 for the third time this week as "Strange Little Girl" moves up to #20...Amos previously hit the top spot with "Crucify" and the top 10 with "Silent All These Years"...in retrospect, she should have made the survey with other hits like "Cornflake Girl" and especially the excellent 2000 dance remix of "Jackie's Strength," but my attentions were elsewhere and both songs failed to chart...

Blowing up the Chart...Christopher Cross is definitely "Ride[ing] Like the wind" with the 2001 dance mix of his early 80's hit...the song easily snatches COMBO HIT and rockets thirteen positions in a rather stale chart week...The song lands at #25 and should easily be in the top 10 in the coming weeks...

Reba Makes You Laugh At Survival...Reba has always been a force in the music industry...she has scored Top 50 hits like "Fancy," "And Still," and my personal fave, "She Thinks His Name Was John"...This week, the single from her latest greatest hits package soars ten places to #29 but there's more to this song that radio and sales success...the song is the theme music to her absolutely hysterical new WB sitcom title REBA...it airs on Friday night at 9pm on The WB and I haven't missed an episode...if you have a TIVO or a VCR, program this one on your watch list..."I'm a Survivor," says Reba as she adds TV to her list of conquests--including music and theatre...

The Kids Have All Grown Up...Sure they have but this song never loses its appeal...Kim Wilde's 80's anthem takes AIRPLAY HIT this week and moves up nine positions to #21..."Kids in America 2001" is an update of the original and a welcome reminder of the greatest period in music...

Free Makes Three...Depeche Mode's "Free Love" moves nine positions this week to #35 and the song's charting marks the first time a Depeche Mode album has produced three Top 50 hits since VIOLATOR owned the charts from 1989 through 1991...Violator produced several top 10 hits including "Personal Jesus," "Enjoy the silence," "Policy of Truth," "World in My Eyes," and "Halo"...EXCITER has thus far offered us "Dream On," which hit #22 and "I Feel Loved," which stalled at #20 last week..."Free Love" will most definitely surpass the chart status of both of its predecessors and could very well renew DM's top 10 status, last seen with "It's No Good"...

We Love the Minogues...Kylie's little sister Danni returns to music charts internationally as her first Top 50 offering bows at #41..."Who Do You Love Now" is a Riva track that features Danni on vocals...The song entered the UK charts last week at #3 and should easily storm the Top 50...Also making debuts this week: IIO's former #1 dance smash "Rapture" enters at #44, followed at #46 by Peter Rauhofer featuring the Pet Shop Boys with "Break 4 Love"...the song marks the PSB first Top 50 appearance since the hit top 20 in 2000 with "I Don't Know What You Want but I Can't Give It Anymore"...Marc Anthony also returns to the Top 50 for the first time since 2000 when her hit the top 20 with "You Sang To Me"...his latest enters the chart at #47 and is a nice little pop tune with a little flavor of his only top 10 hit "I Need to Know"...And finally at #48 is the Top 50 debut for a pop band that seems to be doing fairly well in Europe..."I Wish I Knew How it Would Feel to Be Free" is a great little pop number and a refreshing change of pace from the normal dance/pop feel of the chart...
