COMMENTARY ON THIS WEEK'S TOP 50:

Before I get to my commentary, I wanted to share a news story with everyone...

Pop star Melanie Thornton dies in Swiss crash

ZURICH, Nov 25 (Reuters) - U.S. pop singer Melanie Thornton, on tour
to publicise her solo album "Ready to Fly", died on Saturday night in
a Swiss plane crash near Zurich, police said.

"It is true that Miss Thornton was on the passenger list. She is not
among the survivors," Zurich police spokesman Karl Steiner told
Reuters.

Nine people survived out of the 33 aboard the Crossair jet and police
said 24 were presumed dead.

Melanie's latest single "New Holiday Single Wonderful Dream" is the
song of a new Coca-Cola commercial and was due to be in stores from
Monday, November 26.

Thornton, born in May 1967 in South Carolina, was for many years the
voice of La Bouche with whom she had world-wide sales successes with
songs such as "Sweet Dreams", "Falling In Love" or "Be My Lover".

But their second album flopped and Thornton left the group in
February 2000 for an independent career.

Although born in the United States, her singing career started in
Germany under the auspices of Franc Farian, who has launched many pop
bands. She had arrived with just $15 in her pockets to join her
sister in Germany in 1992.

With her singing partner Lane McCray, she celebrated world-wide
successes with La Bouche and they sold more than 10 million units and
obtained gold and platinum awards in over 15 countries.

Thornton is currently on Craig's Top 50 at #13 for a second week with "Makin' Oooh Oooh (Talking About Love)" from her solo album READY TO FLY.  The album is currently available as an import at such internet locations at cdnow.com.

Aubrey's "Stand Still" does just that at #1 for a fifth week...Aubrey's hit is now tied with Kristine W's "River Divides" for the second longest run at #1 in 2001..Kylie Minogue's "Your Disco Needs You" logged seven weeks, putting her in the lead...Holding strong at #2 and #3 are Cher's "The Music's No Good Without You" and "Don't Need the Sun to Shine (To Make Me Smile)," respectively...Cher's hit is from her upcoming release LIVING PROOF while Gabrielle's single is from her Nov 19 greatest hits release called DREAMS CAN COME TRUE...again next week, these three songs will battle for the top spot...

At #4 is Backstreet Boys second top 10 hit "Drowning" from their greatest hits package...the group's only other top 10 hit was this year's "The Call" which landed at #2 for a single week...Rounding out the top 5 is Gabrielle's "Out of Reach" which jumps up a notch because of a great remix I found on Audiogalaxy...I don't expect the song to return to the top of the chart but it is only 5 weeks away from surpassing Kristine W's 39-week chart run of "lovin' You"...Rick Astley continues to edge closer to the top of the chart with "sleeping (Remix)"...it is his first top 10 hit since "She Wants to Dance With Me"...

Pink's "Get the Party Started" moves up three positions to #7 this week...this is Pink's second top 10 hit, following the #4 smash and top 20--2000 finishing "Most Girls"...Scoring a fourth top 10 hit is Culture Beat at #8..."Insanity" marks the group's return to the chart after more than five years...Culture Beat scored top 10 hits with the #1 "Mr. Vain" and "Got to Get It" and "Anything"...

Britney Spears scores her fifth Top 10 this week as her latest "I'm A Slave 4 U" jumps three places to #9...Britney hit the top of the chart in 1999 with "Baby One More Time" and the #2 position with "(You Drive Me) Crazy"...in 2000-2001 she scored a #6 hit with "Stronger" and earlier this year she hit #4 for two weeks with "Don't Let Me The Last to Know (Remix)"...Spears has had more top 10 hits than any of her teen pop counterparts with N Sync coming closest behind her with three ("Bye Bye Bye," "It's Gonna Be Me," and "Pop")...

Impressively, Madonna scores an eighth top 10 this week from her multi-platinum album MUSIC..."Impressive Instant" moves into the #10 spot in only its fourth chart week...last week, I downloaded two additional remixes of the tune and also a remix of the recent top 10 hit "I Deserve It"...I don't know that the new remix of "...Deserve..." will permit a rechart, but we'll see how it goes as I give it more listens...

Mandy Moore's second top 10 hit stalls at #8 and falls to #11 this week...Love Inc. have had an incredible year on the Top 50 including the #1 smash "Broken Bones" and the top 10 hit "Into the Night"...Now, "Come On (It's Only Love)" is poised to become the group's fourth top 10 hit as it moves up five positions to #12 this week...Natalie Imbruglia is looking for a third top 10 hit with "That Day," which moves up to #14 this week...she hit the top 10 in 1999 with "Torn" and "Smoke"...Enrique Iglesias' "Hero" moves up to #15 this week...the song is growing on me more and more plus the man looks incredible in the vid--too bad Jennifer Love Hewitt is in there or I might actually watch it more closely when I see it...

Blu Cantrell is doing quite well with her chart debut..."Hit 'Em Up Style (Oops!)" takes AIRPLAY HIT as it moves up six positions to #16...this tune can hold its own, but it will certainly face stiff competition for a place in the top 10 over the next couple of weeks...steps' recent #2 hit is at #17...Macy Gray misses the top 10 again as her latest peaks at #14 and slips to #18 this  week...Abigail hangs onto the top 20 at #19 with her recent #1 hit "You Set Me Free"...

Scoring their first top 20 hit since 1998's "It's No Good" hit #1, Depeche Mode's "I Feel Loved" moves up to #20 this week...The Third single from their EXCITER album is actually one of this week's debuts--"Free Love" comes into the chart at #44 and will likely be able to move fast their current US hit...at #21 is this week's COMBO HIT--"Calling" by Geri Halliwell is her first chart success with a ballad and could easily become her third top 10 hit, following the #3 smash "Mi Chico LAtino" and the #9 hit "It's Raining Men"...

Kylie Minogue's "Butterfly" slides down to #22 this week as the first single from FEVER rebounds to #27..."Can't Get You Out of My Head" scored three weeks atop the chart and then quickly fell down the chart, however, with my copy of FEVER in hand, the song should easily spend at least the next couple of weeks working its way up the chart again...

Looking at this week's debuts, you might think this chart was actually a retro 80's chart...at #38, taking DEBUT HIT is a remix update of Christopher Cross' "Ride Like the Wind"...Strangely, I've been in a Chris Cross mood as of late and have been contemplating purchasing his greatest hits album....This track is worthy of checking out--I downloaded it from Audio Galaxy...at #40 is Kim Wilde's return to the Top 50 with the 2001 remix of "Kids in America"...the song is from the cd single of "Loved" from Wilde's new greatest hits package...Wilde scored four previous top 50 hits including the original release of her current single, a cover of the Supreme's "You Keep Me Hangin' On," "You Came," and the #1 dance smash "If I Can't Have You"...Creamy makes its chart debut with a poppy remake of "Neverending Story"...the song debuts at #43...As mentioned above, Depeche Mode's latest comes in at #44...80's Sensation New Order scores a second Top 50 hit from their latest album as "60 Miles An Hour" debuts at #47...New Order last scored two consecutive Top 50 hits in 1993 with releases from its REPUBLIC album...and finally, Alcazar makes its chart debut at #48 with "Crying in the Discoteque"...

until next week...

Hope everyone is well...
