COMMENTARY ON THIS WEEK'S TOP 50:
For a third week,
Strictly Rhythm artist Aubrey manages to stay atop the chart with her #1
dance
smash "Stand Still." The song could easily hold the top spot for
a fourth week...Cher's "The Music's No Good Without You," which moves
up to #3 this week, and Gabrielle's "Don't Need the Sun to Shine (To Make
Me Smile)," which skips to #5, are Aubrey's nearest competitors...Outside
of the top 5, it would seem that the closest threats to the top spot are way
down the chart in the 20's...
Moving up to #21 this week is Pink's first single from her sophomore album MISUNDAZTOOD called "Get The Party Started"...Critics have stated that with this release, Pink can call her career over but I beg to differ...This song is just plain fun and in its original form or in its remixed form, it's sure to be on the chart for months to come...the song takes AIRPLAY HIT for the second consecutive week on the chart...
SALES HIT belongs to
Love Inc.'s "Come On (It's Only Love)" from their INTO THE NIGHT
album...The song has been on my playlist for some time but with the charting and
focus going to "Into the Night," it really didn't get the fuel it
needed to chart until last week...I expect yet another top 10 success from the
dance artist...
COMBO
HIT belongs to the remix of Madonna's "Impressive Instant," which
moves up ten positions to #29 in its second chart week...the song rocketed to #1
on Billboard's dance charts in just four weeks...I expect in just a couple short
weeks, Madonna will score her eighth top 10 hit from MUSIC...
Kristine W is also charting her eighth hit from her latest album...Entering the chart at #47 is her remixed cover of James Taylor's "Shower the People"...Kristine has scored seven top 10 hits from STRONGER already, including the #1 hits "Clubland," "Stand in Love," "Lovin' You," "Let Love Reign," and "River Divides" (from the Japanese release of the album)...W also scored a #2 hit with "Stronger" and a top 10 with "Someone (Watching Over Me)"...Honestly, this song wasn't one of my faves on the album and I could probably say my least fave but this remix does spruce the song up a bit and it may get a full chance in its new incarnation...
Chart Note: The Last album to spawn at least eight Top 10 hits was Debbie Gibson's ANYTHING IS POSSIBLE which holds the record for the most songs charted by one album at ten tunes...here is the list of her top 10 hits with the album...
Anything is Possible (#2), One Hand One Heart (#1), This So-Called Miracle (#1), One Step Ahead (#2), Sure (#1), Mood Swings (#1), Try (#1), Another Brick Falls (#2), Reverse Psychology (#2), and In His Mind (#7)
Geri Hallwell's "Calling" is her first ballad to hit the Top 50 and I'm loving it more and more with each listen...There is a remix of the tune out there, but I have yet to come across it...Geri's most successful tune on the Top 50 was the two-week #3 smash from early 2000 called "Mi Chico Latino"..."Calling" moves up nine positions this week to #38...
Mandy
Moore scores a second top 10 hit from IN MY POCKET with "Crush" as it
moves up two notches to #10...the album's title track peaked at #2 and spent 16
weeks on the survey...Mandy is the fourth of the current crop of teen artists
who have scored at least two top 10 hits...Britney Spears did it first with
"Baby One More Time" and "(You Drive Me) Crazy" in 1999 and
then in 2000, N Sync scored two top 10 hits with "Bye Bye Bye" and
"It's gonna Be Me"...Backstreet Boys are currently at #6 with
"drowning," the group's second top 10 hit (following this year's #2
hit "The Call")...I purposely did not include Christina Aguilera in
the mix because it she has only released one album and the other artists
included have released at least two and most even more...I also believe
Aguilera's singing ability is a cut above the rest of the bunch and she isn't so
much the cookie-cutter pop/r&b of her teen counterparts...
Kylie Minogue's recent
#1 from FEVER slips out of the top 10 this week to make room for the
seventh top 10 from her last album LIGHT YEARS..."Butterfly" finally
makes the top 10 after fifteen weeks on the chart (in two separate chart
runs)...the song moves from #11 to #8 but I expect with my delivery of FEVER
coming in the next week or so, "Butterfly" will hit the back burner as
I focus on Minogue's new music...
The Sugababes have had an incredible year on the Top 50...they scored a #4 hit with "Run for Cover" and then two consecutive #1 hits with "Just Let It Go" and "Soul Sound"...now their fifth Top 50 hit debuts at #45..."New Year" is another song that has been on my playlist for a while but wasn't getting the most attention because of their hit "Soul Sound"...
On Monday, I finalized
the purchase of a car and traded in the ole jeepette...In doing so, I lost my in
car cd player and haven't had a chance to have one installed...until I do so,
I'll be
listening to old cassette
tapes (new order, Erasure, 10000 Maniacs, Will to Power, etc) and of course the
radio...Now I would rather listen to perry como tapes than I would the radio in
Maryland because it's awful...however, a gem that I've overlooked is now on my
playlist...Enya's "Only Time" debuts at #43 and is her third Top 50
hit ("Orinoco Flow (Sail Away)" hit the top 20 and "Carribean
Blue" hit the top 10)...I've always loved her music and often will play her
cd's while I sleep at night...However, I'm very anti-hype and this song was so
hyped that I avoided it...call me stupid...This is a great song and
well-deserving of a position on the chart...
until next week...
Hope everyone is well...
