COMMENTARY ON THIS WEEK'S TOP 50:
Follow the Leader...Back in 1999, Tori Amos has a massive dance hit with "Jackie's Strength," among other remixed gems...Sarah McLachlan had several of her own tracks remixed as well as being featured on "Silence" by Delirium...Sheryl Crow saw her hit "Soak Up the Sun" soar to the top 20 with a remix...now, Jewel follows suit with "Serve the Ego," debuting at #32 this week...although no stranger to the dancefloor ("Foolish Game" was remixed too!), dancing on the Top 50 is new territory for the poet songstress...check out the Gabriel Dresden Mix of the tune--it's fantastic...
Carey-ing herself back to the top...Mariah Carey scores another top 10 hit this week as her latest "Through the Rain" soars from #11 to #7...the song, although available in several mixes, is charting more on its original ballad format than anything else (I haven't found a dance mix that has kept me hooked!)...the song takes Carey back to her early ballad days with no guest rappers and not guest performances--just Mariah doing what she does best--belting out a tune...I've always been fairly hard on Mariah and was certainly unsupportive when she had her little breakdown, but with the tank of her last album, Mariah has finally heard the call of her fans and reverted back to her more simple, less produced material...Carey has always had a love-hate relationship with my chart--songs like "Loverboy" and "One Sweet Day" failing to hit the chart while songs like "My All" and "Love Takes Time" have soared to the #1...more on Mariah's chart successes in the coming weeks as she continues to climb to the top...
Two-stepping...H and Claire are having a great week on the Top 50...not only does the final Steps single "Baby Don't Dance" move up to #12 this week, but their third solo (as a duo, if that makes sense) top 20 rockets twelve positions to #16...at #45, the B-side to the "All Out of Love" single, becomes the their fourth Top 50 hit...it seems that there's not stopping this duo as they prep the release of their debut album away from Steps called ANOTHER YOU, ANOTHER ME (named for a song penned by former ABBA members)...
More UK Pop...as usual, the Top 50 is heavily influenced by what is happening in pop/dance music in Europe (and especially the UK)...The Sugababes debut their latest single "Stronger" at #41 this week (their fourth Top 50 hit from ANGELS WITH DIRTY FACES) while the title track to their second album and the flip side to the "Stronger" single moves to #10 to become their eighth top 10 hit (following Run for Cover, Just Let it Go, Soul Sound, New Year, Freak Like Me, Round Round, One Foot In)...also making a move is this week's AIRPLAY HIT by S Club Juniors called "New Direction" (I can't get this one out of my head!!)...the song moves up a healthy ten places to #37 in its second chart week...not so pop, but more likely to have a hit in the UK than in the US these days is 80's holdover aha with "Did Anyone Approach You," which takes SALES HIT at #30 this week...aha debuted on the chart last week neck and neck with "Rippin' Kitten" by Golden Boy with Miss Kitty..."...Kitten" is now trailing as it moves to #31 this week, albeit still a force on the Top 50...
Dead End Road...Gareth Gates and Will Young were both looking for another hit on the chart with "The Long and Winding Road," but it seems the song has hit the end of the road and slips back to #27 this week after hitting #25 last week...Gates has scored one other chart hit--the #12 "Anyone of Us (Stupid Mistake)" while Young scored a #5 hit with "Evergreen"...
Whenever, Wherever is Now and on the Top 50...Shakira scores her first chart topper this week as the remix of "Objection (Tango)" pushes her into the top spot...Shakira scored two top 20 hits earlier this year with "Whenever, Wherever" and "Underneath Your Clothes" but couldn't get past #11 until her current single skipped its way to the top over the last couple of weeks...while Shakira is able to dethrone Madonna's "Die Another Day" after just two weeks atop the chart, don't look for the ride to be too easy...Madonna could easily snag the top position again next week and the both of them face Leann Rimes, who is breathing down their necks at #3 with "Life Goes On"...next week's challenge for #1 should be interesting...
Michael has submitted a new review and its posted...don't forget to check it out and, if you have any of your own reviews, please email me at CraigTop50@aol.com
