Stand Still: Aubrey |

COMMENTARY ON THIS WEEK'S TOP 50:
Certainly not
idle...Aubrey scores her first ever chart topper on Craig's Top 50 this week as
"Stand Still" soars from #7 to #1 after breaking chart mover and point
gain records last week...It is likely that this tune will hold the top spot next
week but will face stiff competition in two weeks from the likes of Cher and
Gabrielle..."Stand Still" is the 20th song to advance to the #1
position this year, Following:
Girl from the gutter by Kina, Let me love you by Da Buzz, Supreme by Robbie Williams (2), If that were me by Mel C, Let love reign by Kristine w (3), You're my number one by S Club 7, Your disco needs you by Kylie Minogue (7), Out of reach by Gabrielle (4), What it Feels Like for a girl by Madonna (3), Nothingness by Sandy B (2), Just Let it go by The Sugababes, River Divides by Kristine W (2), Broken Bones by Love Inc, You Set me free by Abigail, Over you by Gabrielle, Believe in Love by Da Buzz (2), Shine by Dolly Parton, Soul Sound by The Sugababes (2), and Can't Get you out of my Head by Kylie Minogue (3)...
Dazzling the Dance
Floor...Cher's first single from her upcoming album (due in the US early
2002)...The song didn't strike me at first but I find now that I can't stop
singing it..."The
Music's No Good Without You" is less monotonous than
her international hit "Believe" and should easily do well on the Top
50 throughout 2001 and into 2002...The song takes SALES HIT this week and moves
into the top 10 at #7...Most definitely a contender for the top spot in the
coming weeks...
Not So Out of
Reach...Gabrielle has had an incredible two years on the Top 50, including
finishing 2000 with the Top song of the year "Rise"...She has scored
two #1 hits in 2001--"Over You" and the song at #8 this
week..."Out of Reach" spent three weeks at #1, fell from the top spot,
and then returned to spend a fourth week atop the chart, at the time something
that was most recently done in 1999 when Cher's "Believe" fell and
then retopped the chart..."Out
of Reach" is now within striking
distance of the top spot of 2001...right now Madonna is holding the title with
"What it Feels Like for a Girl," but that tune is down at #45 and
could fall off of the Top 50 next week, leaving Gabrielle wide open for a
takeover...Gabrielle's good chart fortune doesn't end there...this week, the
first single from her Greatest Hits album scores COMBO HIT and leaps twelve
positions to #12..."Don't Need the Sun to Shine (to make me smile)" is
typical Gabrielle fare--midtempo ballad with an incredible dance mix--but
typical is no bad thing here...Look for this one to challenge Aubrey (#1) and
Cher (#7) for the top spot in the coming weeks...Gabrielle, who had a #1 hit
with "Dreams" back in 1993, and who could have been chalked up to a
one-hit-wonder on Craig's Top 50, has proven that she is a force with which to
be reckoned...now if only the US would jump on the bandwagon (doesn't it seem
like we all say this a lot about the US music scene!!)...
Sorry we're Late...The GoGo's, after climbing up the charts for twelve weeks, finally hit the top 10 with the second single from GOD BLESS THE GOGO's..."Apology" scoots up a notch to #10 this week and marks the first top 10 hit for the girls since "The Whole World's Lost it's Head" back in 1994...I'm not sure that this tune will go much higher on the chart as it is surrounded by power house charters that could force it down the chart...
Teen Beat...And they said the teen pop craze was dead...Not on this chart as the Backstreet Boys score their second (yes, only their second) top 10 this week..."Drowning" hops from #12 to #9 and follows the #2 smash "The Call" as the BSB's biggest chart hit...they have had several songs that have peaked at #11...Mandy Moore's "Crush" edges up to #14 this week...Moore scored a #2 hit earlier this year with the great little pop tune "In My Pocket," which will likely make my list of personal faves at year end...Dance Up on The Chart...Britney Spears' rockets ten positions with "I'm a Slave 4 U"...of the teen artists, britney, although in my opinion the weakest of the bunch with regard to talent, has had the most success which proves that marketing, not music, makes the music superstar...her latest isn't the greatest tune, but it certainly is catchy...
Makin' Chart Moves...former La Bouche frontwoman Melanie Thornton is making her Top 50 solo debut a success with the international hit "Makin' Oooh Oooh"...the more I'm listenting to the song, the more I'm loving it...I expect this one will join the ranks of La Bouche Top 10 hits like "Be My Lover," "Sweet Dreams," "Fallin' In Love," "Where do You Go," and "You Won't Forget Me"...
The beat
returns...Heading the debuts this week is the return of mid-90's german dance
sensation Culture Beat with "Insanity"at #37...Culture Beat scored a
massive international
hit with "Mr. Vain" and followed that with other
hits like "Got to Get it" and "Anything"...This refreshing
trance tune should renew the success they saw with the aforementioned singles
from their 1994 SERENITY album...
Am I Blu...Maybe a little late on the blu cantrell bandwagon, "Hit 'Em Up Style (Oops!)" makes its Top 50 debut at #43...The song has always been a fun listen on the radio but since I rarely listen to radio and hadn't downloaded it or purchased the album, the song failed to chart...Now, fueled in part by a Junior Vasquez remix that really keeps the flavor of the original, this tune is able to debut on the Top 50...
The Troops are Back...Army of Lovers, who had hits in the early 90's with "Crucified," "Obsession," and "Candyman Messiah" return with the okay "Hands Up"...There's nothing too special about this tune although it's a good listen...Lovers has failed to repeat the incredible success they had with the #1 "Crucified" and this tune will likely not recapture that chart status...It debuts at #48 this week...
Other Chart
Notes...Abigail continues to move through the top 10 after hitting #1 with
"You
Set Me Free" a
couple of months back...it's back up to #4 this week...Robbie Williams is on the cusp of taking a fourth top 10 hit as
"Eternity" moves up to #11 this week...Williams had a top 10 hit in
1999 with "Angels" and spent two weeks at #1 earlier this year with
"Supreme"..."Let Love Be Your Energy" spent two weeks at #10
a few months back as well...Ultra Nate is having a great chart time right now as
her current single "Ain't Looking for Nothing" spends a
second week at
#2 (her highest charting single since she hit #2 with "If You Could Read My
Mind" with Stars on 54 Amber and Joycelyn Enriquez back in 1999...Nate has
scored two other top 20 hits this year with the #6 "Desire" and the
top 20 "Get it Up (The Feeling)"--all from her STRANGER THAN FICTION
album...she is also currently charting with an update of her first
hit--"Free 2001" is at #28 this week...Rick Astley certainly is
enjoying chart success once again (the first time since 1994's "Cry for
Help")..."Sleeping" moves up another ten positions this week to
#29...it is likely that his new tune will beat the peak of the top 20
"Cry..."...Enrique Iglesias is up to #30 with "Hero"...I
haven't heard the dance mix of this tune yet, but it may need a great remix to
help it once it moves further up the chart...Iglesias has three top 10 hits
under his belt, including the #1 "Bailamos" and the top 5 hits
"Be With You" and "I Have Always Loved You"...Pink's
"Get the Party Started" gets a boost from her MAKING THE VIDEO special
that aired this week on MTV...Something about Pink gets me energetic..."Get
the Party Started" is a good start for her sophomore album MISUNDAZTOOD...Pink
scored a top 20 hit with "There You Go" and Top 50 hits with "You
Make Me Sick" and "Lady Marmalade" (with Christina Aguilera, Lil
Kim, Missy Elliott, and Mya)...her claim to fame on Craig's Top 50 was the #4
smash and 2000 Year-end Top 20 finisher "Most Girls"...French Affair
has a third Top 50 hit with "Sexy" which is more likable that their
second charter "Do What You Like"..."Sexy" is reminiscent of
their #2 smash "My Heart Goes Boom"...It moves up to #41 this week..
until next week...
Hope everyone is well...
