COMMENTARY ON THIS WEEK'S TOP 50:
Taking it on the chin...The chart sees a lot of action this week and as a result, some songs are pushed down...Rockell's "What U Did 2 Me" slips to #3 after a single week at #2...this is the second time this year a song has taken COMBO HIT three times and hasn't made it to the pole position (Britney Spears did it with "Don't Let Me Be The Last to Know (Remix)")...Jennifer Lopez also sees her peak at #5 and slips a notch to #6 with "Ain't It Funny"...Madonna's fifth top 5 from MUSIC spent two weeks at #4 and now sits at #10...Hypnogaja's second top 50 misses the top 10 success of its predecessor..."One More Try" hit #12 last week and falls to #21 this week...New Order's comeback hit "Crystal" peaked at #10 last week and tumbles to #25 this week...S Club 7 have yet to reclaim the success of the #1 "You're My Number One" and fall to #31 after a week at #18 with "Don't Stop Movin'"...Celeda doesn't "Reach Up" any higher than #24 and falls back to #32 this week...Erasure's third top 20 from LOVEBOAT misses the top 10 and slides to #33 after a single week at #13...N Sync's "Gone" stalls at #25 and falls to #34 this week...Madonna's Third #1 from MUSIC "What it Feels Like for a Girl" reverses motion and falls down the chart to #36...the song originally peaked at #1 for three weeks but has spent the past several weeks climbing up the chart again...
Throwing the Punches...Several records on the Top 50 above are highlighted in orange because they make significant moves, but because of an unusually high number of large moves, are unable to claim weekly sales or airplay awards...Way back at #39 is Rick Astley with "Sleeping (Remix)" which moves ten places in its second chart week...Kylie Minogue reaches the original peak of "Butterfly," up ten to spend a second week at #19...Backstreet Boys make an impressive move with their fastest charting Top 50 hit to date--"Drowning" moves up ten to #12...Gabrielle has an impressive week as her recent four-week #1 hit "Out of Reach" makes an impressive rebound from #23 to #14 while her latest single (Set for release overseas this week) makes a dynamite move from #40 to #24..."Don't Need the Sun (To Make Me Smile)" is one of two new songs featured on her Greatest Hits album, due overseas on November 11...
Plays Like a Broken Record...Aubrey has an incredible week with her recent #1 Billboard Dance hit..."Stand Still" is Aubrey's second showing on the Top 50 and this week breaks three chart records...the song steals all three of these records from Kina's "Girl From The Gutter": Biggest chart point gain (without being a debut), biggest chart mover (27 places), and biggest mover into the top 10 (#34-#7)--Kina Originally had a 47 point gain, a 22 place move, and hit the top 10 at #7 from #24...it is more than likely that Aubrey will have the #1 song next week...this song is one that I strongly recommend and will likely be among my faves of the year---dance and non dance...
No Good Without Cher...What would the commentary be without mentioning this week's AIRPLAY/SALES HIT "Music Is No Good Without You" by Cher...the song rockets to #13 in its second chart week and should easily become her next #1 hit...last week I mentioned that this tune didn't have the power of "Believe"--I was right, this one could go further...I don't expect radio in the US to pick it up as they have all but done away with any format to play this tune, but Cher could be seeing yet another record-breaking dance hit..."everyone will be watching..."
Britney Spears debuts her latest "I'm a Slave 4 U" at #41...this is an okay song, but I am not quite sure that it's worthy of all of the praise it's received in the chart clubs lately...one of her better tunes, but seeing her perform live turns my stomach...and the nerve to say she's this generation's madonna...does this mean this generation has no taste...anyway, the song should do well just because it's poppy but don't expect any record-breaking #1 here...
Former La Bouche front woman Melanie Thornton debuts her first solo hit on the Top 50 with "Makin' Oooh Oooh" at #44...Depeche Mode's scores a second top 50 from their latest album as "I Feel Loved" moves in at #46...Chrsitina Milian scores her debut top 50 at #47 with "AM to PM"...Since I'm commuting farther to work, I do have to listen to traffic reports and have caught this number a few times...not bad...Finally, French Affair and Pink make their third and fourth, respectively, top 50 appearances...
until next week...
Hope everyone is well...
