Can't Get You Out of My Head: Kylie Minogue |

COMMENTARY ON THIS WEEK'S TOP 50:
Happy October everyone!! Hope the new chart finds everyone doing well....
The song in my head...Kylie Minogue scores her fifth #1 hit this week with the first single from the October 1 release FEVER..."Can't Get You Out of My Head" has conquered music charts globally and will likely be pegged, at least in Australia and the UK, as Minogue's biggest career hit...elsewhere on the chart, as it jumps to #19 on the Billboard Club Play chart, her recent #19 "Butterfly (Remix)" reenters the Top 50 at #42...I expect that this second charting will result in a higher peak in the Top 50...
What it does to me...Rockell takes AIRPLAY HIT at #3 this week with her second charting of "What U Did 2 Me"...the song originally peaked at #21 but club play here in Baltimore renewed my interest in the tune, allowing it to rechart and pose a threat to Kylie's reign atop the chart next week...Rockell has scored two #1 hits on the chart with "In a Dream" and "The Dance" and two #2 hits with "Can't We Try" (featuring Collage) and "When I'm Gone"...the battle for #1 next week should be quite interesting as Rockell stands strong next to Kylie...
When the MUSIC is gone...November 13 is the official release date of Madonna's GH2, her second official greatest hits package...Madonna is no stranger to compilations...in 1987, her fourth album was YOU CAN DANCE, a remixed compilation of several of her biggest club hits and a new song "Spotlight"...in 1990, Madonna released THE IMMACULATE COLLECTION which featured some of her biggest hits and the new tunes (and Top 50 #1 hits) "Justify My Love" and "Rescue Me"...in 1997 (I believe, I don't feel like looking it up to be sure), Madonna released my favorite compilation SOMETHING TO REMEMBER which featured her ballads, both singles and album tracks...the new greatest hits package track list that I saw on Billboard Online didn't feature any new songs, which is somewhat disappointing, but Madonna is still charting strong with tracks from her MUSIC album...this week, "Gone" and "I Deserve It" move up to #4 and #5, respectively, while the 34-week old former #1 and top song of 2001 thus far "What it Feels Like for a Girl" continues its rebound and hops to #32...Unless Madonna surprises and includes new music on GH2, it is quite possible that we will see the remaining tracks from MUSIC ("Impressive Instant," "Paradise (Not Here)," and "Nobody's Perfect") make a splash on the Top 50...
Ain't just one song...Ultra Nate's "Ain't Looking for Nothing" moves up to #6 this week and is joined on the Top 50 by "Free 2001," a remix I downloaded from the net a few weeks ago...Nate has hit the top 20 two times in the last year--with "Get it Up (The Feeling)" and the #6 smash "Desire"..."...Looking..." remains a strong contender and should hold onto a spot in the top 10 for the next few weeks...
Rounding out the top 10...Jennifer Lopez' "Ain't it Funny" seems to be losing some of the momentum it had a few weeks back as it faces tough top 10 competition...the song does make a move up a notch to #7 but is between a rock (Ultra Nate) and a hardplace (Abigail's return to the top 10 with the recent #1 "You Set Me Free")...it should be interesting to see how, what I believe to be, JLO's best single handles the added pressure in the top...
Chain of hits...Steps is no stranger to Top 50 success and charting multiple hits at once and this week is no different as their latest single "Chain Reaction" takes COMBO HIT and moves to #12 in its second chart week, the album track "Wouldn't Hurt So Bad" from BUZZ moves up to #28, and a downloaded live version of Wham!'s hit "Careless Whisper" follows Kylie Minogue into the Top 50 at #43...I am still amazed that the US never picked up on Steps, especially in the early Britney/Backstreet/N Sync/Christina days...
Not standing still...Aubrey's second Top 50 hit (both using the word "still" in the title) "Stand Still" takes SALES HIT and moves up to #41 this week...the song has topped the Billboard Club Play chart and is probably going to out chart "Still Waiting" which peaked at #37 a couple of months back...
Other chart tidbits...The GoGo's "Apology" lost its punch and slid down the chart after peaking at #21, however this week the song is back on my regular playlist again and moves up to #24 from #33...I expect next week the song will reach at least its previous peak, if not breaking that...Amber's "Yes(Remix)" takes a fall after only two weeks at #2 and tumbles to #10 this week...I wouldn't be surprised if the song moved up the chart again, but it is unlikely that Amber will find the #1 success she saw with other hits, including "This is Your Night," "The Colour of Love," "One More Night," "Sexual (Li Da Di)," and "Above the Clouds"...New Order's "Crystal" has a slow week and only moves to #11 this week, primarily because of my neglect...the song should rebound next week and make a break into the top 10...Jennifer Paige's "These Days" slides to #17 this week after a single week at #11...the song is forced down the chart by tough competition...Lisa Stansfield's latest entry stalls at #24 and slips to #26 this week...I liked this song a lot initially and find myself singing it in my head often, but the mix I have hasn't done much for me...once the DSL is up and running next week, it is possible that the song will be refreshed by a better remix...Enrique Iglesias scores another Top 50 hit with "Hero," which debuts at #49...Iglesias has seen a #1 with "Bailamos" and other top hits including the top 5 hits "Be With You" and "I Have Always Loved You"...
That's it for now...again, hope everyone is well....comments appreciated...
