The final week of September has left us with a fairly interestingly uninteresting chart. While no records make huge point gains or gigantic moves up the chart, we do have six new debuts, three of which come into the top 40 of the Top 50 chart.

VIRGO 2001: I've already made and delivered the VIRGO 2001 cd's to my fellow Virgoian friends...because this cd has been a staple in my listening the past two weeks, some songs that would be falling down the chart were reenergized last week and this week and make a turn, now ascending the chart once again: Abigail's "You Set Me Free" moves to #13; Kristine W's "River Divides" moves to #14; Love Inc.'s "Broken Bones" moves up to #26; Madonna's "What it Feels Like for a Girl" moves up to #35; and Gabrielle's "Out of Reach" moves up to #36. Something I just realized is that each of these songs spent at least one week atop the chart over the summer. The track listing for the VIRGO 2001 cd is as follows:

Payback's a bitch...Rockell's "What U Did 2 Me" scores COMBO HIT for the third consecutive week, tying pop princess Britney Spears' "Don't Let Me Be the Last to Know (Remix)," which took the honor three weeks in a row earlier this year. However, Spears' hit only spent two weeks at #4 and way less than 20 weeks in total on the Top 50...Rockell already has 12 weeks on the Top 50 under her belt as the song originally charted earlier this year and peaked at #21...Rockell also scores her fifth top 10 hit this week with the song as it climbs to #9 from #18 ("In A Dream," "Can't We Try" (with Collage), "When You're Gone," and "The Dance" are her previous top 10 hits)...

Stepping to the beat...UK pop sensation Steps is no stranger to the Top 50, or having concurrent Top 50 hits...this week is no exception as "Wouldn't Hurt So Bad" inches from #35 to #32 and they steal this week's DEBUT HIT honors way up at #23 with an infectious cover of Diana Ross' #1 hit "Chain Reaction"...the song could very well put Steps back on top of the chart...the group scored a #1 hit with their US debut single "One for Sorrow" and a cover of Kylie Minogue's "Better the Devil You Know"...they've had a #2 and a #3 peaking song on the chart since then and a handful of top 20 hits, but haven't seen the crown jewel of the Top 50 since 2000...if you haven't heard this one, it's definitely pop music you CANNOT miss...

Sweet Tooth...The Sugababes' second #1 hit "Soul Sound" holds #1 a second week as Amber's "Yes (Remix)" and Kylie Minogue's "Can't Get You Out of My Head" set sites on the reign of the chart...next week's chart could leave any of these singles atop the chart, with bets on the Sugababes and Minogue battling it out to score the title of NUMBER ONE...

What's in a name...With what has to be a chart first, two songs using the word "ain't" in their titles are currently in the top 10...Ultra Nate's "Ain't Looking for Nothing" makes a healthy four place jump from #11 to #7 this week, leapfrogging Jennifer Lopez and "Ain't It Funny," which moves from #10 to #8...Madonna scores a fourth top 5 hit from MUSIC with "Gone," which moves from #9 to #5 this week...N Sync is also charting with a song titled "Gone," however their tune is struggling at #31..."Shine" by Dolly Parton was #1 two weeks ago and Vanessa Amorosi's "Shine" slips to #27 this week after hitting #26 last week...

Day in, Day out...Jennifer Paige's "These Days" is finally getting attention at radio here in Baltimore and manages a move from #12 to #11 this week...Hoku's "Perfect Day" doesn't chart as well as it tumbles to #19 after two weeks at #13...

Full spice rack...This week marks the debut of the fifth Spice Girl, Posh Spice...Victoria Beckham's "Not Such an Innocent Girl" bows at #38 this week...it is her first Top 50 hit and she follows her four Spice Girl counterparts in making the Top 50 (Geri Halliwell: "Look at Me," "Mi Chico Latino," "Lift Me Up," "Bag it Up," "It's Raining Men," and "Scream If You Wanna Go Faster"...Mel C: "Never Be the Same Again," "I Turn to You," and "If That Were Me"...Mel B: "Tell Me"...Emma Bunton: "What Took You So Long" and "Take My Breath Away" (currently at #46)...)

Swimming in the hits...Backstreet Boys' first release from their greatest hits package is, in my opinion, one of their best singles to date...I've never been a huge fan of the boys (I prefer N Sync), but "Drowning" is a great tune and makes its Top 50 entry at #39...

She keeps trying..."Sweet Baby" by Macy Gray makes a debut at #43 this week...the song is very reminiscent of "I Try," her only top 10 hit on the chart...She's attempted with a few other tunes to recapture the success of her debut single but hasn't seen the gold of it yet...the video for "Sweet Baby" is in heavy rotation on MTV2 so it's very possible she could see the upper chart regions with this tune...

Aubrey's second Top 50 hit "Stand Still" enters the chart at #48 (she charted a few weeks back with "Still Standing") and Elton John's latest Top 50 "I Want Love" wraps up the chart at #50...

"Reach Up" by Celeda takes the AIRPLAY/SALES HIT this week as it moves up to #30...

As my life gets back to normal next week (I've been on vacation all week and trying to get the new house together), I expect the chart will see a more normal flow, with songs making bigger jumps...Once I get my DSL on Oct 12, I expect to be downloading a lot more than I have been the past two weeks (the new place doesn't offer cable modems so it's dial-up city for two weeks..ick!)...
