Love Is a Lonely Place Without You Cher |

COMMENTARY ON THIS WEEK'S TOP 50:
Stepping Back..."Baby Don't Dance" is the single scheduled for release in November from the now-defunct UK pop superstar group Steps..."Baby..." debuts this week at #49...Steps has had a pretty healthy run on the Top 50 including two #1 hits (One for Sorrow and Better the Devil You Know) and a string of top 10 hits (including Deeper Shade of Blue, Love's Got a Hold on My Heart, Stay With Me, It's the Way That You Make Me Feel, and You'll Be Sorry)...anyway, the single is a new track pulled from their final greatest hits album and it's a pop disco nugget...pure fun!!...exactly what Steps is best at doing...
Two to Cher...Cher finally logs multiple weeks at #1 with "Love is a Lonely Place Without You," the third top hit from LIVING PROOF..."The Music's No Good Without You" and "Alive Again" both logged a single week each atop the chart and now "Love is..." is hitting week two...Cher also hit the top 3 with "(This is) A Song for the Lonely" and "A Different Kind of Love Song"...she will face some tough competition next week, though...read on...
The Other Four...the rest of the top 5 is within striking distance of Cher's hold on the top spot...Kylie Minogue's "Come Into My World" holds #2 a second week but is still gaining points and could see an increase as the song is prepped for release...at #3, "Somebody" by Prezioso featuring Marvin is the perfect piece of Italian dance pop music...Gospel house has never sounded better than "Love Don't Let Me Go" by David Guetta featuring Chris Willis at #4...and finally, everyone's fave Pop Idol Will Young becomes the first of the Idol group to score a top 5 hit as "Evergreen" finally makes it to #5...
Not to Be Counted Out, However...the rest of the top 10 is fairly strong as well...Cyndi Lauper's recent #3 hit "Shine" is back up to #7 after falling out of the top 10 a few weeks back...it is the title track to her currently available EP...if you can, get the entire album (a complete tracklisting is available on Ms. Lauper's official website)...into the top 10 at #8 is yet another first-time top 10 artist...Jessica Folker hit #11 earlier this year with "To Be Able To Love" but this week she easily surpasses that achievement and scores with "Goodbye"...Folker is closely followed by Alison Moyet, who, although no stranger to top 10 success, hasn't been on the chart since the early 90's..."Should I Feel That It's Over" is a beautiful ballad that allows Moyet to remind listeners why we love her music so much...it's in at #9...Danni Minogue "Put(s) the Needle on It" at #10 and scores her second top 10 hit...her latest single, due for release in the UK in late October, follows the #3 success of "Who Do You Love Now," a song from earlier in 2002 by Riva that features Minogue on vocals...
Wait Just a Moment...Kelly Clarkson can't be counted out as she moves toward the top 10 with both songs on the double A-sided single "A Moment Like This" /"Before Your Love"..."...Moment..." takes a modest jump from #18 to #13 while "Before..." makes an eighteen-place leap to #12 and steals this week's COMBO HIT award...this comes on the same week that the actual single broke records in Billboard magazine and jumped from #52 to #1 (the biggest jump for a song into the pole position)...Clarkson doesn't stop there, though, on the Top 50...she debuts her live 'American Idol' performance of "Without You" at #46...in just four weeks of her chart debut, Clarkson has snatched up her first three Top 50 hits--something I am sure that has never been done by another artist in the history of my charts...
Eleven to Life...Leann Rimes' latest Top 50 hit "Life Goes On" steals SALES HIT and moves eleven postions to #30 this week...Rimes was last on the Top 50 chart with the #2 second-charting "Can't Fight the Moonlight"...ironically, AIRPLAY HIT belongs to a song that is making its second chart appearance...Pet Shop Boys hit #17 earlier this year with "Home and Dry"...the song, which has been on and off my playlist all year, is a fantastic pop song and could see even further chart success this time around...it moves up to #37 this week...
It's Raining, It's Pouring, All the Rap Fans are Snoring...but I'm not...Mariah Carey returns to the Top 50 with "Through the Rain" this week, the DEBUT HIT coming in at #41...what makes this Carey tune so special...she's doing what she does best...singing...there's no guest rap...there's no hip hop dance mix (at least not yet but I can hear a Hex or T-puss mix of this one now!!)...while I had probably written Carey off after the fiasco she called GLITTER and the intolerable guest rap on every single she released, I may be eating my words and singing hers as she brings us the music that made her a superstar...Welcome Back Mariah!!
