COMMENTARY ON THIS WEEK'S TOP 50:
The irony of it all: So Tampa was fabulous...a bit hot, but fabulous (or should I say FLY! as I was told I wasn't aloud to say fabulous anymore and I picked FLY! as my replacement--or is it PHLY!)...anyway, in Ybor City, the part area in Tampa, there is a club called Castle...it's a gothic club that plays a great mix of some of my fave treats from the late 80's and early 90's...the reason I bring this up is because only two songs' chart moves this week were really affected by my vacation..."These Days" by Jennifer Paige is a huge radio hit in Tampa and it gets a ten-place move as a result...the song probably would have peaked low on the chart had the airplay of the song not increased my interest...the ironic part..."Castles in the Sky" by Ian van Dahl makes a rocketing move into the top 10 this week: I already told you about Castle...the other ironic tidbits--the friends we stayed with in Tampa have a son named Ian...and in the gay club ENERGY in YBoy City, this tune was the only song I heard that is actually on my chart...just thought it was interesting..now onto the rest of the chart...
Da Buzz scores its second #1 hit this week as "Believe in Love" easily steals the top spot from Gabrielle's "Over You"...Da Buzz hit the top spot with their first Top 50 hit "Let Me Love You" earlier this year and also scored a top 3 with "Do You Want Me"...Da Buzz also holds off what will be next week's stiffest competition, Dolly Parton's "Shine," which moves up two positions to #2...
The Sugababes score its second top 10 hit this week with the follow-up to the #1 hit "Just Let it Go," which drops out of the Top 50 this week..."Soul Sound" makes its move from #11 to #8...
Several records in the top 20 take a hit this week and because I didn't really listen much to my own cd's while I was away...after two weeks at #5, Kristine W's "Feel What You Want 2001" plummets to #17...Toni Braxton's "Maybe (Remix)" also peaked at #15 last week and slips to #18 this week...Surreal's first Top 50 hit stalled at #12 last week and drops to #19 this week...Hazell Dean's "Who's Leaving Who 2001," although moving up a notch to #16, seems to have lost its steam as well...these records could rebound next week as my music listening habits are back to the norm...
Kylie Minogue has another great week with her upcoming single "Can't Get You Out of My Head"...last week's COMBO HIT, this week takes AIRPLAY/SALES HIT...the song is just nudged in points by New Order's first Top 50 of the new Millennium "Crystal," which takes COMBO HIT and a ten place move to #37...
Returning to the Top 50 this week is Lisa Stansfield...Stansfield had a string of Top 50 hits in the early 90's with such tunes as "All Around the World," "You Can't Deny It," and "Mighty Love"...she has also surfaced on the club scene over the last decade and produced some modestly successful dance numbers...at #44, her return to the Top 50 is marked by "Let's Just Call it Love"...
Following behind Stansfield are three of the Top 50's potential Best New Artist of the year candidates...Hypnogaja scores a second Top 50 with "One More Try" at #45...the band's first hit "So Sweet" (from the movie VALENTINE) hit #4 a few weeks ago...S Club 7, who found a #1 hit with "You're My Number One" and a top 10 with "Never Had a Dream Come True" enter at #46 with "Don't Stop Movin'"...the song should have entered the chart a while back when it was actually released in the UK as a single, but I didn't really start listening to it until about two weeks ago...finally, at #47 is Nina Gordon's third Top 50 hit, "2003"...while certainly not "Tonight and the Rest of My Life" (a #2 hit at the beginning of 2001), this tune is definitely more likable than the top 20 hit "Now I Can Die"...
ENJOY...
