COMMENTARY ON THIS WEEK'S TOP 50:
A new week and a not-so-new #1..."River Divides" by Kristine W returns to the top spot this week to score a fifth non-consecutive week at the pole position. This is the second time this year a song has returned to the top spot. Several weeks ago, Gabrielle's third #1, "Out of Reach," logged three weeks atop the chart, slipped into the #2 spot for several weeks and then rebounded to spend a fourth week at #1. This is similar to what W's record has done, spending the past two weeks at #2. Prior to Gabrielle's two-time score at #1, the last song to do it was back in 1999--Cher with "Believe." Next week, however, it is probable that one of the other top 10 records will steal the #1 spot--with Da Buzz's "Believe in Love" the top contender right now.
Mandy Moore's "In My Pocket" continues its slow climb through the top 10 this week as it inches up to the #2 position. It is unlikely (read, not completely impossible) that Moore will take over reign of the chart next week. Moore follows in the footsteps of other teen artists flooding the charts over the past several years. Making it to #2, "In My Pocket" becomes only the fifth song by this influx of teen pop to make it to the runner-up position on the chart. 98 Degrees first struck it big when "Because of You" hit #1 in 1998. Next, Britney Spears hit #1 with "Baby...One More Time" and then followed a few months later with the #2 "(You Drive Me) Crazy." Earlier this year, Backstreet Boys had their highest charting Top 50 hit with "The Call," which spent a single week at #2. The difference for Moore's hit is that the chart is incredibly competitive now, especially in the top 10.
Dolly Parton returns to the top 10 this week with a cover of Collective Soul's "Shine." Parton is no stranger to chart success, but since the late 80's has only scored three Top 50 hits. In 1992, "Eagle When She Flies" spent three weeks at #12. In 1993, Parton tore up the chart to #5 with "Full Circle," from SLOW DANCING WITH THE MOON. She also charted in early 1993 with "Romeo" from the same album. Amber also returns to the top 10 this week, charting at #9 with "Yes," her latest remixed by Hex Hector.
Madonna's "Amazing" is poised to become MUSIC's fifth top 10 song as it inches to #11 this week. Way up the chart at #28 and #31, Madonna's MUSIC continues to score a sixth and seventh hit as "I Deserve It" and "Gone" both make eleven-position moves and take COMBO HIT and AIRPLAY/SALE HIT, respectively. The only songs from MUSIC not to chart on Craig's Top 50 are "Impressive Instant," "Nobody's Perfect," and "Paradise (Not For Me)." Each of these three songs have a shot at charting later in 2001.
After peaking at a modest #19 with the seventh Top 50 from LIGHT YEARS ("Spinning Around" #6, "On A Night Like This" #1, "Kids" (with Robbie Williams) #12, "Please Stay" #5, "Light Years" #2, "Your Disco Needs You" #1, "Butterfly (Remix)" #19), Kylie Minogue returns to the chart with a fresh song. "Can't Get You Out of My Head" bows at #41 and is part of Kylie's current Everywhere-But-the-US Worldwide Tour. My assumption is that the song may be one of the new tracks included on LIGHT YEARS when it is released domestically later this year. The song will available on single in the UK in mid-September, followed a week later by Danni Minogue's comeback single. More on Danni later... Minogue will also battle the charts with Posh Spice's first solo single, I believe to be titled "No Innocent Girl," which will be released the same week in September.
Also entering the chart this week is the third Top 50 from Hoku, who had a top 10 hit last year with "Another Dumb Blonde." She debuts at #45 with "Perfect Day" (thanks Sammy!). Jennifer Lopez's current UK single "Ain't it Funny" debuts at #46 while her current US single "I'm Real" featuring some terrible rap will more than likely miss the Top 50 completely ("Let's Get Loud" and "Love Don't Cost a Thing" both missed the Top 50 as well). Tamia makes a second appearance on the chart with the follow-up to the #11 hit "Stranger in My House (Remix)." "Tell Me Who (Remix)" is pretty much the same fare but I don't think it has the same hook its predecessor carried. Love Inc. makes a third appearance on the chart at #48 with "Into the Night." The song is the chart follow-up to the currently charting and recent #1 hit "Broken Bones." Finally, debuting at #49 is Deborah Cox with "Absolutely Not." Not a bad tune in its original form, this one certainly isn't a "Nobody's Supposed To Be Here"(#2) or "It's Over Now" (#2), but has the potential to be her fourth chart hit (Cox hit #1 with Whitney Houston on "Same Script, Different Cast" last year and had very very modest top 20 chart hits with "We Can't Be Friends" and "I Never Knew").
Next week, the chart may be a bit delayed as I am heading to Tampa on Thursday night. I will try to get the new chart published on Thursday afternoon, but if I don't it won't be published until at least the following Tuesday.
Enjoy
