COMMENTARY ON THIS WEEK'S TOP 50:
What a weekend!! I started this weekend off by leaving work at 3pm on Friday to go to the outlet mall and buy a new pair of shoes (which I did and their fabulous!). Then, Friday evening at about 6:30pm, I hopped a subway train to the MCI Center in Washington DC. At about 9:30pm, Madonna took to the stage--beginning with "Drowned World/ Substitute for Love" and finishing about an hour and a half later with an extended mix of "Music." During the in-between, the Material Girl managed to take her fans on a journey through her music, mostly songs from RAY OF LIGHT and MUSIC. She threw in a few others, including "La Isla Bonita," "Secret," "Human Nature," and "Beautiful Stranger." However, it was most definitely "Holiday" that stole the show. One of my favorite songs by Madonna and one her most beloved recordings, even the lamest of people couldn't help but move to the beat of this classic.
It's also official, according to the concert's program, that Madonna will release another greatest hits collection in October 2001. Surprisingly, Madonna did not perform "Runaway Lover" or "Amazing" during the concert (which is why "Amazing" doesn't get as big a boost as I anticipated last week). She did however perform two of this week's three new entries. "I Deserve It" (#39) and "Gone" (#42) are two of my faves from MUSIC and with the amount listening I did to the MUSIC cd and her performance of these two songs live, I felt it was time to chart them on the Top 50.
The rest of the weekend was spent virtually computerless (do you know there is absolutely nothing on television?!) as Scott tried desperately to get MS Office to install on out new 40GB harddrive. Finally, this afternoon (Sunday), he was able to get it done and I have access to all of my precious files again. So how about the rest of the chart...
Abigail, after missing the top spot with "Let the Joy Rise" in 1999 (#6) and "If It Don't Fit" in 2000 (#2), reclaims #1 status with "You Set Me Free," which dislodges "Broken Bones" by Love Inc. after a single week atop the chart ("...Bones" falls to #7). Abigail's hit is also inching closer and closer to #1 on Billboard's Dance/Club Play chart. Can it hold a second week at #1 on Craig's Top 50? With Kristine W holding strong at #2 with "River Divides" and Mandy Moore's "In My Pocket" and Information Society's "Running 2001" sneaking up on the top spot, it's anyone's ballgame.
And then there's the artist who tends to sneak up on the top of the charts. Gabrielle, who scored a #1 hit in 1993 with "Dreams," soared to #1 last year in only six weeks with "Rise" and then managed to hold onto the chart well into 2001, securing a position of 2000's top song of the year. This year alone, she has scored two top 20 hits, a top 10 hit, a four-week#1 hit with "Out of Reach" (currently at #22), and now a top 5 hit with "Over You." The song is most definitely within striking distance of the top spot for next week.
Da Buzz scores its fourth top 10 hit as "Believe in Love" blasts to #8 from #12. The song follows the #1 hit "Let Me Love You," the #3 hit "Do You Want Me," the #10 hit "Paradise," and the top 20 hit "Tell Me Once Again." The group is also charting its sixth Top 50 hit with "Out of Words," which moves to #32 this week. It is more than likely that at year's end, the group will rank one of the top acts of 2001.
Dolly Parton is having an unexpected chart run with her latest "Shine," a cover of the Collective Soul hit. The song moves up seven to #12 in its fifth chart week and scores AIRPLAY HIT this week. The song just misses scoring COMBO HIT for the second consecutive week as Hazell Dean's "Who's Leaving Who 2001" just edges her out as it moves eleven to #25 this week. Smashmouth's "I'm A Believer" scores SALES HIT as it moves to #35 this week.
Several records are ready to end their Top 50 chart run and now that the computer is up and running at better-than-before capacity, I plan to spend today and the next several days aggressively seeking new music. Next week's chart should offer some debuts and some chart shifts as songs that are charting well due to the limited competition begin to feel pressure from those songs that have higher chart potential.
