COMMENTARY ON THIS WEEK'S TOP 50:
I Hope I Can Dance...As usual, dance music is the staple of the Top 50...thirty-nine of the fifty charting songs are dance records or are available in dance remixed format...Abigail is up to #4 with "You Set Me Free," which blasts into the top 20 on Billboard's Club Play chart this week...the song follows some huge dance numbers from Abigail, such as the Billboard #1's "Constant Cravin' '95" and "If It Don't Fit"...Abigail has hit gold on the Top 50 with other dance numbers including "Losing My Religion," "Smells Like Teen Spirit," "Twist in My Sobriety," and "Let the Joy Rise"..."...Free" is Abigail's first chart hit as a co-writer and reports are that her live performances of the song have produced the most enthusiastic responses from audiences of the singer's career, which began in the early 90's...
Yes, Another Top 50...Amber takes the highest debut this week with her latest single, "Yes"...the Hex Hector remixed song debuts at #40 this week and follows on the tails of #1's "This is Your Night," "Colour of Love," "One More Time," "Sexual (Li Da Di)" (also 1999's #1 song of the year), and "Above the Clouds," as well as top 10 smashes "If You Could Read My Mind" (with Ultra Nate and Jocelyn Enriquez), "Object of Your Desire," and "Love One Another" and the top 20 hits "Taste the Tears" and "Do That To Me One More Time"...Amber's success on the Top 50 places her in a category with the likes of Abigail, Kristine W, and Kylie Minogue as one of the most successful dance/pop artists of this chart...
Slowly But Surely...On the other side of the coin, some non-dance records are currently charting on the Top 50...Kristine W holds #1 for a third week with her excellent and gospelesque track "River Divides" from the STRONGER Japanese import...Melissa Etheridge holds #3 a second week with her pop/rock "I Want to Be in Love" from her latest project SKIN...Heather Small slips to #7 after a week at #5 with her pop number "Proud" from the QAF soundtrack...Hypnogaja spent a week at #4 with the dark electronic "So Sweet," originally from the movie VALENTINE but also featured on their second album POST HYPNOTIC STRESS DISORDER...Gabrielle found success with "Out of Reach," which slips to #11 this week...the song has also been remixed and is great in its dance format, however, the original ballad version of the song on the BRIDGET JONES DIARY soundtrack remains the most magnificent version of the song...Gabrielle also scores with "Over You" which moves to #14 this week..this song is also remixed on the UK import RISE REMIXES album...
Sweet tooth for soulful sounds...The Sugababes' success on the Top 50 continues with "Soul Sound," the title track to their US release...the song takes AIRPLAY/SALES HIT this week and rockets to #32...their recent #1 hit "Just Let it Go" makes a move down the chart, landing at #18 this week...
That's all for this week's commentary, but expect some interesting chart action next week as Love Inc, Melissa Etheridge, Abigail, Mandy Moore, and Lee Ann Womack make a play to dethrone Kristine W from the top spot...
