COMMENTARY ON THIS WEEK'S TOP 50:
Making it Good But Not to #1...A1 achieves a strange feat on this week's chart as "Make it Good" advances to become the band's first #1 hit, but does so without gaining points or being #1 on the sales and airplay charts...how can it do this??...well, Pink's "18 Wheeler" moves up to #1 on the airplay chart while Sky Tyler's "Tear it All Apart" takes #1 on the sales chart...A1 secures the #2 position on both charts...on the sales chart, Pink falls below A1 as does Tyler on the airplay chart...this pushes A1 into the top spot without gaining any points or being #1 on either chart...unlike Billboard's Hot 100, sales and airplay positions on my chart carry pretty much the same weight in determining chart position as it would be far too complicated (okay, not really--I'm too lazy) to compile a chart with more emphasis on one half of the points...anyway, all three artists will duke it out for the top spot next week with two other tunes threatening to take over...
Caught in a Love Affair...A1's "Caught in the Middle" makes a healthy top 10 move from #9 to #5 and could move into the pole position next week...an even bigger threat is this week's COMBO HIT at #8...Kylie Minogue's "Love Affair" bested her #23 debut of "Your Disco Needs You" last week by entering the chart at #19 and this week soars into the top 10...Kylie has had at least one tune in the top 10 every single week of 2002 thus far...in fact, you have to go all of the way back to the weekending September 8, 2002 (my birthday weekend!) to find a Kylieless top 10 (that week, "Can't Get You Out of My Head" was at #12 on the chart)..."Love Affair" will more than likely in the next week or so become Minogue's fifth chart-topping hit from FEVER...the last album to produce as many #1 hits was RAY OF LIGHT by Madonna (Frozen, Ray of Light, The Power of Goodbye, Nothing Really Matters, Drowned World/Substitute for Love, and Sky Fits Heaven--Skin hit #9)...
Not Cher-ing the Wealth...While BELIEVE offered Cher her biggest chart hits ever, LIVING PROOF seems to be hitting the Top 50 and battling for the top spot with Kylie and other big tunes..."The Music's No Good Without You" logged a single week at #1 in 2001 while "Can't Get You Out of My Head" initially struck the top spot and Aubrey's eight-week #1 "Stand Still" was reigning the Top 50; "(This is) A Song for the Lonely)" peaked at #3 while "In Your Eyes" spent seven weeks atop the chart..."Alive Again" soared to #1 for a single week but was quickly replaced by Kylie's "Love at First Sight"..."A Different Kind of Love Song" also peaked at #3 during LAFS's reign...now, as "Love Affair" moves into the top 10, Cher's latest from LIVING PROOF "Love is a Lonely Place Without You" moves up to #24 and takes AIRPLAY/SALES HIT this week...we'll see the two artists battling it out again in the top 10 in the coming weeks, no doubt...
It's in Her Eyes...Kim Carnes returns to the chart this week at #38 with one of my all-time favorite tunes, remixed and updated for 2002...the mega-hit "Bette Davis Eyes" is now a trance anthem and marks Carnes' second charting of the song...back in the late 80's (the exact year escapes me), I charted the tune because I was listening to it so much and it hit #1...
Carol-ing at #40...Erin Hamilton, who hit #4 with the fantastic tune "Melt" back in 2000 returns to the chart this week with "I Got the Music in Me"...Hamilton, probably best known as Carol Burnett's daughter, is known in the clubs for her two cover anthems "Dreamweaver" and "The Flame," both of which--along with "Melt"--were featured on her debut album ONE WORLD...I had the pleasure of seeing Hamilton perform at the Millennium Festival in Washington DC in 2000 and she was flawless...as always, she's in great form on her new tune belting out the lyrics to a great beat...
My Pop Idols...and it's their week...while Rik Waller did score a Top 50 with his cover of "I Will Always Love You," both Will Young ("Evergreen"/"Anything is Possible" and "Light My Fire") and Gareth Gates ("Unchained Melody") were both snubbed Top 50 hits with their UK chart-toppers...this week, however, Gareth gets his first Top 50 hit with a cover of "Anyone of Us (Stupid Mistake)" at #42...at the same time, Waller returns with a song that I'm growing to love more and more each day...his cover of "Something Inside So Strong" allows him not only to shine, but to outsing the boys that beat him out of the Pop Idol title...if American Idol can bring us half the talent of Waller (and Gates and Young for that matter), there could be hope for US radio....
Other Debuts...David Guetta and Chris Willis debut on the chart at #47 with "Love Don't Let Me Go," a dandy little house track...Amy Studt's "Just a Little Girl" (and she is at a young 14) marks her chart debut at #49 and a cover of Bryan Adams' #1 80's hit "Heaven" (remember the movie A NIGHT IN HEAVEN with Lesley Ann Warren and Christopher Atkins--we got to see frontal nudity on Atkins!!) debuts at #50, marking DJ Sammy and Yanou's first visit to the chart...
