COMMENTARY ON THIS WEEK'S TOP 50:
River of Hits...Kristine W takes a tighter grip on the Top 50 this week as she not only secures the #1 song for the second week in a row with "River Divides," but also takes two of this week's chart awards for the biggest point gainers. Last week's #46 debut "Feel What You Want 2001," a single in the UK, moves up to #34 and steals COMBO HIT. The Circuit Remix of W's recent #1 hit "Let Love Reign" is this week's SALES HIT as it rockets from #38 to #25--it is also this week's biggest chart mover. It doesn't end there as "Someone (Watching Over Me)" scoots up two positions to #13 and "Lifetime to Love" by CeCe Penniston (co-written by Kristine W) jumps to #22 from #29. After taking the award for ARTIST OF THE YEAR last year, based on chart performance/point totals, it's looking like Kristine W is after the title once again in 2001.
BULLETin...The rest of the top 10 is bulleted for the first time in...well, I don't feel like looking it up right now! Positions two through ten are all point gainers this week. Love Inc. takes its highest charter to #2 ("Broken Bones"), while Mandy Moore scores her first top 10 hit with "In My Pocket," rocketing from #17 to #8. Another "teen pop princess" scores her second top 10 hit this week. Jessica Simpson's "Irresistible" is pushed by a great Hex Hector remix and moves to #9. Information Society returns to the top 10 for the first time since hitting #1 with "Peace and Love Inc." "Running 2001" blasts from #19 to #10. Hypnogaja, Heather Small, and Abigail all make healthy moves within the top 10, at #'s 4, 5, and 6, respectively. Two records make a rebound this week: Melissa Etheridge's "I Want to Be in Love" gets a push from SKIN's release this past Tuesday and moves to a new peak at #3, and Lee Ann Womack's #3 hit "I Hope You Dance" is now labeled "remix" on the chart and gets a strong nudge back into the top 10 to #7 from #13.
Sad songs they say..."Over You" by Gabrielle catapults to #19 this week from #30. The song should easily score Gabrielle a fifth top 10 hit in the next couple of weeks. On the other side of the coin, Atomic Kitten can feel a WHOLE lot better as "Whole Again" makes another great move up the chart from #28 to #17. The songs by Gabrielle and Atomic Kitten just missed earning awards for points gains this week.
Looking for a hit...Vanessa Amorosi, who charted in the top 20 with her first release "Absolutely Everybody" and who has yet to chart with her second single "Shine," steals AIRPLAY HIT this week with her third single from THE POWER called "Have A Look." The guitar-driven pop tune could place her on the Top 50 map as interest in the previous two singles increases.
An amazing coincidence...Madonna debuts at #44 this week with "Amazing," the fifth Top 50 hit from the superb MUSIC album. The song is scheduled for release in various countries in Europe, and although no plans for a new single from the album in the US have been announced, the song will likely continue the top 10 success of its four predecessors. Right behind Madge at #45 is Lucrezia with an okay dance cover of Madonna's #1 smash from TRUE BLUE "Live to Tell." The song is currently rocketing up Billboard's Dance Charts, but although enjoyable, has yet to get me the way Blond Ambition's covers of Madonna's "Live to Tell" and "Crazy For You" got me. We'll see what happens with this one.
Sweet success...The Sugababes score a fourth Top 50 hit (they are currently charting three hits) with "Soul Sound." The song is slated as the next single in the UK. They take this week's DEBUT HIT at #43, just edging M's "Amazing" for the award and position. Fragma's recent #3 hit "You Are Alive" slips off of the chart this week, but is replaced at #47 with "The Ride (Remix)." I've loved everything I've heard from the group so far and expect they will do quite well with the year-end rankings. Ricky Martin returns to the Top 50 with "Loaded (Remix)" from SOUND LOADED. The Almighty Remix of the song is great. I imagine the original didn't leave an impression on me as I can't really remember it from the couple of times I listened to the dreadful album.
Play me some mountain music...Thanks to John Keith who introduced me to a song I didn't even know I owned. Dolly Parton makes a debut on the Top 50 at #49 with a cover of Collective Soul's top 10 smash "Shine." My sister-in-law asked me if the song was the Dixie Chicks. This could be what Parton needs to get her noticed again--country music tends to be overwhelmed with Lee Ann's and Leann's and Faith's and about a hundred people named Tim and Sammy (not the booty sammy, though). A fine track and Dolly's first Top 50 since she hit #1 with "Peace Train."
