COMMENTARY ON THIS WEEK'S TOP 50:
A Feverish Love Affair...Kylie Minogue takes her highest chart debut ever with the fifth track from FEVER to make it to the Top 50..."Love Affair" is this week's DEBUT HIT at #19, besting Kylie's #22 entry in 2001 with "Your Disco Needs You"..."Love Affair" follows four #1 hits from FEVER, including the record-breaking forty-six week chart-running "Can't Get You Out of My Head" (which also spent a record nine non-consecutive weeks atop the chart), the seven-week top hit "In Your Eyes" (#40), the one-week #1 "Tightrope" (which is currently rebounding and is at #15), and the two-week #1 "Love at First Sight" (#10)...Minogue has also charted in the late 80's and early 90's with: "I Should Be So Lucky," "The Loco-motion," "It's No Secret," "Got to Be Certain," "Better the Devil You Know"--among other hits, and made a huge comeback in 2000 on the #4 duet with the Pet Shop Boys "In Denial" and with the album LIGHT YEARS...LY featured "Spinning Around" (#7), "Kids" (with Robbie Williams) (#12), "On a Night Like This" (#1), "Please Stay" (#5), "Light Years" (#2), "Your Disco Needs You" (#1.7w), and "Butterfly" (#8)...an interesting note about Minogue's chart success in 2002: if "Tightrope" (#15) or "Love Affair" (#19) fail to move into the top 10 next week and "Love at First Sight" (#10) falls any more, it will be the first week of the 2002 that Kylie hasn't secured at least one position in the top 10...
This is A Lonely Love Without You...Cher's LIVING PROOF has already spawned four top 3 hits and this week, the fifth Top 50 hit from the album debuts at #34...the songs on this particular Cher album--at least the ones that have made it to the chart thus far--are fairly similar in title: "The Music's No Good Without You" hit #1; "(This is) A Song for the Lonely" hit #3; "A Different Kind of Love Song" hit #3; and now "Love is a Lonely Place Without You" makes its chart debut ("Alive Again" hit #1 as well, but doesn't really go with the whole title thingy!!)...while the singles from LIVING PROOF have failed to chart as well as the singles from BELIEVE, it should be noted that the chart competition in 2002 has been fierce, especially with Kylie Minogue ruling the chart for most of the weeks of the year so far...there are still a string of songs that from Cher's album that will likely make it to Top 50 in the coming months...there's also some news in the Dance Column of Billboard's July 13 issue that I'm waiting for JK to reveal (why must I wait??!) because I'm too lazy to go to the mall and pick up a copy of the mag myself...could it be a remix album? hmmm.....
Bright Future..."Shine" by Cyndi Lauper looks toward a bright chart future as it takes this week's COMBO HIT and moves eleven positions to #23...the song is the title track to Lauper's currently available EP and is also the title track to the album scheduled for release by the end of 2002...I've downloaded the entire album and must say that it is Lauper at her best..."Stranded" by Jennifer Paige--a song that is evidentally a remake of a Plumb song from the DRIVE ME CRAZY soundtrack (thanks Nick!), which I own but purchased for "One for Sorrow" by Steps back in '99--takes the double award of AIRPLAY/SALES HIT this week and moves eleven positions as well, up to #26...
Paying For it Twice...Anastacia certainly has "Paid Her Dues," hitting #1 in 2000 but not being able to follow that up with any more than a #11 hit in 2001 with "Love is Alive" (from "Ally McBeal")...well 2002 changed that for the artist and she scored a three-week #1 hit with "One Day in Your Life" (#12)...now her former #43 hit reenters the chart at #45 as her album FREAK OF NATURE sees the light of day in the US (it debuted and peaked three weeks ago at #27 on the Billboard 200)...Anastacia also peaked at #11 last week with "BOOM (Official Song of FIFA World Cup)" (#29 this week)...H and Claire return to the chart this week with their second Top 50 hit as a duo..."Half a Heart" comes into the chart at #47 and is scheduled for an official single release in the UK in August (it's currently on the airwaves)...the duo hit #5 with "DJ" a couple of months ago...Pet Shop Boys score a second hit from RELEASE as "I Get Along" debuts at #50..."Home and Dry" and its B-side "Sexy Northerner" both made it to the top 20..."Home and Dry" 's top 20 peak marks the first time that the lead-off single from the PSB failed to make the top 10 (PLEASE: "West End Girls" hit #1; DISCO (no new songs--just remixes from PLEASE); ACTUALLY: "It's a Sin" hit #1; INTROSPECTIVE: "Domino Dancing" #1; BEHAVIOUR: "So Hard" #2; DISCOGRAPHY: "DJ Culture" #1; VERY: "Can You Forgive Her" #1; DISCO 2: "Absolutely Fabulous" #1; ALTERNATIVE: "Paninaro '95" #1; BILINGUAL: "Before" (#9); and NIGHTLIFE: "New York City Boy" #4)...
Other Chart Notes...A1 scores another top 10 hit as "Caught in the Middle," their official US single, makes it way from #13 to #9..."Make it Good" is currently at #2 and is ready to take the top over from the second-week #1 "Get Over You" by Sophie Ellis Bextor...Iio's "Rapture (Tastes So Sweet)" takes a new peak this week as it moves up to #4...the song peaked for two weeks at #7 in its original chart run and spent a third week at #7 last week...Pink is in the top 10 two times as well as "18 Wheeler" moves up to #5 and the #5 hit "Just Like a Pill" moves back into the top 10 at #8...
There's a lot of new music out there that I have downloaded but haven't burned to cd or listened to enough to know whether they are chart worthy or not, but expect lots of new faces and new tunes from some of your faves in the coming weeks...
Check out the reviews page below...Michael Holland has some new reviews posted...
Until next week...
