COMMENTARY ON THIS WEEK'S TOP 50:
Eiy-Yi-Yi-Yi...Sophie Ellis Bextor kills the competition this week as "Get Over You" skips over Ronan Keating's "If Tomorrow Never Comes" and snags the #1 spot from Anastacia's "One Day in Your Life"...SEB charted at #4 with "Murder on the Dancefloor" earlier this year and followed that with "Move This Mountain" (the double A-side to "Get Over You" in the UK) which failed to chart much higher than the top 40...this week, she scores her first #1 hit on the Top 50...
A Second Week??...A1 will make a run for #1 next week as their second Top 50 hit "Make it Good" blasts from #9 to #4 this week...the song could very well overpower Bextor's hit and become the first #1 hit by a 'boy band' since 98 Degrees hit #1 in 1998 with "Because of You"...Backstreet Boys just missed the top spot with "The Call"...A1 is also charting at #13 with their first official US release "Caught in the Middle," a song that will likely join MIG in the top 10 in the coming weeks...Westlife, another successful UK 'boy band' enters the top 10 with their third Top 50 hit and now highest charting single "Bop Bop Baby (Remix)" at #10...
A So-Luna-R Eclipse..."For All Time" by Soluna has rocketed to #21 in just its third week on the chart...the song is the artist's first Top 50 hit and has managed to blast right through any chart competition during its run...taking COMBO HIT this week, the song will easily make a play for the top 10 next week, facing stiff competition from Pink, A1, and Celine Dion...
Four for Four...Pink's fourth song from M!SSUNDAZTOOD enters the top 10 this week..."18 Wheeler" makes a move from #14 to #8 this week as the recent #5 hit "Just Like a Pill" makes its move from #17 to #12 in its twenty-second chart week..."Get the Party Started" hit #1 earlier this year and "Don't Let Me Get Me" was a #4 hit a couple of months ago...prior to the songs from this album, Pink hit #4 with "Most Girls" back in 2000 but failed to make the top 10 with any of her other releases...2002 seems to be her year as she has proven herself a force on the Top 50...
A Little Dash of Pepper..."You and Me (Feels So Good)" is Pepper MaShay's third Top 50 hit and this week it takes AIRPLAY/SALES HIT and moves twelve positions to #29..."Dive in the Pool" hit #13 in 2001, followed by the #11 hit "I Got My Pride"...MaShay is making the rounds this summer, playing some of the country's Gay Pride Festivals...
Shining on the Chart...Cyndi Lauper takes DEBUT HIT with the title track to her July 9th-scheduled independent release..."Shine" makes its debut at #34 on the chart and is the first time Lauper has been seen on the chart since she hit #6 with "Higher Plane," a song that it also rumored to be featured on the SHINE album...I downloaded all of the album and I anticipate 2002 to be another good year for Lauper...the album is chock full of potential hits and shows Lauper at some of her best...Cyndi last had album success with SISTERS OF AVALON, which produced three #1 hits--"Fearless," "You Don't Know," and "The Ballad of Cleo and Joe"...she then hit the top 20 with a cover of "Disco Inferno," a Grammy-nominated cover of the disco classic that was featured on the soundtrack to A NIGHT AT THE ROXBURY...
Another Paige in the Book...Jennifer Paige returns to the Top 50 this week at #37 with "Stranded"...this beautiful pop song is her latest single single in Europe and was released by Edel Records...Paige was last in the Top 50 with the #11 hit "These Days" in 2001..prior to that, she scored top 10 hits with "Crush" and "Always You," peaking at #3 with "Sober"...
Die Another Day...No, not the new Madonna song that I thought I was downloading, but rather Corinna May's "I Can't Live Without Music," a nifty pop tune that is firing up dance floors in Europe...it bows at #43...Aurora makes its third appearance on the Top 50 (following the #12 "Ordinary World" and the top 40 "Dreaming") with "The Day it Rained Forever"...the tune enters the chart at #47...after hitting the top 10 with "Sleeping (Remix)" in 2001, 80's pop star Rick Asttley scores another Top 50 hit with "Keep it Turned On" at #50...
Look for tunes from Kylie Minogue, Cher, Pet Shop Boys, Anastacia, Sandra, Kelli Ali, H and Claire, , and more to make their way toward the Top 50...
