COMMENTARY ON THIS WEEK'S TOP 50:
Three Weeks in Your Life...Anastacia returns to the throne this week with the recent two-week #1 hit "One Day in Your Life"...it was Anastacia's second top hit and it returns for a third week at the top spot--fueled by its airplay and my purchase of the US version of FREAK OF NATURE, which evidently sports a different sound than the UK release...while I haven't paid enough attention to the UK album to know, my partner says that the UK version is much more pop-sounding than the US version, which has a rockier edge to it...next week, Anastacia will see some stiff competition from Ronan Keating and Sophie Ellis Bextor, as well as this week's top 10 new entry...
Making it a Hit...A1 not only scores SALES HIT and its first top 10 hit this week with "Make it Good," which moves from #19 to #9, but it also enjoys its second top 20 hit with "Caught in the Middle" moving up to #20...both songs were formerly charting as remixes, however, the original version of each tune is now getting airplay as well so the '(Remix)' notation has been removed from the chart...
HARDLY UNNOTICED...FEVER has been an international hit for Kylie Minogue and it continues to monopolize Craig's Top 50 charts as well...all three of the album's official singles, as well as a B-side/Australian album cut, are currently charting...after two weeks at #1, "Love at First Sight," although on most cd's I'm listening to these days (homemade cds that is), slips to #2..."Tightrope," a one-week #1 hit, rebounds to #26 this week..."In Your Eyes," the A-side to "Tightrope" and a seven-week #1 smash slides a couple of notches to #37...at #47 is the album's first single "Can't Get You Out of My Head"...the song broke a record last week and it went completely unmentioned...at 46 weeks on the Top 50, the song is now two weeks ahead of Gabrielle's "Out of Reach," which had a 44-week run of the chart in 2001-02...CGYOOMH will likely remain on the chart for at least another week as dancing to the Blue Monday mix has renewed my interest, which was waning, in the tune...if Minogue were to stay on the chart for six more weeks (until mid-August), it would reach the one-year mark...the song debuted on the chart the week ending August 18, 2001... the record spent three weeks at #1 in Autumn 2001 and then returned to the top of the chart in January 2002 to spend an additional six weeks at the healm...Minogue's album also has a slew of other tunes that are ready to make a run on the Top 50...
Boy Bop...Westlife scores this week's COMBO HIT as "Bop Bop Baby (Remix)" makes a spectacular leap into the top 20 at #19...this marks the second week in a row that a boy band has taken the COMBO HIT and has done so at #19 ("Make it Good" by A1 was the COMBO HIT last week at #19)...if BBB can make it to #16 next week, which is most likely, the song will become the group's highest charting single, besting the #17 peak of "My Love" in early 2001...also making it to the top 20 is a return engagement by Pink with "Just Like a Pill" at #17...the song originally charted as an album track but has now is now M!SSUNDAZTOOD's third official US radio single...Pink has a great new look in the video--very S&Mish (hey Mikey!) and with black hair with a faint pink streak in the side...I've never seen Pink look better and with each video and single, she impresses me even more...Good for her for breaking free of the whole Destiny's Child sound...Reel also scores its first top 20 hit with "You Take Me Away," moving up from #23 to #16 this week...AIRPLAY HIT belongs to Soluna's first Top 50 hit "For All Time," which moves from #42 to #32 this week...the song is charting fueled by both its original ballad version and a firey dance mix...
A Little Pepper to Spice Up the Chart...That's right...hot on the heels of her performance at Baltimore's Gay Pride Festival, Pepper MaShay--best known for her vocal contribution to Barry Harris' "Queer as Folk" anthem "Dive in the Pool"--returns to the chart with "You and Me (Feels So Good)," her third single release in the US under the moniker Pepper MaShay...the song reached the top 10 of Billboard's club play chart and is MaShay's third Top 50 hit--"Dive in the Pool" hit #13 and "I Got My Pride" hit #11...her latest debuts at #41 and is this week's DEBUT HIT...
Natalie's Beauty...Natalie Imbruglia's "Beauty on the Fire" debuts this week at #44...it is Imbruglia's third Top 50 hit from her latest album (following "That Day" and "Wrong Impression") and her fifth Top 50 hit of her career...Imbruglia's biggest hit was the top 5 hit "Smoke"...Enrique Iglesias debuts the third Top 50 hit from ESCAPE at #46..."Don't Turn Off the Lights" follows the two top 10 hits "Hero" and "Escape"...at #48, Duran Duran returns to the sound that made them superstars in the 80's and to the Top 50 with "Mars Meets Venus"...while certainly not ground-breaking music, it's great to have Duran Duran back in their complete original format--the three Taylors, Le Bon, and Rhodes...Savage Garden frontman makes his second solo appearance on the Top 50 with "Strange Relationship" at #50--it follows the #3 hit "Insatiable"...
Look for tunes from Boyz with Toyz, Rik Waller, Kylie Minogue, Jennifer Lopez, Cher, Pet Shop Boys, Anastacia, Kelly Llorenna, Sandra, Kelli Ali, and more to make their way toward the Top 50...
