COMMENTARY ON THIS WEEK'S TOP 50:
The new song dry spell may be coming to an end as five songs make their debut on the Top 50 this week. Taking the DEBUT HIT this week is the second single from Janet's ALL FOR YOU album, "Someone to Call My Lover" at #43. The song, in my opinion, sports a country twangy sound, much like that of Madonna's second single from MUSIC and #1 hit "Don't Tell Me." This is definitely a fun pop song and should easily cruise the chart throughout the summer months.
'Runner-up' to the top debut at #44 is a 2001 remix of Information Society's "Running." The remix by Victor Calderone is great and should easily push the song up the chart in the coming weeks. I think this remix is superior to that of "What's on Your Mind (Pure Energy) 2001," which moves up from #29 to #22 this week. "Running" is the Society's eleventh Top 50 hit.
Mandy Moore's "In My Pocket" bows at #46, marking Moore's second appearance in the Top 50. As many people have stated, this song sways from the typical US radio formula and is a quite likable little tune. This could very well be the song to put Moore on the Top 50 map with the likes of N Sync, Britney, Christina, and Backstreet Boys.
After months of Chart Club pressure, I finally downloaded "Whole Again" by Atomic Kitten. And while it's a great little tune, it will probably take a bit of time to grow on me. It enters the chart at #48. Gina G returns to the Top 50 this week featured on Lagoona's "Endless Ocean," debuting at #49. The song marks Lagoona's first appearance in the Top 50 and G's eighth appearance. Gina G scored big hits with "Ooh Aah Just A Little Bit," "Gimme Some Love," "Te Amo," "Higher Than Love," "Rhythm of My Life," "I Belong to You," and "Fresh," all from her debut lp called FRESH. G failed to make the Top 50 with "Rebel."
Down the chart a bit, Kristine W proves she is still a force with which to be reckoned as "Someone (Watching Over Me)" steals AIRPLAY HIT this week. My interest in the album STRONGER and a recent order of the Japanese version of the album with two additional tracks could give W the opportunity to chart more songs from the project. "Someone..." leaps ten places to #34 this week.
Moving a fast nine positions to #23 is Kylie Minogue's seventh Top 50 hit from LIGHT YEARS called "Butterfly." The song is charting in its remix form and takes this week's SALES HIT. Minogue also charted with "Spinning Around," "Kids," "On a Night Like This," "Please Stay," "Your Disco Needs You," and the title track to LIGHT YEARS.
Love Inc. finally gets the COMBO HIT award as "Broken Bones" rockets ten spots to #11. The song is poised to become the group's second top 10 hit next week. "You're A Superstar" hit #3 in early 2000. Look for more from Love Inc. throughout 2001.
As expected, Sandy B's "Nothingness" holds #1 a second week and will face some stiff challenge from The Sugababes' "Just Let it Go," which moves from #9 to #3 this week, on next week's chart. Standing between the two hits is Gabrielle's four-week #1 smash "Out of Reach," which is holding its own. It should be interesting to see these three records battle it out for the top spot next week.
Lee Ann Womack's first Top 50 seems to be losing steam at #4 this week. "I Hope You Dance" will likely stall unless I can get my hands on the remix of the song. Records by Melissa Etheridge (#5) and Hypnogaja (#6) are poised to push Womack out of the top 5 next week unless she can improve on her point gains.
Over three years after its initial release, Anggun's "Snow on the Sahara" makes its top 10 debut. The song is charting on a remixed version and moves from #13 to #10 this week. With Roxette and Malina both losing points this week, Anggun should easily move through the top 10 and toward the top 5 next week.
It looks like N Sync is the winner in the battle of the "boy bands" in this week's top 20. In its fifth week on the chart, N Sync's latest "Pop" hops over the nine-week old "More Than That" by the Backstreet Boys, landing the songs at #13 and 14, respectively. N Sync has scored two top 10 hits with "Bye Bye Bye" and "It's Gonna Be Me," while the Backstreet Boys have only scored one top 10 hit with "The Call," a #2 hit from earlier this year. Overall, the BSB have had more success on the Top 50 with a couple of its singles hitting as high as #11 on the chart.
Late in 2000, 80's teen pop princesses Deborah Gibson and Tiffany battled it out on the chart, with Deborah scoring two simultaneous top 10 hits with "You Belong to Me" and "What You Want" while Tiffany scored a three-week #1 with "I'm Not Sleeping." Tiffany scored a top 40 hit earlier this year with the #31 "Piss U Off," while Gibson has maintained some success with the #2 "MYOB" and her current #15 hit "Your Secret."
As I continue my search for new and exciting music, I am not more optimistic that the Top 50 will get more and more interesting over the next few weeks. Until the next chart, enjoy....
