COMMENTARY ON THIS WEEK'S TOP 50:
Number One Again...Cher proves she is "Alive Again" as her latest from LIVING PROOF moves into the top spot this week...the song follows the one-week #1 smash "The Music's No Good Without You" and the #3 hit "(This is) A Song for the Lonely"...Cher is also charting the album's second official US single "A Different Kind of Love Song"--it moves up a notch to #5 this week...next week, however, it is likely that Kylie Minogue will return to the top after an eight-week hiatus from the top spot (yes, only nine of the week's of this year thus far have seen the #1 spot held by an artist other than Minogue) with "Love at First Sight"...LAFS will be Minogue's fourth consecutive #1 hit following "Can't Get You Out of My Head" (9 weeks), "In Your Eyes" (7 weeks), and "Tightrope" (1 week), all of which are still charting at #38, #29, and #19, respectively...
Three's Company...Cher and Kylie Minogue aren't the only female artists currently charting multiple tunes on the Top 50...Pink is currently charting three hits, including the album track "18 Wheeler," which debuts at #40 this week and is her eighth Top 50 hit...also charting are two recent top 5 hits--the two-week #5 "Just Like a Pill" at #39 and the #4 hit "Don't Let Me Get Me" at #37...Pink scored her first #1 hit on the Top 50 the very first week of the year with "Get the Party Started," the first single from her sophomore album M!SSUNDAZTOOD...
Charting Garth...In late 2000, Rockell scored a #1 hit with a cover of Garth Brooks' only Top 50 hit "The Dance"...Brooks never scored higher than #17 with the hit and never scored another Top 50 hit...now, another Brooks cover surpasses his #17 peak--former BoyZone boy Ronan Keating blasts up to #11 with "If Tomorrow Never Comes," a recent UK #1 hit...the song also becomes Keating's highest charting Top 50 hit to date...
With her BOOMing voice...Anastacia's contribution to the FIFA World Cup songlist is "BOOM," which takes this week's COMBO HIT and moves up to #28...Anastacia is on the verge of having her US breakout hit with the recent Top 50 #1 hit "One Day in Your Life," which slips to #4 this week after two weeks at #1 and three weeks at #2...Anastacia scored the #6 song for the year in 2000 with the #1 "I'm Outta Love"..."BOOM" becomes her fourth highest charting hit to date on the Top 50 ("Love is Alive" hit #11)...
Latin Pop...Marc Anthony's pop version of "I've Got You" takes this week's SALES HIT as it moves twelve positions to #21...the song is Anthony's fourth appearance on the chart following the #5 hit "I Need to Know," the top 20 "You Sang to Me," and the top 40 "Tragedy"...AIRPLAY HIT belongs to the song that took the COMBO HIT award for the last two weeks--the recent Billboard Club Play #1 hit "Love's Gonna Save the Day" by Georgie Porgie, which makes another spectacular move up ten places to #13...
The Big Debut...Eight new tunes enter the chart this week, led by Sono's dancefloor sensation "Blame"...the song marks the first appearance by the dance act and comes in at #36...as mentioned above, Pink's latest scores a #40 debut which Reel's "You Take Me Away" bows at #43...Belgium trance artist Ian van Dahl scores a third Top 50 hit ("Castles in the Sky" hit #7 and "Will I?" hit #17) with "Reason," her current UK single--it debuts at #44...UK boy band A1 finally makes a splash (yes, a reference to the hot tub photo of them!! YUM) with their first Top 50 hit to date..."Caught in the Middle" is a great little ballad but it makes its chart appearance fueled solely by the Almighty Remix of the tune...it shows up this week at #46...Milk Inc. scores a debut Top 50 hit with "In My Eyes" at #48 while Liberty X does the same with "Just a Little Bit" at #49...Res scores a second Top 50 hit ("They-Say Vision" hit #11 and is currently at #42) at 50 with "Golden Boys"...
Taking the Dive...The Sugababes tap out the top spot after three weeks and fall to #3 with "Freak Like Me"...it is possible to see some of their older material surface on the Top 50 in the coming weeks as I've really gotten myself back into listening to ONE TOUCH...Sky Tyler's "Tear it All Apart" holds #9 for a fourth week and is strongholding the top 10--Tyler hit #6 with "I'm Not Alone Anymore" earlier this year...Moby's peak at #5 last week with "We Are Made of Stars" could be a result of underexposure...expect the song to rebound next week as I've seen the video a few more times and have been listening to it again...it falls to #17 this week, followed at #18 with Vanessa Carlton's debut hit "A Thousand Miles," which stalled at #7 last week..."Believers" by Baz slips to #20 after a week at #17...New Order's "Here to Stay" seems to have capped its energy level and only manages a short slide to #24 this week...Dannii Minogue, who is due for a new single to be released soon, slips to #27 after reaching #26 on the rechart of the Riva hit "Who Do You Love Now," which hit #3 earlier this year...
