Madonna easily scores a third week at #1 with "What it Feels Like for a Girl" as Gabrielle's three-week #1 "Out of Reach" holds #2 a third week. The two tunes have created a wall in the top 2 that hasn't allowed any records to get into the top 2 for the past six weeks. Madonna's third #1 hit from MUSIC has actually been in the top 2 for nine weeks (the song spent six weeks at #2 before taking over the pole position). Next week, however, it is expected that Sandy B's "Nothingness" will blast into the pole position as it moves from #20 to #6 this week. The song takes the COMBO HIT award for the second consecutive week.

After three weeks at #3, Fragma's "You Are Alive" caves and falls to #17. Steps tumbles to #8 with "You'll Be Sorry" after a single week at #4. This makes way for French Affair's thirteen week-old chart hit "My Heart Goes Boom" to slide up to #3. Right behind it is "Hold Me" by Brenda K. Starr, which scoots from #7 to #4 this week. Roxette rounds off the top 5 with "Centre of the Heart," the duo's first top 5 hit since "Fading Like a Flower (Every Time You Leave)" peaked at #4 back in the early 90's. They have been in the top 10 seven times now: "The Look" #1; "Listen to Your Heart" #1; "Dangerous" #5; "It Must Have Been Love" #2; "Joyride" #7; "..Flower.." #4 and now "Centre.." at #5.

Geri Halliwell's "It's Raining Men" stalls at #9 a second week. It is the former Ginger Spice's second top 10 hit ("Mi Chico Latino" spent two weeks at #3 last year). Gloria Estefan returns to the top 10 for the first time since late 1998 when "Heaven's What I Feel" scored her a #1 hit. "Out of Nowhere" jumps three notces to #10 from #13. Melanie C inches four notches closer to scoring a double-top 10 with the #4 hit "I Turn to You."

Leann Womack is engraving her name on the country-crossover plaque as "I Hope You Dance" sneaks from #21 to #13 this week. The song was a late discovery for me. I understand there is a fierce dance mix of the song available now but I have yet to hear it. I'm sure once I do, this one will rocket toward the top of the chart. Celeste Prince edges another notch to #14 this week with "Inside Your Secret." Melissa Etheridge moves four more positions closer to the top 10 with "I Want to Be in Love," from her forthcoming album SKIN. The last song to hit the top 5 for Etheridge was last year's "Enough of Me."

Mandalay finally makes it to the top 20 with "Beautiful." With Madonna-esque vocals, this song has taken ten weeks to rise to #18 on the survey. LA-based Hypnogaja rockets eleven positions this week and takes AIRPLAY/SALES HIT with its first top 50 charter. "So Sweet" was featured in last year's horror-flick VALENTINE and is available on the band's second album titled POST-HYPNOTIC STRESS DISORDER. Hypnogaja is performing in LA on June 15 (after Kina) and again at San Fran's pride festival on June 23. Click the link on their name and read all about the band. Anggun makes another big move this week with the remix to her modest hit "Snow on the Sahara." The song makes a healthy move from #37 to #26 this week. Sarina Paris' "Look at Us Now" (see the scathing review Michael Holland sent to me in the June reviews page) makes a small move from #29 to #28. Deborah Gibson's third Top 50 from MYOB called "Your Secret" moves up seven to #29 this week. Backstreet Boys, after seemingly losing steam the past two weeks, regain some momentum with "More Than That" and move up to #30.

The Sugababes score a third Top 50 from LUSH LIFE with "Just Let it Go," which bows at a very healthy #34 this week. "Overload" peaked at #28 last year and their second Top 50 "Run for Cover" is at #11 after peaking at #4 for two weeks. This is another group I expect big things from in 2001's weekly charts. Information Society's remixed and reissued club smash "What's on Your Mind (Pure Energy)" makes its debut at #41 this week. Love Inc. return to the Top 50 with their second entry. "Broken Bones" lands at #44 this week. Love's first Top 50 was the top 5 smash from 1999-2000 "You're A Superstar." Kylie Minogue continues her LIGHT YEARS Top 50 success with "Butterfly (Remix)" at #49. Minogue has had her most success with the YEARS album: "Spinning Around" #6; "Kids" (with Robbie Williams) #12; "On A Night Like This" #1; "Please Stay" #5; "Light Years" #2 and "Your Disco Needs You," which sits at #20 after spending seven weeks at #1 earlier this year.

Dodging bullets and falling down the chart this week are: Steps #4-#8; Fragma #3-#17; Jennifer Lopez #8-#23 and the GoGo's #14-#24.

2001 seems to be full of titles that begin or contain the same words. Currently on the chart, "What's On Your Mind (Pure Energy)" #41, "What U Did to Me" #42, and "What Took You So Long" #43. "Out of Reach" #2 and "Out of Nowhere" #10. "I Turn to You" #12, "I Hope You Dance" #13, "I Want to Be in Love" #15, and "I Wanna Be Bad" #38. "You'll Be Sorry" #8, "You Are Alive" #17, and "Love is Alive" #16. "Let Love Be Your Energy" #45 and "Let Love Reign" #48. "Looking for Love" #27 and "Look at Us Now" #28.

The chart is also covered by songs performed by one-named artists--fourteen in total, including Madonna, Gabrielle, Roxette, Malina, Steps, Anastacia, Fragma, Bananarama, Anggun, Dream, and Rockell. And let's not forget Kristine W, Melanie C, and Sandy B.
