Freak LIke Me The Sugababes |

COMMENTARY ON THIS WEEK'S TOP 50:
It's all about the freak...The Sugababes score a third chart-topping hit this week as "Freak Like Me" moves into the #1 position, dislodging Anastacia's "One Day in Your Life" after two weeks..."Freak..." follows other Sugababes Top 50 hits "Overload" (#28), "Run for Cover" (#4), "Just Let it Go" and "Soul Sound" (#1), and "New Year" (#6)...all of the trio's previous hits were from the album ONE TOUCH and featured original member Siobahn...she has since been replaced by original Atomic Kitten member Heidi...the firls will likely have at least two weeks atop the chart as none of the songs in the top 10 are currently within range of the #1 spot...
A charting hazard...Pink's "Don't Let Me Get Me" (#4-#6) and "Just Like a Pill" (#19-#22, peak #5) are victims of Pink's overexposure...I'm certain that had my attention not been split between the two songs, they would have easily followed up the #1 success of "Get the Party Started" and even surpassed Pink's only #1 hit...this is not to say the songs didn't chart well...they both rank as two of only four top 10 hits for the artist, the fourth being "Most Girls," which hit #4 in 2000...Pink charted Top 50 with "There You Go" (#13), "Lady Marmalade" (#33), and "You Make Me Sick" (#17)...expect more from M!ZZUNDAZTOOD throughout 2002...
Touch the sky...Debuting at the very end of 2001 on Craig's Top 50, Sky Tyler easily scored a top 10 hit with the #6 tune "I'm Not Alone Anymore" from her debut album NOW U KMOW...now Tyler scores a second top 10 hit with her second Top 50 called "Tear it All Apart"...anyway, the song is at #9 this week, up from #11 and you can catch Sky performing in LA on June 15 and at San Fran's Pride on June 30...check out her website to get more information www.symiotic-entertainment.com/skytyler.html
No NYC boys...Pet Shop Boys hit #8 with "New York City Boy" before dropping from the top 10, but then eventually rebounded and took the song to #4 (and finished top 20 for 2000)...the duo's most recent single, "Home and Dry," peaked at #20 and then fell all the way to #49 before rebounded to #17...this week, the song seems to lose steam again and slips to #18...the single's B-side "Sexy Northerner" stalled at #16 last week and tumbles to #18 this week...
Bottoming out...The lower half of the Top 50 sees a lot of songs dropping from peaks last week, holding steady in last week's position, or moving up the chart slowly without any significant point gains...TJ Davis' version of the song "Wonderful Life" drops to #28 after a week at #25...Rik Waller's rendition of "I Will Always Love You" holds steady at #34 for a second week...Paulina Rubio's US debut "Don't Say Goodbye" drops a notch to #38 after a week at #37 (I like this song but can't find a decent version of it on audio galaxy--they all have some vocoder over the beginning and middle)...Mareeko's "More" moves up two positions to #40 although not gaining any points over last week...Aurora's second Top 50 (they hit #12 with "Ordinary World" last year) called "Dreaming" drops to #45 after a week at #40...Mull Historical Society's "Watching Xanadu" falls to #47 after a week at #46...and Amber's "We Need to Be Naked" plunges from #24 to #49 after hitting #23 two weeks ago (this is Amber's first charting single not to hit the top 20)...on the flip side, Mary J. Blige's "No More Drama" moves up a notch to #21 this week after a wonderful performance at TOTP...I expect DIVAS LAS VEGAS will push Mary J up even further and with my renewed interest in the original version of the the song, expect Mary J to go on to have one of the biggest chart hits of the year...
Keep my body moving...And that's just what H and Claire do with "DJ," their first post-Steps effort as a duo...the song makes a move this week up two more positions to #5...Erasure scores its highest charting single from LOVEBOAT as "Catch 22" moves up three to #7...the duo has charted "Freedom" and "Moon and the Sky" at #9 and "Here in My Heart" in the top 20 from their latest album, a far cry was the singles success they saw with COWBOY between 1997 and 2000...
Top 10 Stars...Moby scores his first top 10 hit as "We Are All Made of Stars" makes a top 10 debut at #8...although a fan of Moby's since his 1992 debut, he hasn't seen much--or any actually--chart success with me...why? I don't know...he has certainly released material more than worthy of hit status...
HIT...HIT...HIT...HIT...Kylie Minogue takes a dive this week as "In Your Eyes" falls from the top 10 to #20 but her fourth song (third UK single, second US single) from FEVER makes an eleven place move and takes COMBO HIT for the second consecutive week..."Love at First Sight" follows three #1 hits--"Can't Get You Out of My Head" (#30), the aforementioned "In Your Eyes" (#20), and "Tightrope" (#10)...the song is at #16 this week...Jessica Garlick's "Come Back"--a song that can best be described as a Debbie Gibson ballad-gone country--takes this week's AIRPLAY HIT and moves up to #31 from a #39 debut last week...Iio's second charting of "Rapture (Tastes So Sweet)" takes a nine-place jump to #35 and SALES HIT...DEBUT HIT belongs to UK top 10 hit "At Night" by Shakedown...with a funky retro groove, this song dances in at #42 and is the first Top 50 for the group...
One Step from Insomnia...Faithless keeps us up--on our feet and dancing--with his first Top 50 since his hit "Insomnia"...featuring Dido on vocals, "One Step Too Far" debuts at #44...Geri Halliwell scores her sixth solo Top 50 with "Destiny (Remix)," which makes its debut at #48...Halliwell scored top 3 hits with "Mi Chico Latino" (2000) and "Calling" (2001-02) and a top 10 hit with "It's Raining Men" (2001) and has also hit the chart with "Look at Me," "Bag it Up," and "Scream If You Wanna Go Faster"...Halliwell is surely receiving the most exposure and success of any of the ex-Spices (Mel C runs a close second with three top 5 hits, including the #1 "If That Were Me" (2000-01) and the two-time top 10/#4 hit "I Turn to You" (2000 and 2001)...Georgie Porgie's #1 Club Play hit "Love's Gonna Save the Day" finally makes its Top 50 debut at #50...the song has been 'bubbling under' for several weeks but is finally receiving enough airplay to make the chart...I expect that the song will continue to increase in airplay in the coming weeks as I'm growing to enjoy it more and more...
Will she do it again?...Britney Spears moves up to #17 this week with "Overprotected"...the song, fueled a Freestyle remix, is Spears' tenth Top 50 hit--"Baby...One More Time" (#1), "(You Drive Me) Crazy," "Don't Let Me Be the Last to Know," "Stronger," and "I"m a Slave 4 U" (top 10), "I'm Not a Girl, Not Yet a Woman," "Sometimes," and "From the Bottom of My Broken Heart" (top 20), and "Ooops...I Did it Again" (top 50) ["Lucky," the second single from the album OOPS... didn't chart on the Top 50..."Overprotected" has a fairly decent shot at making it as high as Britney's other top 10 singles and could even renew Britney's #1 debut status...
Until next week...
