COMMENTARY ON THIS WEEK'S TOP 50:

For songs I hear--or have heard--on XM satellite radio, I've added 'XM RADIO VERSION' to their mix lists...I understand that the versions listed as XM may be the same as other versions of the song I may have listed...

May doesn't really have any special colors (except for Memorial Day and the whole tribute to the flag thing is just not me at all!!)...

A Hole in the Record...Back in 2000, Anastacia's "I'm Outta Love" jumped from #13 to #1 in its 20th week on the Top 50 (two records:  biggest jump into the top spot and longest time on chart to reach #1)...this week, one of those records is shattered as The Sugababes oust, ironically, Anastacia from the pole position with "Hole in the Head" which peaks the chart in its 26th week (although in two different chart runs--Anastacia's feat was in one run)...The Babes tune, originally peaking at #2 for two weeks, becomes the trio's sixth #1 hit following Just Let it Go, Soul Sound, Freak Like Me, Stronger, and Too Lost in You..."Left Outside Alone" by Anastacia slips to #3 after five weeks on top...Anastacia probably won't have to wait long before returning to the top spot, though, as the second single from ANASTACIA rockets up the chart this week from #23 to #10..."Sick and Tired" also takes COMBO HIT for the second consecutive week and could be at the top as early as next week...the top 10 is sort of weak right now with the only true pole position challengers being the rebounding Ryan Durante with "You Got Me Goin'" (up four to #2) and Stonebridge's "Put 'Em High" with Therese (up three to #6)...

Idol Chatter...It's a week for the American Idols on the Top 50 as Kelly Clarkson's "Beautiful Disaster" continues its climb up the chart, landing at #23 this week...it is the second non-single album track to hit the chart from her debut album THANKFUL...the first, "Just Missed the Train," spent five weeks atop the chart in 2003...Pop Idol star Will Young is holding to the top 10 with his recent #2 smash "Your Game," which sits at #5 this week, while the title track to FRIDAY'S CHILD, his fourth single from his sophomore album, continues to ride the chart, moving nine this week to #34...Kimberley Locke's "8th World Wonder" skips a notch to #40...the recent #2 hit scored a rebound last week when I purchased her debut ONE LOVE...Tamyra Gray from season one of AI scores her first Top 50 hit with "Raindrops Will Fall"...currently I'm charting the live version from the AI3 show on which she performed but as the song is released, expect radio and/or album versions to chart...initially, I didn't care for the tune much, but it has grown on me and could become quite the chart hit for Gray...back at #50, Christina Christian's live performance of her upcoming European single "Forever and Never" scores her a first Top 50 hit as well...RJ Helton's "Lately" slips up two places to #47 this week...in all, four contestants from AI season one have charted (Clarkson, Gray, Helton, Christian), four from AI season two have charted (Aiken, Studdard, Trenyce, Locke), and so far only LaToya London from season three has charted (although I expect Diana and Fantasia will surface soon enough)...

Where's my nitroglycerin pill...The "Heart Attack" continues this week as Jahkey B's dance floor anthem featuring Satta continues to assault the chart, moving up eleven this week to #21 and taking AIRPLAY HIT...it's been a great year for dance singles so far with the likes of Calanit, Evan, Ryan Durante, Anastacia, Kylie, and now this one...SALES HIT goes to Mindy Smith's "One Moment More" which also takes an eleven place move to #25 this week...it is Smith's third Top 50 hit (Jolene and Come to Jesus both hit #1 earlier this year with the latter currently rebounding and up to #8 on the chart)...

Tori, is that you?...sounding much like Tori Amos, Casey Stratton finally debuts on the Top 50, taking DEBUT HIT honors with "Blood" debuting at #38...this boy has been everywhere lately--mags, tv, and now remixed...even without the remix, the song would have eventually charted but there's nothing like a healthy dance floor push...if you haven't heard his music, check him out...also making a splash into the Top 50 this week is Sophie Ellis Bextor as a featured vocalist on Magnolia's "It's All Vain"...this one has the chance to become Ellis Bextor's biggest chart hit since "Is it Any Wonder"...her latest album SHOOT FROM THE HIP hasn't exactly produced any breakout singles (one top 10 that was fairly forgettable)...the tune comes in at #45 this week...Madonna gets an Aubrey makover with an over-produced updated version of "Angel," the A-side to the "Into the Groove" single from 1985...while I've been a fan of Aubrey since her debut release "Stand Still" (which spent 8 weeks atop my chart), I have to say that her singles since then ("Willing and Able" and "I'm Waiting") have been quite disappointing..."Angel" is no different, really, and of all Madonna songs to cover, this is probably one of Madge's most forgettable singles of her career...

Their Own Way to California...in four weeks, it would seem hopeless for a song that has only climbed as high as #39, but Wilson Phillips has its best week yet with a cover of Fleetwood Mac's "Go Your Own Way"...the song has been struggling for airplay and finally gets a bit of a boost this week and jumps six places...I don't expect any record-breaking success with this tune, however, I also didn't expect to buy their debut album and chart six top 10 hits from it...

Will she Fly Again...Kristine W has been struggling to get past the top 20 on the chart..."Some Lovin'," "I'll Be the Light," and now "The Wonder of it All" seem to have all fizzled on the chart just above the #20 spot...that's a far cry from the record-setting chart success she saw with the tracks and singles from her last album STRONGER...now, let's not be too quick to say that FLY AGAIN is a failure as it has produced the #1 smashes "Letting Go," "Fly Again," and "Save My Soul" and has a lot more to offer as well...
