COMMENTARY ON THIS WEEK'S TOP 50:
The top 4 records remain stagnate on this week's chart, each remaining strong and a contender to the top spot on next week's chart. Gabrielle, though, has thrown a wrench into the solid top 4 records as her latest hit "Out of Reach" takes COMBO HIT and soars from #19 to #6 in its fourth chart week. Ironically, Gabrielle's last #1 hit and the #1 song of 2000 "Rise" was in position 6 in its fourth week as well. It went on to take over the pole position in its sixth week on the Top 50. The song also spent an amazing thirty-two weeks on the Top 50. It is quite possible that another surge in point gains like this week could not only have Gabrielle blasting through Britney Spears, Malina, and Madonna, but also dislodging the seven-week reigning chart champ "Your Disco Needs You" by Kylie Minogue.
Incidentally, Minogue's latest has now tied the seven-week #1 runs of 1991's "Justify My Love" and 2000's "Lovin' You." IF the song can hold onto the top spot for one more week, it will take the longest run of any #1 song. It should be interesting next week to watch as two UK sensations--Minogue and Gabrielle--who have had very limited success in the US battle it out for the top spot, as that is the likely scenario.
UK dance sensation Fragma scores a second top 10 hit with "You Are Alive," which rockets from #20 to #10 this week. The song is certainly the group's fastest charting single and has now tied the peak of their second Top 50 hit "Everytime You Need Me."
Madonna also makes yet another top 10 appearance as "Time Stood Still (Remix)" from the movie THE NEXT BEST THING makes a move to #8 after two weeks at #12. The song is the Material Mom's sixty-second (yes, 62) top 10 hit (her 61st is stationary for a second week at #2 and is her 'official' current release).
Another big mover is the excellent "You'll Be Sorry" by Steps, which blasts to #15 in its third chart week. This one is my favorite Steps tune since their debut "One for Sorrow," which was their first of two #1 hits.
With all of the charters heading up in a big way, room must be made by those that fall. Several records take it on the chin this week as the aforementioned charters blast through the top 20. Here's a breakdown of the songs that hit brick walls this week:
"All for You" by Janet Jackson--in only its seventh chart week, the song that has spent the past several weeks at #1 on Billboard's HOT 100, as well as Alaska Jim's Top 100, stalls at #9 and takes a tumble to #17.
"Careless Whisper" by Bananarama--it certainly "didn't dance again" to #1 as it did for Wham! back in the mid-80's. The trio had a strong momentum going but this week dive bomb from their #5 peak to #19.
"Stranger in My House (Remix)" by Tamia--coincidentally, the last artist to remake "Careless Whisper"--at least that I am aware of [Sarah Washington covered the tune first]--was Tamia, who never charted with the tune (the cover wasn't too bad). This week, after two weeks at #11, her remixed ballad plummets to #22. This was Tamia's first Top 50 hit.
"Love Will Never Do (Without You)" by Macy Gray--it's not the week for covers as this Macy Gray tune from MTV's ICON stalls at #24 and slips to #26.
"Get it Up" by Ultra Nate--what's in a title...not the chart success of this Nate hit. After hitting #6 with "Desire" back in 2000, this disappointing follow-up stalled at #17 last week and takes a free fall to #36 this week.
"Broken Promises" by Tonya Mitchell--after peaking at #39 two weeks ago and then slipping back to #40 last week with a bullet, this first Top 50 from the opening act on N Sync's current tour slides to #50 and prepares to disappear from the chart.
How about the week's debuts??? Well an all-star cast is the highlight of a 2001 update of Patti LaBelle's classic 1974 #1 hit "Lady Marmalade," which bows at #44 this week. The updated version features Mya and Lil Kim with their first Top 50 hits, Pink with her fourth Top 50 hit, and Christina Aguilera on her sixth Top 50--and one of her strongest performances to date. At #45, Roxette scores an eleventh Top 50 hit with "The Centre of the Heart," an infectious pop tune (as John K. put it). This is the duo's third Top 50 hit in less than a year (they charted two times with "I Wish I Could Fly" and once with "Stars," both of which hit the top 20). At #47 is the first single from Melissa Etheridge's latest project, due in stores in May. "Please Forgive Me" is a ballad that deals with the issue of meeting someone and beginning a relationship after being "out of the loop" for some time. It's a great tune...check it out! And finally, the third Solo Spice to hit the chart lands at #49. Emma "Baby Spice" Bunton enters the chart this week with her #1 UK hit "What Took You So Long." She follows Geri "Ginger Spice" Halliwell--who has scored five Top 50 hits, including the #3 smash "Mi Chico Latino" and this week's SALES HIT "It's Raining Men"--and Melanie C who has scored three top 5 hits, including the #1 "If That Were Me," the #5 "Never Be the Same Again," and the #4 hit "I Turn to You," which incidentally may be reentering the Top 50 in the next few weeks as radio has picked up the song (FINALLY!) and my interest is renewed.
