COMMENTARY ON THIS WEEK'S TOP 50:
A sixth week and Kylie's competition begins to close in on Craig's Top 50 pole position. "Your Disco Needs You" holds #1 but Madonna's "What it Feels Like for a Girl" is now at #2, Malina's "By Your Side" has snuck to #3, and Britney Spears' "Don't Let Me Be the Last to Know (Remix)" is up to #4.
In two weeks, Gabrielle's "Out of Reach" and Fragma's "You Are Alive" will likely be within striking distance of the top of the chart as they continue to trample a path up the Top 50. Gabrielle moves up eleven to #19 this week while Fragma steals the AIRPLAY/SALES HIT awards and rockets twelve to #20.
Steps makes a thirteen place move this week with their third single from the album BUZZ. "You'll Be Sorry" takes this week's COMBO HIT award as it moves to #25 in its second chart week. "...Sorry" is the follow-up to the #6 hit "It's the Way You Make Me Feel" (#45 this week) and the top 30 "Stomp."
Making the DEBUT HIT this week is the return to the Top 50 of ex-Spice Girl Geri Halliwell. Halliwell has had some Top 50 success with the top 20 "Look at Me," the top 3 "Mi Chico Latino," the top 20 "Lift Me Up," and the top 40 "Bag it Up." She returns this week at #44 with her cover of The Weathergirls' classic disco smash "It's Raining Men." The song was last covered by former Weathergirl Martha Wash and drag sensation RuPaul.
Rockell also returns with the follow-up to the #1 "The Dance." "What U Did to Me" doesn't stray from the standard freestyle sound and makes its debut at #47. At #49, yet another underage act makes a debut on the Top 50. 3LW's "No More (Baby I'ma Do Right)" is the first single from these three teens. It's not the greatest song in the world, but for some reason, after seeing these girls on The Rosie O'Donnell Show, I really think they have spunk. Definitely not the teen hit of the year, but I haven't grown tired of it yet.
Other big movers this week:
The Sugababes blast up six to #14 in a very crowed top 20 with "Run for Cover," their second Top 50 and highest charting hit. French Affair's "My Heart Goes Boom" scoots up to #18 from #25 this week. Samantha Mumba's second Top 50 "Baby Come on Over..." leaps eleven places to #22. Black Eyed Peas featuring Macy Gray is up ten to #30 with "Request Line." Depeche Mode's "Dream On" makes an impressive nine-place move to #33.
All of last week's debuts make decent moves this week. "Hold Me" by Brenda K. Starr blasts up ten to #35. Karen Ramirez is up eleven to #36 with her #1 Billboard Dance hit "Looking for Love." UK hitmaker Tima Reece moves to #37 with "Crazy About You." Also moving eleven is Jennifer Lopez with "Play," the second release from her J-LO album. Tiffany's second Top 50 from THE COLOR OF SILENCE, "Piss U Off," moves up to #41 this week. Anastacia's second Top 50 hit "Love is Alive" moves up to #43 this week.
Kristine W's "Lovin' You" will likely drop off of the Top 50 after this week's chart. The song holds the record for the Top 50 longevity. The song has been on the survey since July 22, 2000--an unprecedented 39 weeks--and spent an amazing 25 non-consecutive weeks in the top 10 alone. Below you can see the chart life of "Lovin' You."

Also, last week, it was brought to my attention that my chart is not only predominantly woman, but you would be hard-pressed to find a male vocalist on any chart hit with the exception of the two Steps hits, the two S Club 7 hits, Erasure's current charter, Depeche Mode's return hit, and the Black Eyed Peas's current Top 50 debut. However, Erasure's "Crying in the Dark" and Depeche Mode's "Dream On" are the only songs on the chart sung solely by males.
