COMMENTARY ON THIS WEEK'S TOP 50:
After a sluggish last week, this week's chart--without a lot of big movers--offers some really interesting chart action...here it goes...
Sweet as Sugar...After claiming Top 50 success with "Overload" (#28), "Run for Cover" (#4), "Just Let it Go" (#1), "Soul Sound" (#1), and "New Year" (#6), the Sugababes return with a brank new, funky pop record..."Freak Like Me" is almost Destiny's Child's "Bootylicious" meets Brandy's "What About Us" and I am in love with it...if you're in for something a little off the beaten path, check out the Different Gear Mix of the song, which is currently my favorite..."Freak..." debuts at #31 this week and is the chart's top debut...
Stepping Out on Their Own...That's right--H and Claire of Steps fame are the first of the group to release a non-Steps song and "DJ" is a pretty impressive start of a solo/duo career...in Steps fashion, the song is pop with several cool (yes, I said cool) dance mixes, the Almighty Mix being my fave so far...the song debuts at a strong #34 this week...
More Li Da Di...Amber once again tries to capitalize on the success of the international 1999-2000 smash "Sexual (Li Da Di)" with her latest...following her #2 single "Yes," Amber offers "We Need to Be Naked" which a chorus that belts "I feel the need to be naked with you..."...Now, just as with "Yes," I am not that impressed with the lyrics of the song (although I do like them both), but the beat is irresistible...Amber has had remarkable Top 50 success...she has scored five #1 hits (This is Your Night, Colour of Love, One More Night, Sexual (Li Da Di)--which was 1999's #1 song, and Above the Clouds), four top 10 hits (If You Could Read My Mind--with Ultra Nate and Jocelyn Enriquez, Object of Your Desire, Love One Another, and Yes), and two top 20 hits (Do That To Me One More Time, Taste the Tears)..."We Need to Be Naked" bows at #38...
They-Say Chart Virgins...The other three debuts on this week's chart are by first time Top 50 artists...at #40 is Res' "They-Say Vision"...at #47 is TJ Davis with "Wonderful Life"...and finally at #49 is 4 Strings with "Take Me Away Into the Night"...last week's only debut, Depeche Mode's "Goodnight Lovers," falls down to #48 after a single week at #45...at this point, it will be fairly difficult for this great song to rebound as most of its airplay was received in the past two months or so...
Walking the Tightrope...Kylie Minogue's "In Your Eyes" finally lets go of the #1 position after seven weeks and falls to #4...as the B-side the UK single and the thirteenth track on the Australian verison of FEVER makes its way to #1, db Boulevard and Mary J. Blige are in the batter's box, at #2 and #3 respectively, and are ready to hit that fly ball that will knock Kylie right off of her "Tightrope" (give me a break, here, it's after 1am!!)..."Tightrope" is Minogue's number one hit following "I Should Be So Lucky," "On A Night Like This," "Your Disco Needs You," "Can't Get You Out of My Head," and "In Your Eyes"...CGYOOMH rebounds this week and slips back up to #5 after falling to #6 last week...the song is getting fuel by the incredible bootleg version of the song called "Can't Get Blue Monday Out of My Head," a remix of the live version from the 2002 Brit Awards...the song is also in its 35th week on the Top 50 and is certain to break Gabrielle's 44-week record for weeks on the chart..."...Eyes" will likely see a resurgence on the chart as it is released as the second US single...also look for "Love at First Sight" and "Boy" to inch toward the chart...I've been listening to "Boy" a bit more lately and "Love..." is set to be released as a single on June 2 in the UK and remixes are already surfacing on the net...look for Blige and Boulevard to make a go for #1, attempting to end Kylie's Top 50 reign of an incredible fourteen weeks...
Can't Get Enough...of Darren Hayes' "Insatiable"...thanks to Nick for referring me to the Metro Mix as its much better than the Victor Calderone Club Mix I had been listening to...I like the Metro Mix enough that the song gets a healthy boost to #6 this week...this is the first time Hayes has been in the top 10 since Savage Garden hit #1 in 2000 with "Crash and Burn"...Enrique Iglesias, although losing some points this week, manages to hold #7 for a second week with "Escape"...
Not-So-Pretty in Pink...so she says as "Don't Let Me Get Me" moves up a notch to #9...while it seems that Pink may be losing steam with her latest two hits, don't count her out yet...DLMGM should continue to move up the chart as the remixes for the song are growing on me and "Just Like A Pill" will likely revisit the top 10 despite falling to #12 after two weeks at #5...releasing the song as a single would also help give it a boost...also slipping from the top 10 is Flip and Fill featuring Kelly Llorenna with "True Love Never Dies"...another song that could see a rebound, it is pushed down in a crowded chart...Lasgo makes its top 10 debut with "Something," which will likely make my favorites list at the end of the year...the song moves up to #8 this week...Natalie Imbruglia, who scored a #11 hit last year with her comeback single "That Day" fell from the Top 50 a few weeks ago with its follow-up but manages to hit the top 10 in the song's rechart and twelfth week on the chart..."Wrong Impression" is at #10 this week and is Imbruglia's third appearance in the top 10 (Torn and Smoke both hit the top 10 in 98-99)...
She's Outta Love...but she's "stronger than before..."...Anastacia looks to be charting with her biggest Top 50 since the 2000 #1 smash hit "I'm Outta Love"..."One Day in Your Life" takes a ten-place jump this week and scores COMBO HIT, landing at #23...it's Anastacia's highest charting song since "Love is Alive" hit #11 last year...in a fairly slow week for chart movers, the Pet Shop Boys score AIRPLAY HIT with the B-side to their current UK single "Home and Dry" (which rebounds this week and moves from #49 to #42) called "Sexy Northerner"...the song moves eight notches to #29 this week...SALES HIT belongs to Shakira's "Underneath Your Clothes (Remix)"...her voice actually irritates me but I just can't get enough of it...I find myself singing her songs in the middle to the work day--even when they're not in my cd player...the song moves up to #33 this week...
Washed Clean of a Top 10...Alanis Morrissette seemed destined to renew the top 10 success she last saw in 1999, but "Hands Clean" falls short and plunges to #21 after two weeks at #11...Billie Ray Martin should get another shot at the top 10 as "I've Never Been to Memphis" slips a notch to #14 but should make a turn around once the tough top 10 clears a bit...Victoria Beckham may not have seen the success of Geri or Mel C, but "A Mind of its Own" bested her #24 hit "Not Such An Innocent Girl" by hitting #15...it drops to #16 this week and is unlikely to move back up the chart...Timo Maas and Eiffel 65 lose the chart battle this week and fall to #45 and #46 with "To Get Down" and "New Life," respectively...
MUSIC is Paradise...Madonna's "Paradise (Not for Me)," the ninth Top 50 hit and the only non-top 10 hit from MUSIC reverses its track and moves back up to #22 this week...the song is fueled by several remixes I downloaded this week...also, look for MUSIC to score a 100% chart record as I found several mixes of "Nobody's Perfect" which should put the song on the chart...
Look for more music coming in the coming weeks as I have enough to keep the chart active for the next couple of months...Artists that will be making a bid for a spot on the Top 50 include S Club 7, New Order, Mareeko, Cher, Matt Darey, Rik Waller, Jamiroquai, Moby, Lisa Loeb, and many more...
Check out Michael Holland's review of Indie.Arie's debut album (see link below) and Nick Oswald's review of Darren Hayes' SPIN...
Until next week...
