**NUMBER ONE**

Your Disco Needs You:  Kylie Minogue

7 #1/5wks biggest Top 50 hit

COMMENTARY ON THIS WEEK'S TOP 50:

It's the first chart week of April and the first chart week of the second quarter of 2001 and Kylie Minogue is still holding strong in her fifth week at the top of the chart with "Your Disco Needs You."  However, challengers are approaching and the next couple of weeks could prove very interesting in the struggle for the pole position.  Madonna is inching closer to the top spot with the superb "What it Feels Like for a Girl."  The song is the fourth top 10 hit from MUSIC and moves up to #4 this week.

The big challenger, however, will likely be the surprisingly excellent Britney Spears single "Don't Let Me Be the Last to Know."  The remixed version of the song has moved to #8 in its fourth chart week to become Spears' fourth top 10 chart hit ("Baby...One More Time" #1; "(You Drive Me) Crazy" #2; "Stronger" #6).  "Don't..." takes a record this week as well as it becomes the first chart song to take the COMBO HIT for three weeks.  Many records have done it twice, but none have met this feat until now.  I expect this one to become Britney's biggest Top 50 hit to date.

In other top 10 news, Janet Jackson returns to the top 10 for the first time since 1999 when he hit #8 with "Everytime" from THE VELVET ROPE ("Doesn't Really Matter" from NUTTY PROFESSOR II: THE KLUMPS only made it to #16 in 2000).  "All for You" is a fine song and is reminiscent of the Janet of old.  Besides "Together Again," there really wasn't another big song on THE VELVET ROPE.  "All For You" is fun and very "If"-esque.  Dido finally breaks the top 10 with her second Top 50 "Thank You" ("Here with Me" peaked at #14 in late 2000).

Tamia's "Stranger in My House (Remix)," which seemed to be loosing steam last week moves ahead full throddle this week and lands at #11.  The song was powered by two nights at the club as the energy from the people dancing to this song was enough to renew my interest in it.  In fact, last night I boogied my little heiney off to it as well.  I expect this one to break the top 10 next week.

The Sugababes score their first top 20 hit with "Run for Cover."  The song takes SALES HIT this week and moves from #32 to #20.  Their first Top 50 hit "Overload" made it to #28 on the chart in 2000.  Gabrielle may finally have the big hit to follow the #1 success of last year's "Rise" as her latest single "Out of Reach" takes AIRPLAY HIT and moves twelve positions to #30.  Gabrielle has charted with four other tunes since "Rise" hit #1 last year but has yet to burn up the charts.  "...Reach" is making big moves just as "Rise" did when it debuted on the chart.

Steps scores its tenth Top 50 hit with "You'll Be Sorry," their third Top 50 from BUZZ.  The song takes this week's DEBUT HIT and enters the chart at #38.  This is the group's third highest debut on the Top 50 ("Stay with Me" bowed at #31 and "Better the Devil You Know" at #36--both in 2000 and both top 3 hits).  The other six debuts this week feature first time artists and a few returning artists.  At #45 is Brenda K. Starr's fourth Top 50 hit.  She scored two Top 50 hits in the late 80's including the #1 smash "I Still Believe" (featuring Mariah Carey on backing vocals) and the top 20 hit "What You See is What You Get."  She returned to the Top 50 last year with the remixed club tune "Feels So Good," a top 40 hit.  "Hold Me," her latest Top 50 is a strong club tune and could be the chart hit she's been looking for since her #1 debut.

UK favorite Tima Reece debuts her #1 hit "Crazy About You" at #46 this week.  Karen Ramirez makes her debut just behind Reece at #47 with "Looking for Love."  At #48, Tiffany scores an eleventh Top 50 hit with "Piss U Off" from the Fall 2000 release THE COLOR OF SILENCE.  This is the album's second chart hit.  "I'm Not Sleeping," the album's first single featuring Krayzie Bone, spent three weeks atop the Top 50 in November 2000.  Jennifer Lopez returns to the Top 50 after missing the chart with her last two singles--the dreadful "Let's Get Loud" and the 'it sounds like everything else on the radio' "Love Don't Cost a Thing."  Her second single from J-LO is called "Play" and although the original isn't a bad tune at all, I'm charting the song solely on a remix that is mostly an instrumental.  Finally, Anastacia returns to the chart with her third single from NOT THAT KIND.  "I'm Outta Love," the album's first single, debuted on the Top 50 last year and broke all sorts of records.  The song still holds the record for the biggest jump into the pole position (#13-#1) and for taking the most number of weeks to hit #1 (an amazing 20).  The title track to the album didn't chart.  I recently downloaded a copy of her cover of the classic "Love is Alive" and am loving it (3rd Party took this song to #1 in 1997).

There is lots of other chart action this week.  Most notable is the eleven position move of Fragma's third Top 50 single "You Are Alive."  I just can't seem to get enough of this song.  It has already been remixed and released as a single in the UK.  I've heard the mixes and they're awesome, but as I don't have a copy of them yet, I'm charting the song based on its excellent album version.  Mikaila's second Top 50 becomes her second top 20 this week.  "It's All Up to You" makes an eleven place move as well, landing at #19 this week.  Samantha Mumba moves from #41 to #33 with her second chart hit "Baby Come on Over (This is Our Night)."  After hearing some other songs from her album before I heard this one, I was sure Mumba would be a one-hit wonder with the #10 hit "Gotta Tell You."  This song, however, is likable and should easily remove the one-hit wonder label from the Irish popster.

Kristine W and Da Buzz are able to rebound this week because of very little middle chart competition and a push from last week's new entries.

What goes up must come down!!  Kylie Minogue's "Light Years" stalls after two weeks at #2 and slips a notch to #3 this week.  It was the fifth top 10 hit from LIGHT YEARS.  S Club 7 had what looked to be another big big hit to follow-up the #1 "You're My Number One" but this week, after a single week at #10, "Never Had a Dream Come True" tumbles to #16.  Nina Gordon, however, takes the week's biggest plunge.  After peaking at #15 two weeks ago, "Now I Can Die" slipped to #16 last week and this week freefalls to #43.  It was Gordon's second Top 50 hit.  "Tonight and the Rest of My Life" hit #2 in late 2000.
