COMMENTARY ON THIS WEEK'S TOP 50:
Oh the Drama!!!...Mary J. Blige scores her highest charting Top 50 of her career with this week's SALES HIT "No More Drama"...the song, featuring the excellent sampling of probably my fave instrumental "Nadia's Theme" (soap opera fans will recognize the piano tune as once the theme music to "The Young and the Restless")...Blige previously peaked as high as #23 with Elton John on "I Guess That's Why They Call it the Blues (Live)"...Blige will likely see her first top 10 hit ever with this gem...she has hit the Top 50 previously with "Your Child" and "Family Affair"...her current hit races up eleven positions to #22...
Living Again...Could Cher's latest single put some life into the dying US release of LIVING PROOF...my personal favorite song from the album, "Alive Again," sees its single release in Switzerland and Germany and my hope is to see it take Cher to the top of the charts once again...the song makes its debut as the third Top 50 from the album at #43 this week...Cher hit #1 with "The Music's No Good without You" and #3 with "(This is) A Song for the Lonely" (currently at #5)...her album, after three weeks in release, has fallen out of the Billboard Top 30...Sophie Ellis-Bextor sees her second Top 50 hit with "Move This Mountain," which comes in at #48...
Two Steps Forward, Three Steps Back..."Catch 22" is Erasure's latest Top 50 hit...the song debuts at #46 (yes, two places in front of Sophie and three places behind Cher)...the song is the fourth Top 50 hit from LOVEBOAT...the album produced two top 10 hits with "Freedom" and "Moon and the Sky" and a top 20 hit with "Here in My Heart"...the album hasn't spawned the hits that their previous studio work did--COWBOY scored Erasure a string of top 10 hits including the #1 smashes "Don't Say Your Love is Killing Me," "Rain," "Boy," and "Save Me Darling"...
Getting on with the Party...Pink's third Top 50 hit from M!SSUNDAZTOOD takes this week's AIRPLAY HIT and blasts eleven notches to #18..."Don't Let Me Get Me" was called Pink's best work by Billboard reviewers and shows that the success of her first album was just the beginning...she had the first #1 of 2002 with "Get the Party Started" and is currently at #6 with the album track "Just Like a Pill"...expect to see Pink with two top 10 hits in the next couple of weeks...
Something Big...Lasgo, after a modest second week six-place move, rockets eleven places to #29 and easily snags this week's COMBO HIT with "Something"...I can't get enough of this song, which was first a hit in Denmark and then in the UK...thanks to Adam for introducing me to this one...
What on Earth...Kylie's "In Your Eyes" continues its reign of the Top 50 and holds #1 for a fifth consecutive week...she also holds the #2 and #3 positions with "Can't Get You Out of My Head" and "Tightrope," respectively..."CGYOOMH" regains its bullet this week, fueled by the perfect Blue Monday Remix from the Brit Awards...the remix will appear on the single for "Love at First Sight," which is slated for a May 27 release overseas...a dj friend played "In Your Eyes (Juzzy Extended Mix)" last night at the club and it packed the dancefloor...as FEVER holds #9 for a second week on Billboard's Top 200 Albums Chart, "CGYOOMH" slips to #10 on the singles chart, moves up to #5 on VH-1's video countdown, and finally hit the top spot on MTV's TRL this week...Minogue is also performing this weekend at MTV's Spring Break kick off...the show airs several times throughout the weekend, including Saturday night at 10pm and Sunday morning at 8:30am or 9am...
What else is happening on the chart?...Flip and Fill featuring Kelly Llorenna skips three places to challenge Minogue's top 3 hold with "True Love Never Dies" while the downbeat dance tune "Point of View" by db Boulevard jumps five places to land at #7...Enrique Iglesias scores his fifth top 10 hits with "Escape" at #9 ("Bailamos" hit #1, "Be With You" hit #3, "I Have Always Loved You" hit #3, and "Hero" hit #8)...Iglesias missed the top 10 with "Rhythm Divine," "Sad Eyes," and "Could I Have This Kiss Forever?" (with Whitney Houston)...former Savage Garden vocalist Darren Hayes edges closer to scoring his first top 10 solo hit as "Insatiable" moves to #13 this week...Alanis Morrissette has a great week with "Hands Clean," which jumps nine places to #15...if the song hits the top 10, it will be Morrissette's first top 10 showing since "Supposed Former Infatuation Junkie" hit #6 in 1999...Sa-Fire's remixed "Don't Break My Heart," which never charted upon its original release in the late 80's, moves up to #19...it is her first chart appearance since 1990 when she hit #2 with "I Will Survive"...Sa-Fire scored two #1 hits with "Thinking of You" and "Gonna Make It" in the late 80's...S Club 7's "You" is now charting as a remix only...the song moves up to #23 this week and is gaining points based on the Almight Remix of the tune...Victoria "Posh Spice" Beckham has her highest charting solo Top 50 hit as "A Mind of its Own" moves up to #21 this week, besting the #24 peak of her first solo Top 50 hit "Not Such An Innocent Girl"...Madonna's "Paradise (Not for Me)" drops a notch to #20 after hitting only #19 last week...Madonna has charted nine of the ten tracks from MUSIC and this is the first not to make it to at least #6--the album produced four #1 hits with "Music," "Don't Tell Me," "What it Feels Like for a Girl," and "Impressive Instant"...Jessica Folker's remix of "To Be Able to Love" gives the song another good week on the Top 50 as it moves nine notches to #30...Pet Shop Boys stalled at #20 last week and drop to #27 this week with their latest single "Home and Dry"...look for the B-sides to the single to make a run for the chart in the coming weeks...
