COMMENTARY ON THIS WEEK'S TOP 50:
As expected this week, Kylie Minogue's fierce tune "Your Disco Needs You" holds #1 for a second week and becomes her highest charting single (her three previous #1 hits spent only a single week in the pole position). As Minogue's nearest threat is still fairly far behind in points, I expect she will see at least a third week at #1. Click the picture below and the link will take you to the video for "Your Disco Needs You."
Other top 10 stuff...Leann Rimes moves up to #2 with "Can't Fight the Moonlight," but will more than likely not even present a challenge to Minogue at #1. BSB slip to #3 after a single week at #2 with their highest charting single on the Top 50. With last week's weak top 10, Da Buzz is able to make a healthy three-place move to #4 this week with a second top 5 from DA SOUND called "Do You Want Me." Interesting point: their former Top 50 #1 hit "Let Me Love You" (#35 this week) is currently storming up Billboard's Club Play charts. Kylie Minogue scores a fourth top 5 hit from LIGHT YEARS as the title track rockets to #5. This could be the song to challenge "..Disco.." is the next few weeks. Kina's second top 10 continues to sneak toward the top as "Me" moves to #6 this week. Steps' latest top 10 effort jumps to #8, while Deborah Gibson scores her twenty-fourth top 10 hit with the title track to the March 6 release M.Y.O.B. The song blasts from #14 to #9. Malina scores her first top 10 hit with "By Your Side," making a healthy move from #15 to #10.
Awards this week can be found in the middle region of the chart. Janet Jackson easily snags the COMBO HIT title and biggest point gainer as "All 4 U" makes a ten-position move to #33. Runner-up point total and SALES HIT belongs to Amanda Ghosts rechart of "Filthy Mind," which moves twelve to #27. Third place and AIRPLAY HIT belongs to Tamia's "Stranger in My House (Remix)." I don't know what's happened, but this song has been growing on me and growing on me ever since I was out a few weeks ago. I really hated it the first time I heard it but it's a pretty decent groove. It moves from #33 to #24 this week.
DO YOU HAVE ID? Three debuts this week and they're all from teen pop princesses. DEBUT HIT is Mikaila's second Top 50 hit, the follow-up to the #9 smash "So in Love With Two," called "It's All Up to You." This great ballad comes in at #44. Not far behind is the debut of Tonya Mitchell at #47 with "Broken Promises." And finally at #50, Britney Spears returns to the chart with her eighth Top 50 hit "Don't Let Me Be the Last to Know." Of these three tunes, I expect the Mikaila song to be 'big hit.' While Mitchell is talented, the sound is old and becoming oh so tiresome. Spears...well she just irritates me and I usually get sick of her music fairly quickly (albeit "Stronger" was a great tune).
The Top 50 is in somewhat of a cool-down period as there really isn't any super strong record on the boards (with the exception of "Your Disco Needs You"). I'm blaming this on two things. I haven't had much time on the internet lately and the time that I've had has been spent trying to locate stuff that isn't filtered on Napster. It hasn't been easy. The second reason is that there just isn't a lot of good music out there. Last Sunday, I actually found myself listening to the radio and enjoying it and even staying on the same station during commercials. Then I realized something...the station was playing the likes of Human League, Level 42, Simple Minds, OMD, and all of the other great John Hughes movie songs and mid-80's new wave gems. That explained everything.
I don't know what it is about Beyonce's Child...umm...er...I mean Destiny's Child and this song "Survivor." It sucks. Every half hour or so, while I'm in my office, I can hear the song coming from the radio in a co-worker's office. When is Beyonce going to release her one successful solo album so I can NOT have to hear DC anymore? I mean, come on, did you check out ICON on MTV. It was Beyonce during her best Christina Aguilera impression while her two backup singers screeched on a verse or two and joined her for the chorus of "Let's Wait a While." If I didn't know before that they CAN'T perform live, I surely know it now. It's time to move on people...
On a positive note relating to ICON...I loved Macy Gray's rendition of "Love Will Never DO (Without You)" and N Sync's version of one of my least fave Janet songs "That's the Way Love Goes." The N Sync track is on Napster, but I haven't found the Macy Gray yet. Still looking...
Be happy, be healthy, and laugh....
