COMMENTARY ON THIS WEEK'S TOP 50:
Another week, another Kylie song...As "In Your Eyes" scores Kylie Minogue a fourth week at #1, we bring her total of consecutive weeks at the top to ten (out of eleven chart weeks so far in 2002) and she also continues her reign of the top 2 with five consecutive weeks...as "Tightrope" moves up six positions to #3, however, Kylie is not in control of the top 3--something never previously done by another artist on Craig's Top 50...Kylie will certainly be doing battle for the top spot with "...Eyes" and "Tightrope" but now that I've downloaded her Brit Awards performance, don't count out that "Can't Get You Out of My Head" could return to the top spot--fueled by the incredible live performance of the song mixed with New Order's 80's smash "Blue Monday"...Next week should be interesting as Kylie challenges herself--which FEVER track will come out on top???...
Or...it could go this way...Flip and Fill featuring Kelly Llorenna rocket into the top 10 at #7 with "True Love Never Dies"...this tune, as well as this weeks AIRPLAY/SALES HIT "Point of View" by db Boulevard--moving to #12 this week, are the two nearest threats to Kylie's top 3 success...both of these songs have the potential to set up an interesting battle for the pole position in the coming weeks...add to the mix a great tune by Enrique Iglesias ("Escape"--#11) and it's going to be a hard battle...
It's 'happenin' all over again'...that's right, Lonnie Gordon returns to the top 10 this week with her latest "A God That Can Dance"...Gordon previously hit the top 10 with her only other Top 50 song "Happenin' All Over Again"...also making a top 10 debut this week is the third (yes, as much as I love her music, only the third) top 10 from Hip-Hopper-turned-Bluesy-Rock artist Pink...Pink's hit #13 with "There You Go" and then made it to #4 with the terrific tune "Most Girls" but she missed the top 10 with "You Make Me Sick" (the song hit the top 20) and missed the top 20 with her work on "Lady Marmalade"...the first single from her latest album, however, was the first #1--"Get the Party Started"-- song of 2002...now, she's charting with an album track ("Just Like a Pill" #9) and her latest single ("Don't Let Me Get Me" #29)...expect Pink to continue her hit streak throughout 2002 as M!SSUNDAZTOOD is full of potential hits...
First Impressions aren't always that important...Natalie Imbruglia's fantastic tune "Wrong Impression" hit #24 during its first chart run...not have given the song its proper due, I recently downloaded it again and it's making its way onto my regular playlist again and as a result can easily score this week's DEBUT HIT at #41...also making a return to the Top 50 is Eiffel 65 (again, thanks Adam!) with "New Life"...the song opens at #44...Eiffel 65 has scored two other hits on the Top 50: "Blue" hit #5 in early 2000 and "Move Your Body" hit #8 the same year)...
Home Town Girl...Baltimore-area artist Ultra Nate returns to the Top 50 as well this week, at #46 with her latest single from STRANGER THAN FICTION called "I Don't Understand It"...and the last of the four debuts this week comes from Sky Tyler..."Tear it All Apart" is the second Top 50 from her debut album and follows the top 10 hit "I'm Not Alone Anymore" (#30 this week)...
Check out Michael Holland's review of Indie.Arie's debut album (see link below)...
Until next week...
