**NUMBER ONE** Your Disco Needs You: Kylie Minogue |
3 | fourth #1 hit | |
COMMENTARY ON THIS WEEK'S TOP 50:
Feel the heat as you dance to the disco beat....Boy is the United States losing out on this one. Kylie Minogue scores her fourth #1 hit with the latest from her album LIGHT YEARS. "Your Disco Needs You" rockets to #1 in its third week. This move to the pole position breaks the record previously set by Tina Cousins' "Killin' Time," which only took four weeks to hit the top spot in late 2000. "Disco" also breaks the record for the largest point gain within the top 10 (previously set at +17 by Whitney Houston and Deborah Cox with "Same Script, Different Cast"). Incidentally, Minogue also takes the biggest mover within the top 10, a record that can only be tied and never beaten. "Disco" should be fairly secure in the top spot as the nearest bulleted song on the chart is way back at #7. By looking at the chart, Minogue's closest threat is probably Deborah Gibson (#14) with this week's SALES HIT, "MYOB." Minogue may challenge herself in the next few weeks with "Light Years," which becomes her eighth top 10 hit at #9 this week. Also noteworthy, Kylie re-released LIGHT YEARS this week with a bonus cd including four remixed tunes and two videos...mine is on the way!!
Kina scores a second top 10 hit with her second Top 50 hit "Me," which moves up to #8 this week. Steps also returns to the top 10 this week with "It's the Way You Make Me Feel" at #10. The top is full of stale records right now and although each of these records is holding its own, there are virtually no point gains to speak of this week. Backstreet Boys, Leann Rimes, S Club 7, Kristine W, and Cyndi Lauper will likely hover around for a week or so more until the records moving through the top 30 have a chance to knock them out of the top 10. Of course, anything can happen from week to week.
Way back at #35, Madonna steals the COMBO HIT award with "Time Stood Still (Remix)" from the soundtrack for THE NEXT BEST THING. I discovered the mix of the tune when I was franticly attempting to get everything I could out of Napster before it sees a complete shut down. Dream's first Top 50 scores AIRPLAY HIT. "This is Me" moves up to #38 this week. DEBUT HIT belongs to a reentry. Amanda Ghost barely hit the Top 50 last year with "Filthy Mind" and after hearing the song in an episode of "Queer as Folk" on Showtime, I started listening to it again and boy am I insane. This song, as I'm sure most of you know, is wonderful.
Also, returning to the Top 50 this week is Janet Jackson at #43 with "All 4 U." Lara Fabian makes a third appearance with "Love by Grace" at #45. Thanks to Ryan inquiring about French Affair, as they make their Top 50 debut at #46. Speaking of the chart club...my #1 Retro song for 1974 returns to the Top 50 this week as Sherrie Austin covers Dolly Parton's "Jolene." Kay Cee, who scored a Top 50 with "Millennium Stringz" in early 2000, returns this week with "Unsolved Mysteries." Also, finally jumping on the Moby bandwagon, he scores his second Top 50 ("Everytime You Touch Me" hit #8) with "Bittersweet Symphony," which I've heard over and over again but had no clue was Moby.
Well, I'm heading out into clubland tonight and I hope to see some of my faves from my chart and some new tunes to become my charts-to-come faves. I hope this finds everyone in good health and happy. Remember, send me your charts and don't forget to check out "Mt. Vernon Square." Any and all feedback is appreciated.
Enjoy
Craig
