**NUMBER ONE** You're My Number One: S Club 7 |
8 | #1/1wk | |
COMMENTARY ON THIS WEEK'S TOP 50:
S Club 7 scores its first #1 hit with "You're My Number One," which takes advantage of a relatively week top 10. The group had already scored a #11 hit with "Natural" and is currently rocketing up the charts with "Never Had a Dream Come True," which moves from #40 to #29 this week. How long will the song 'be their number one?' Well, with Leann Rimes making a healthy move to #4 from #11 with "Can't Fight the Moonlight" and the BSB making a move from #5 to #3 with "The Call," next week is up in the air for S Club 7. There's also a threat from....
Kylie Minogue is traveling LIGHT YEARS with two songs from her latest album. Moving from #24 to #14 is the title track to the international pop sensation's latest project. Besting that, however, is the fifth top 10 from the album, "Your Disco Needs You," which rockets to #10 in its second chart week (it broke Madonna's record for highest debut last week as it landed at #22 on the survey). LIGHT YEARS is by far Kylie's most successful album on the Top 50.
**KYLIE MINOGUE FANS TAKE NOTE--THIS WEEK MARKS THE RERELEASE OF LIGHT YEARS IN THE UK, REPACKAGED WITH THE ORIGINAL ALBUM AND A REMIXED CD**
The bottom half of the top 10 sees a situation not often found on the Top 50. Positions 6 through 9 all hold despite gaining some points. It is more than likely that all four of these records will continue to see at least slight point gains over the next week or two (after that, it's hard to tell).
Kristine W's "Lovin' You" exits the top 10 again after a record twenty-five non-consecutive weeks in the top 10. In other Kristine W news, "Stronger" finally falls off of the countdown after thirty-four consecutive weeks on the chart--another record. Ms. W also just finished a three-week run at #1 with "Let Love Reign," which falls to #2 this week. In all, Kristine W has spent seventeen weeks at the pole position with songs from STRONGER ("Clubland"-1 week; "Stand in Love"-6 weeks; "Lovin' You"-7 weeks; "Let Love Reign"-3 weeks).
Several records are lined up and pounding on the door to the top 10. Kina's second top 20 hit moves up to #12. "Me" is the follow-up to the #1 "Girl from the Gutter" (currently at #39). Steps seems to be well on its way to another top 10 hit with the second single from BUZZ called "It's the Way You Make Me Feel." Steps had a great amount of chart success in late 1999 and into 2000 ("One For Sorrow"-#1; "Tragedy"-#5; "Deeper Shade of Blue"-#2; "Better the Devil You Know"-#1; "Love's Got a Hold on My Heart"-#6; "Stay with Me"-#3; "Stomp"-#29; "Heartbeat"-#21). Vernessa Mitchell reaches #15 with her first Top 50 hit "Issues." Gabrielle's third top 20 hit from RISE ("Rise" #1; "Sunshine #6) moves up to #16 this week. Da Buzz is currently charting with three top 20 hits. The former #1 "Let Me Love You" is at #17, the current top 10 "Do You Want Me" is at #8, and their third Top 50 single is "Paradise," which moves to #19 this week.
Westlife scores its biggest chart hit as "My Love" surpasses the #27 peak of "Swear it Again" and lands at #22 this week. The group has had insurmountable success on other personal charts and the UK chart, but have yet to really break through on the Top 50. "My Love" will likely be their first top 20 hit.
Deborah Gibson is scorching the chart as "MYOB," the title track from her soon-to-be-released album takes the AIRPLAY/SALES HIT award and blasts an amazing twelve positions to #23. The album's first single "What You Want" peaked at #5 in late 2000.
DEBUT HIT belongs to a song that I wasn't originally going to chart. "Stranger in My House" by Tamia charts fueled by the remix (that I blasted in a Yahoo Chart Club post but I've been giving more air time). It's certainly not of the caliber of "Nobody's Supposed to Be Here" by Deborah Cox, but this similar remix has grown on me and makes its debut at #42.
Dido's "Thank You" makes her second Top 50 hit as it enters the chart at #43. Her first chart hit, "Here with Me," peaked at #14 last year. Also entering the Top 50 this week is Madonna's 65th Top 50 hit. While cruising Napster two weeks ago, I found the remix of "Time Stood Still" from the soundtrack for THE NEXT BEST THING. The song enters the chart at #46. Dream scores its first Top 50 at #46 with "This is Me."
Other charting tunes make decent moves this week. Malina continues to claw her way up the chart with "By Your Side," which moves from #34 to #24 this week. Madonna also scores a big mover with the third single from MUSIC. "What it Feels Like for a Girl" blasts eleven notches to #28. S Club 7, as mentioned above, moves to #27 with "Never Had a Dream Come True." Nina Gordon seems to have gained momentum with her second Top 50 hit "Now I Can Die," which moves from #36 to #27 this week. Bananarama moves to #34 with their latest single, a cover of Wham!'s #1 smash "Careless Whisper."
Sheena Easton gives up and drops to #32 after a week at #29 with her cover of "Giving Up, Giving In." U2, after two weeks at #15, tumbles to #20 with "Beautiful Day." Kristine W's "Lovin' You" rebounded to #4 but falls to #11 this week. Roxette holds steady at #18 with "Stars." Toni Braxton rechart of "Spanish Guitar" plummets to #26 after a single week at #13.
So that's the chart for this week. Some of you who usually email me your charts haven't been doing so the last several weeks. I would love to see what you're listening to so keep the emails coming. Until next week, be healthy, be safe, and most of all--laugh at life.
