COMMENTARY ON THIS WEEK'S TOP 50:
March comes in like a lion with Kylie Minogue King of the Jungle...Minogue holds the top two spots for the third consecutive week with the nine-week #1 smash "Can't Get You Out of My Head" at #2 for a second week while "In Your Eyes," its international follow-up, scores a second week at #1...down the chart at #21, Minogue also takes the DEBUT HIT with the B-side to the UK single for "In Your Eyes," and the thirteenth track available only on the Australian version of FEVER--"Tightrope" should easily secure itself as the third #1 hit from FEVER as it's one of my favorite songs--if not my favorite right now--on FEVER...I can't understand why such a beautiful pop ballad would have been left off of the UK and US printings of the album...
Driving up the chart...is DB Boulevard with its first Top 50 hit, a mellow dance track called "Point of View"...I was first exposed to this song on Top of the Pops on BBC America and the lead singer's performance reminded me of Allison Moyet...I downloaded it to a cd for a friend of mine (along with other songs from my Top 50) and this one was her instant favorite (goes to show you that lesbians do have good taste in music, eh?!)...the song rockets from #46 to #32 in its second chart week...
The Lighthouse Family scores this week's AIRPLAY hit with a little pop tune called "Run"...the song moves up to #36 this week and is the group's second Top 50 hit following the #24 peak of "I Wish I Knew How it Would Feel to Be Free"...although doubted in last week's commentary, Alanis Morrissette's comeback hit "Hands Clean" steals SALES HIT this week...while I doubted the song, I have been listening to it more and more this week and it's really starting to grow on me alot...the song jumps to #40 this week...
Meanwhile, Cher isn't lonely in the top 5 with "(This is) A Song for the Lonely," the second release from LIVING PROOF--which hit stores on Tuesday the 26th...the song, while not the strongest tune on the set, gets a huge push from all of the publicity surrounding the album's release in the US...she has made appearances on Letterman, Today, Primetime Thursday on ABC, and Rosie...however, the song has yet to see the Hot 100 on Billboard so it could very well mean that this isn't the BELIEVE 2002 everyone had anticipated...this week, though, the song scoots to #4...
Can't Fight a Third Top 10...Leann Rimes scores only her third top 10 hit on Craig's Top 50 as "Soon (Remix)" pushes its way into the upper regions of the chart at #8...the song follows the #2 success of "How Do I Live" and "Can't Fight the Moonlight (Remix)"--at #26 this week...Rimes scored a #11 hit with "I Need You" and a Top 50 with "But I Do Love You"...with the recent UK release of a remix of the latter, it could surface on the Top 50 again in the coming weeks...
Sky Tyler's first Top 50 hit "I'm Not Alone Anymore" takes a point gain after slipping to #7 last week...the song manages to hold its #7 spot and regain a bullet and could even see itself moving back up the charts next week...the song has already spent two weeks at #6...Gabrielle's latest seems to have run out of steam at #5 as it holds the position a second week..."If I Walked Away" is the second new single from DREAMS CAN COME TRUE--GREATEST HITS VOLUME 1, following the #2 smash "Don't Need the Sun to Shine (To Make Me Smile)"--which sits at #17 this week...
Women on the verge...Several songs are making the way through the top 20 and heading for the top 10...at #11 is Laura Branigan's independent label cover of ABBA's "The Winner Takes it All"...Reina, featured on vocals with Heaven on "Got a Love for You," is at #12...Jennifer Lopez 2001 top 5 hit "Ain't it Funny" moves up to #13...at #14, Thea Austin is the featured vocalist on Pusaka's "You're the Worst Thing for Me"...Lonnie Gordon (who is also featured in our 1990 Dance Retro in the GayTop40Charts club on Yahoo) is up to #15 with "A God That Can Dance"...at #16, Suzanne Palmer's first Top 50 hit "Hide U" edges up a notch...Pink's second top 20 from M!SSUNDAZTOOD called "Just Like a Pill" moves up to #18 this week...it's the follow-up to her first #1 hit "Get the Party Started"...at #19, Kelly Llorenna helps Flip and Fill on vocals with the great pop/dance tune "True Love Never Dies"...finally, Belinda Carlisle returns to the top 20 with "A Prayer for Everyone" at #20, after spending two weeks at #22...
Let Me Get Another Hit...I already commented on Kylie's "Tightrope" being the top debut this week...what else is happening???...Pink scores a third Top 50 hit from her sophomore album (see above) with the official second single "Don't Let Me Get Me"...the song was my favorite song on the album the first time I listened to it and has been a staple in my daily listening since...the song bows at #44...at #46, Jakatta takes a first top 10 with "Ever So Lonely," another UK pop/dance hit...Alcazar, who saw little Top 50 success with "Crying at the Discotecque" (#41) returns with a song that I enjoy much more..."Sexual Guarantee" enters the chart this week at #49...and finally, Daniel Bedinfield (and I'm too lazy to make sure that's how his name is spelled) enters the Top 50 at #50 with "Gotta Get Thru This," a song that has been bubbling under the Top 50 for weeks and weeks now...
Until next week...
