COMMENTARY ON THIS WEEK'S TOP 50:

As with last week's chart, this week's chart doesn't offer excitement within the top 20, however the bottom half of the chart is chock full of heavy hitters, including a record debut.  Here goes..

First and foremost, Kylie Minogue beats the DEBUT HIT record Madonna set last year with "Music."  "Your Disco Needs You" enters the chart at #22, nixing the #23 record set by Madonna.  "Disco" is Minogue's fifth Top 50 hit from LIGHT YEARS following "Spinning Around" (#7), "On A Night Like This" (#1), "Please Stay" (#5), and "Light Years" (up to #24 this week from #34).  "Disco" is one of those songs that I can't get out of my head.  Ironically, I burned a cd for a friend a few weeks ago and put this song on it because I knew he would love it.  The song entered his chart last week at #3 and moves up to #2 this week.

Kristine W manages to snag the summit for a third week as songs by matchbox twenty, S Club 7, Ricky Martin and Christina Aguilera, Cyndi Lauper, Da Buzz, and ATC did not gain substantially in airplay points this week.  However, Ms. W's threat for the top next week will likely come from the Backstreet Boys' highest charter to date "The Call."  The song blasts from #9 to #5 and could plow through the top 5 next week to take the #1 position.  This doesn't mean I've given up on the other current top 10 records.  Remember, a lot can happen in a week.

Leann Rimes is at #11 with her recent #10 hit "Can't Fight the Moonlight."  The song is receiving a lot of airplay again and will likely surpass its original peak position.  The rest of the top 20 is full of other small moving chart hits.  Nothing in this group really stands out except for possibly "Me" by Kina.  This will more than likely become her second top 10 hit in the next few weeks.

Several top 20 hits stall and fall this week.  Most notably is Madonna's third top 10 from MUSIC.  After a single week at #6, "Runaway Lover" slips to #12 this week.  A turnaround isn't impossible but my focus has shifted to Madonna's new single (see more below).  U2's "Beautiful Day" holds #15 a second week and may struggle to move any further up the chart.  U2 had great success at the Grammys, but I think the song has done all for me that it will do.  Barry Harris and Pepper Mashay bottom out after a single week at #13 and land at #20 this week with "Dive in the Pool" from the Showtime series "Queer as Folk."  Following at #21 is Aurora's two week #12 cover of Duran Duran's "Ordinary World."  The song features Naimee Coleman on vocals.  Andreas Johnson's "Glorious" is at #23 after a week at #17.

Mailina's "By Your Side" and Deborah Gibson's "MYOB" take the second and third place point gain awards this week.  Both records make healthy moves to #34 and #35, respectively.  Deborah Gibson is having the most chart success she has seen since 1992 with the singles preceding the release of the MYOB album during the first week of March.  Taking the biggest point gainer is Madonna's "What it Feels Like for a Girl."  I downloaded a mix of the song from Napster and have always enjoyed the album version.  The song moves from #49 to #39 this week.

Other healthy movers on the chart include songs by Da Buzz ("Paradise" #37 to #28), Kylie Minogue ("Light Years" #34 to #24), and S Club 7 ("Never Had a Dream Come True" #48 to #40).

We have three other debuts this week.  At #43, Bananarama return to the chart with their current release in France, a cover of Wham!'s #1 smash "Careless Whisper."  The song follows the #11 hit "Robert DeNiro's Waiting 2000" from last year.  Before that, their last single on the chart was the #1 "Every Shade of Blue" from ULTRA VIOLET.  Ultra Nate also returns to the chart with "Get It Up."  She most recently charted in 2000 with "Desire," which peaked at #6.  Gloria Gaynor also returns to the chart this week at #47 with "Just Keep Thinking About You."  Gaynor's last appearance on the Top 50 was in 1991 when "I Will Survive '90" hit #1.

Next week look for a lot of new debuting chart tunes as many records at about to fall off the chart.  Also, the battle for #1 should be interesting.  Can the BSB surpass the #5 peak of their nemesis N Sync's "Bye Bye Bye" with this week's #5 "The Call?"  Can Kristine W hold onto the top spot for a fourth week?

As always, please send me your charts, music reviews, and comments.  They're always welcome and always a treat!!  Until next week...behave!

Craig
