COMMENTARY ON THIS WEEK'S TOP 50:
Okay, so last week I couldn't count...I claimed in the commentary that there seven new entries when in fact their were eight: Billie Ray Martin, Sa-Fire, Jody Watley, Stereophonics, Enrique Iglesias, the Pet Shop Boys, Darren Hayes, and Pusaka featuring Thea Austin. This week, however, there are seven new entries in what is a fairly active chart week. We also have a new #1 from an artist who is certainly used to topping charts...here's a look at this week's Top 50...
After a record-breaking nine weeks at #1 with "Can't Get You Out of My Head," Kylie Minogue is dethroned from the top spot by none other than the hit single's follow-up "In Your Eyes," which easily scoots into the pole position from #2...I downloaded four different remixes of the song so far and that's really pushed the song to #1...The UK single version of "In Your Eyes" features as a B-side the wonderful (and maybe even my fave on FEVER right now) track "Tightrope" which could surface on the Top 50 in the coming weeks...Kylie's FEVER hits stores Tuesday (Feb 26)...
Moving up to score its first top 3 hit is Atomic Kitten at #3 with "You Are"...I received my copy of RIGHT NOW this week and it's actually a pretty decent pop record...I'm not much on the girls' ballads at this point, but look for lots more to chart after this tune, including the UK hit single "Eternal Flame"...Atomic Kitten charted in 2001 with the excellent "Whole Again," which charted based on the spoken verse version...the album contains the sung verse version of the song but I think I'm still siding with the spoken version..."Whole Again" is Atomic Kitten's only other Top 50 hit and it peaked at #9...
Gabrielle continues her string of hits as "If I Walked Away" jumps to #5 this week...I also received my copy of Gabrielle's album DREAMS CAN COME TRUE--GREATEST HITS VOL. 1 this week...the package contains both her current #5 hit as well as the recent #2 smash "Don't Need the Sun to Shine (To Make Me Smile)" (which is at #9 this week)...Of the songs on the GHV1, Gabrielle has hit #1 with "Dreams," "Rise," and "Out of Reach"...Gabrielle also hit the top spot with "Over You," which isn't featured on the album...
Cher makes a hefty jump to #6 this week with "(This is) A Song for the Lonely"...I downloaded four remixes for this one as well this week...can Cher take it to the top?...that's uncertain at this point...while I really do love the song, it would not have been my choice for a lead off single from LIVING PROOF (which hits stores on Tuesday Feb 26 as well)...I am also surprised that the song hasn't even entered the Billboard Hot 100 yet and is hanging low on the Top 40 and Adult Contemporary charts...while this may miss the #1 peak of its predecessor "The Music's No Good Without You," look for lots more hits to follow from the album...
Dido scores her second top 10 hit this week with the fantastic "Hunter"...another song of which I downloaded remixes of this week, this is by far my favorite from NO ANGEL thus far...Dido hit the top 10 before with the hit song "Thank You," which peaked at #7..."Here with Me" peaked at #14 in 2000...Also scoring a second top 10 this week is Melanie Thornton...Thornton, who died in a Swiss plane crash in November 2001, was the female vocals of the duo LaBouche and scored a top 5 hit late in 2001 with her debut solo single "Makin' Oooh Oooh (Talking About Love)"...her album READY TO FLY is available now and was her only solo project...
Leann battles herself and "Can't Fight the Moonlight (Remix)" loses to the newer "Soon (Remix)"...the latter scoots from #17 to #11 this week and helps to push the former from #10 to #12..."Can't..." is actually only five weeks away from tying Gabrielle's chart run record with "Out of Reach," which spent an amazing and unprecedented forty-three weeks in the Top 50 in 2001 and 2002...Rimes' chart run, though, is non-consecutive weeks..."Soon (Remix)" will likely become Rimes third top 10 single ("I Need You" hit #11 in 2000)...
Pusaka featuring Thea Austin have a successful chart debut on its hands as "You're the Worst Thing for Me" not only steals COMBO HIT and moves from #33 to #20 this week, but ties this years biggest chart move ("Murder on the Dancefloor" moved 13 places the week ending 1/26/02)...Kelly Llorenna gives Fill and Flip some vocal assistance on this week's AIRPLAY HIT, "True Love Never Dies"...I first heard this song on BBCAmerica's airing of TOP OF THE POPS...the song makes a healthy move from #36 to #26...
Although I make fun of him as if I can't stand him, I do really enjoy most of Enrique Iglesias' music..."Escape" could very well become my favorite of his releases to date...following the sappy yet enjoyable "Hero," Iglesias picks up the beat a bit for a nice mid-tempo pop piece, complete with great dance remixes...moving eleven positions to #29 this week, "Escape" will more than likely become the Latin star's fifth top 10 hit, following "Bailamos," "Be With You," "I Have Always Loved You," and "Hero"...Iglesias scored a #1 hit in 1999 with "Bailamos"...
I just read in the newspaper this morning that not only is R&B superstar Brandy married, she is also having her first baby in July of this year...as she preps for motherhood, this week her latest moves up a slow two spots to #32--"What About Us" is already a huge Billboard Hot 100 hit, already in the top 10...Brandy's last charter before this was from the incredible album NEVER SAY NEVER and was the #4 smash "Almost Doesn't Count"...Brandy has hit #1 with "The Boy is Mine" (with Monica) and "Have You Ever?"...
S Club 7 scored a #1 smash in early 2001 with the upbeat pop gem "You're My Number One"...this week they take DEBUT hit with fourth Top 50 hit and the only other release to come even close to the dance/pop of their former #1..."You" is a great pop record--could it set the group up to replace Steps at the top of the pop world???...at #44 is a less folksy, more pop song by The Lighthouse Family...the group hit #24 with the nice "I Wish I Knew How it Would Feel to Be Free"..."Run," along with a few remixes, is more standard pop fare...it comes in at #44...
Victoria Beckham becomes the fourth Spice Girl to score two solo Top 50 hits..."A Mind of its Own" follows the #24 charter "Not Such an Innocent Girl"...I was actually surprised when I heard this tune as it really is a great pop record...Could Posh have her first hit?...the song debuts at #45...DB Boulevard debuts their first Top 50 hit "Point of View" at #46...Ian van Dahl scores a second Top 50 hit at #48 with the less monotonous (than "Castles in the Sky") "Will I?"...
Alanis Morrissette returns to the Top 50 with "Hands Clean," a nice piece of pop/rock that will likely get old fairly quickly...the song debuts at #49 and is Morrissette's first Top 50 hit since "Supposed Former Infactuation Junkie," the title track to her second album--that song hit #6...Morrissette's hit list is extensive but she hasn't cranked out a #1 hit since the mega-radio smash "Uninvited"...at #50 is Tiffany's "Open My Eyes" from her THE COLOR OF SILENCE album, released in November 2000...the song was remixed by Mixman Mike and I downloaded a copy of it last week...it's a great pop record from a great album (the album produced the 3-week #1 "I'm Not Sleeping" (featuring Krayzie Bone) and the top 40 song "Piss U Off")...
So how are we doing so far in 2002...with the end of the first two months of the year here, I decided to take a look at where we stood...I changed the point system this year a bit to focus more on chart position and the calendar year chart run and here's where we are now:
1...Can't Get You Out of My Head by Kylie Minogue (1234 points)
2...Don't Need the Sun to Shine (To Make Me Smile) by Gabrielle (1101 points)
3...Loved by Kim Wilde (1063 points)
4...The Power of Goodbye by Who's That Girl? (1030 points)
5...Who Do You Love Now? by Riva featuring Dannii Minogue (960 points)
6...In Your Eyes by Kylie Minogue (946 points)
7...You Are by Atomic Kitten (936 points)
8...Calling by Geri Halliwell (909 points)
9...I'm Not Alone Anymore by Sky Tyler (892 points)
10..If I Walked Away by Gabrielle (808 points)
Now remember, there have only been 8 week so far in 2002, so this list could change as soon as next week...I think it will be interesting to revisit the list again in a month or two and then periodically throughout the year to see how these Top 10 songs hold up against 2002's competition...
Until next week...
