COMMENTARY ON THIS WEEK'S TOP 50:
This week's chart doesn't offer too much in the way of excitement. Most of the music doesn't make huge moves up the chart as it was a fairly light week for me musically. I tend to listen to music mostly at my desk at work and in my car and I've been so busy at work and have had such a bad headache by the end of each day this week that I didn't listen as much as I normally listen to music. I expect next week's chart to reflect a rejuvenated interest in music as I expect life to be much calmer (at least I'm hoping). Here goes the chart...
Kristine W holds a second week at #1 despite the rise of two top spot seekers. "Let Love Reign" barely held back matchbox twenty's "If You're Gone" for the #1 spot this week and next week the boys will be facing a challenge from S Club 7's first top 10 hit "You're My Number One."
Backstreet Boys have their highest charting Top 50 hit with "The Call" as it hops two positions to #9 this week. It is not only their highest charter, but it is also the group's first top 10 hit on my chart.
Da Buzz finally gives up the #2 space this week with their recent #1 hit "Let Me Love You," but they are still a force to be reckoned with. "Do You Want Me" scoots to #10 and easily becomes their second top 10 ("...Love" is at #3 this week). Way down the chart, their third Top 50 hit "Paradise" snags AIRPLAY and SALES HIT status as it rockets ten positions to #37.
Kylie Minogue takes the biggest point gainer this week with the title track to her 2000 release LIGHT YEARS. The song is the fourth Top 50 hit from the album, following "Spinning Around," "On A Night Like This," and "Please Stay."
As Sade's "By Your Side" exits the Top 50 (after peaking at #16), newcomer Malina scores her first Top 50 with another "By Your Side." The song leads this week's debuts at #44. Deborah Gibson follows closely behind with the title track to her scheduled March 6th release M.Y.O.B. This is Gibson's twenty-fourth Top 50 hit. She most recently hit the top 10 with "What You Want" and "You Belong to Me" in late 2000. At #46 is Book of Love's updated classic "Boy 2000." BOL have had some minor successes throughout the years but did manage to score big with music from CANDY CAROL back in 1992/1993. "Alice Everyday" hit #1, "Counting the Rosaries" hit #17, and "Sunny Day" hit #9. They also scored a big #1 with "Tubular Bells/Pretty Boys and Pretty Girls (Regan's House Medley Mix)," which sampled Linda Blair's dialogue from THE EXORCIST (and it remains one of my all time faves to this day). Their last chart appearance was with the mediocre and modest top 40 "Boy Pop."
S Club 7 is also having a great year. After hitting #11 last year with "Natural," the group has scored a top 5 with "You're My Number One" (and as mentioned before, are poised to go to the top with it) and is a debut this week with their latest "Never Had a Dream Come True." This one is actually getting airplay on US radio so maybe we can hope that people in the US realize what great pop music their missing by listening to the same shit over and over again.
The fifth debut on the chart is the 64th Top 50 from Madonna. I downloaded a remix of her upcoming commercial single "What It Feels Like For A Girl." One of my favorite songs on the album MUSIC (and no I don't think Britney should have taken the dedication as a compliment), this is the fourth Top 50 from last year's #1 album. The second and third singles from MUSIC are also currently charting. "Don't Tell Me" rebounds this week and moves to #29. "Runaway Lover" edges a notch to #6.
I expect next week's chart to offer some shuffling since this week's chart was relatively uneventful. Stay tuned...
As always, please send me your charts, music reviews, and comments. They're always welcome and always a treat!! Until next week...behave!
Craig
