COMMENTARY ON THIS WEEK'S TOP 50:
Seven new entries and a record breaking #1 hit are this week's big news...
First...Kylie Minogue scores an unprecedented ninth week at #1, besting Aubrey's "Stand Still" (#39) eight-week run at the top in late 2001...Minogue also scores two concurrent top 2 hits for the second time in less than a year...in mid-2001, "Your Disco Needs You" occupied the top spot while "Light Years" held the #2 spot for two weeks...this week, "Can't Get You Out of My Head" scores a ninth week at #1 while her second single from FEVER moves up to #2--"In Your Eyes" will likely take the top spot next week as I've downloaded several superb remixes of the song...I've also downloaded a lot of other stuff this week as well...
Making the biggest chart entry is the first Top 50 hit for Pusaka called "You're the Worst Thing for Me"...featuring Thea Austin on vocals, I am loving the Thunderpuss remix of this house tune...it bows at #33 this week, the second highest chart debut of 2002 so far to SEB's "Murder on the Dancefloor" (which moves up to #4 this week)...
Coming in at a hefty #37 is Savage Garden's Darren Hayes with his debut solo single "Instatiable"...Hayes was last in the Top 50 with SG on "Affirmation," which peaked at #16...their previous single "Crash and Burn" was the duo's second Top 50 #1 hit (following "To the Moon and Back")...just behind Hayes is one of my all time fave duos...the Pet Shop Boys..."Home and Dry" is the group's latest and scores at #38 this week...PSB's last charted with two #4 hits ("New York City Boy" and "In Denial"--with Kylie Minogue and two top 20 hits "I Don't Know What You Want But I Can Give it to You" and "Break 4 Love" (as featured vocalists on Peter Rauhofer's single)...
Back at #40, Enrique Iglesias "Escape"-s into the top 40 with the follow-up to his #8 hit "Hero"...Iglesias has had one prior #1 hit ("Bailimos") and two top 5 hit ("Be With You" and "I Have Always Loved You")...UK band Stereophonics makes its debut on the Top 50 with "Handbags and Gladrags"...the song makes its debut at #45...
Making her first chart appearance since 1998's "If I'm Not in Love," Jody Watley returns with "Flower"--Watley saw lots of success in the late 80's and early 90's but then all but vanished from the chart after the release of "When a Man Loves a Woman"...She comes in at #46 this week...
Another 80's dance diva returns to the chart with an update of a song that never made my Top 50--"Don't Break My Heart 2002" marks the return of Sa-Fire...after hitting #1 with "Thinking of You" and "Gonna Make It," Sa-Fire literally vanished from the music scene...a nicely updated version of this tune should keep us moving well into 2002....
And finally, I had been searching for this song on the internet for some time but could never download it because the person who had it was never online...now, after hitting #1 with the 1995 smash "Your Loving Arms," #1 with its follow-up "Runnin' Around Town," the top 10 with "Imitation of Life," the Top 50 with "Pacemaker," and #2 with "Honey," Billie Ray Martin returns to the Top 50 with a typical Martin tune--"I've Never Been to Memphis"...the song debuts at #50 this week...
With all of these debuts, a couple of songs fall off of the chart despite moving forward last week...Kaci's awful "I Think I Love You" lost its magic of familiarity this week and vanishes from the Top 50 after peaking at #45 last week...the Corrs' second Top 50 hit "Irresistible" falls out of sight after a single week at #43...
Meanwhile, the top 20 doesn't see much movement, but remains packed with strong records...I expect in the next few weeks, we will start to see the top 20 clear out as some already weakening records make way for the stronger records entering the chart...
Leann Rimes scores a second COMBO HIT this week with "Soon (Remix)"...just as she moves up to #17 with her latest, she also returns to the top 10 with 2001's #2 hit "Can't Fight the Moonlight (Remix)"...Pink's second Top 50 hit from MISSUNDAZTOOD called "Just Like a Pill" moves up to #32 and takes AIRPLAY/SALES HIT this week...the first single from the album was the first #1 of 2002--"Get the Party Started"--and it fell out of the Top 50 this week...Pink also scored a top 5 hit with "Most Girls"...
As I continue to download more music and listen more to the cd's Adam sent to me (Thanks!), I expect we'll see a far more active chart than we have seen in the past several weeks...
Until next week...
