COMMENTARY ON THIS WEEK'S TOP 50:
Hopefully, this week's chart appearance is a little better than last week's...I took everyone's suggestions and left the title and artist columns separate and fitted the chart to what should be one screen--let me know if you're seeing otherwise...
Anyway, Kylie ties her own record as "Can't Get You Out of My Head" holds #1 a seventh week...in 2001, Minogue spent seven consecutive weeks at #1 with her international smash "Your Disco Needs You"...if Kylie can hold the top spot for another week, "CGYOOMH" will tie Aubrey's eight-week record as the longest running #1 with "Stand Still"...to hold the top spot, Kylie will face her second single from FEVER called "In Your Eyes," which moves up to #5 this week and Sophie Ellis-Bexter's smash "Murder on the Dancefloor," which scoots up to #7 this week...
Gabrielle moves up to #3 again with "Don't Need the Sun to Shine (To Make Me Smile)," a song that peaked at #2 in late 2001...as she dislodges Riva featuring Kylie Minogue for a spot in the top 3, Gabrielle also scores a seventh top 10 hit with "If I Walked Away," a track from her greatest hits package (Dreams, Rise, Sunshine, Out of Reach, Over You, Don't Need... all hit the top 10)...Gabrielle has been having incredible Top 50 success, taking the #1 song of the year for both 2000 and 2001 with "Rise" and "Out of Reach," respectively...
Atomic Kitten scratches its way into the top 10 for a second time with "You Are," a song that is currently running up the World Music Charts...Kitten ties the peak of their only other Top 50 hit, "Whole Again," which hit #9...
As Leann Rimes enters the top 20 on the Billboard Hot 100, she continues her ride up the Top 50 with "Can't Fight the Moonlight (Remix)"...this song has had an amazing life as it was originally released in late 2000...Rimes also moves up to #37 with her latest "Soon (Remix)"...
Britney Spears takes this week's COMBO HIT as "I'm Not a Girl, Not Yet a Woman" rockets nine positions to #18...this is Spears' eight top 20 hit following the #1 "Baby...One More Time," the #2 hit "(You Drive Me) Crazy," the #6 hit "Stronger," the #4 hit "Don't Let Me Be the Last to Know (Remix)," the #9 hit "I'm a Slave 4 U," and the top 20 hits "Sometimes" and "From the Bottom of My Broken Heart"...you have to give the girl credit, I think her career has lasted a lot longer than anyone expected but with her movie CROSSROADS, you could be following Mariah to an oblivion...hmmm??
Laura Branigan steals AIRPLAY/SALES HIT with her version of ABBA's "The Winner Takes it All"...now, this song has really gotten some bad press from chart club members, but my recommendation is the Main Mix of the song...it is the best and sticks more to the lyrical flow of the original...now I know it's hard to top ABBA, but if there was someone doing a cover of an ABBA song, at least it's someone who can really sing...the song moves up to #24 this week...
It was an incredibly slow week for me for new music as I didn't download a single song...next week hopes to be better as work should allow a bit more free time...anyway, we have three debuts this week: Jennifer Lopez barely left the chart before rebounding and returning with "Ain't it Funny" (the non-Ja Rule version, of course!)...the song originally spent three weeks at #5 and is Lopez's biggest Top 50 hit (point total)...it comes back into the survey at #44...at #46 is the ninth Top 50 hit from Madonna's MUSIC...now I know I said I was finished with the album, but I ended up listening to it quite a bit this week and even burned a copy of "Paradise..." to another cd...the only track that hasn't charted from the album is "Nobody's Perfect," which was, ironically, my favorite track when I first listened to the album...at #47 is Kaci's version of the Partridge Family's classic "I Think I Love You"...
Without a lot of chart action, several records are able to make a rebound this week: "Rapture" edges up two notches to #26--the song originally hit #7...Reina rebounds into the top 30 with her second Top 50 hit "Got a Love for You," at #29 this week...Suzanne Palmer's "Hide U" jumps an impressive eight positions to #33 this week--the song hit #27 a few weeks ago...
While some songs benefit from the not-so-crowded lower portion of the chart, songs in the top 20 take a hit with the crowdedness of the top portion of the chart...Shakira's first Top 50 "Whenever, Wherever" falls to #14 after a single week at #11...Depeche Mode's "Freelove'" plunges to #19 after two weeks at #6...the biggest hit of them all is taken by Steps--they see two songs plummet from the top 10: "Words Are Not Enough" (#8-#20) and "I Know Him So Well" (#5-#23)...Nelly Furtado's second and biggest Top 50 hit can't hold onto her space in the top 30 and trips down the chart from #30 to #39...
Hopefully next week's chart offers more in new music...until then...
