COMMENTARY ON THIS WEEK'S TOP 50:
ROBBIE IS SUPREME...The nine-week record of single week #1 hits is now official as Robbie Williams scores a second week at the pole position with his highest charter to date on the Top 50, "Supreme." Williams has the first multiple-week chart topper since Tiffany scored three weeks in November with "I'm Not Sleeping." Williams has the chance to score a third week himself should the song be able to hold off the two top spot hopefuls that are within striking distance.
IF I ONLY HAD A LAST NAME...Mel C scores her highest charting single to date with "If That Were Me," which moves to #3 this week, besting the four-week #4 hit "I Turn to You." Krisine W inches up to #6 this week with the fifth top 10 from STRONGER called "Let Love Reign." Both of these women will challenge the British popster for the #1 position next week. Speaking of Kristine W, her record setting "Lovin' You" moves back into the top 10 to score its twenty-first non-consecutive top 10 week. "Lovin' You" also has the honor of being the longest running #1 since 1991 when Madonna spent seven weeks atop the chart with "Justify My Love."
WHAT IS DA BUZZ ALL ABOUT...I'll tell you what it's about..."Let Me Love You" holds steady at #2 for a second week after spending a single week at #1. And this week's DEBUT HIT belongs to the group as "Do You Want Me" debuts at #33. Look for "Do You.." to quickly move up the chart while "Let Me..." will likely hang around the chart's upper regions for a while. I cannot get enough of these songs!!
RUNAWAY HIT...You can call her "boy toy" and you can call her "Material Girl" but she is definitely Miss Top 10. Madonna scores the third top 10 from her MUSIC album, as well as the 60th top 10 of her career, with "Runaway Lover," which moves from #14 to #10 this week. Of her 63 Top 50 hits, the only songs not to make it to #1 were: "Everybody" (#25); "Burning Up" (#35); "Holiday" (#5); "Lucky Star" (#3); "Borderline" (#2); "Angel" (#5); "Dress You Up" (#3); "Where's the Party?" (#2); "True Blue" (#3); "Human Nature" (#2); "Crazy for You" (rechart) (#2); "You Must Love Me" (#5); "Don't Cry For Me Argentina" (#4); "Skin" (#9); and "Vogue 2000" (#40). Madonna, of course, is by far the most successful artist on Craig's Top 50 and it's going to take years and years for anyone to take over that throne.
Elsewhere on the chart, UK dance artist Fragma scores its first top 10 hit at #9 with "Everytime You Need Me." Sonique is just a couple of positions away from scoring her second top 10 with "I Put a Spell on You," which skips to #12 this week. Sade, Roxette, and Cyndi Lauper all return to the top 20 this week with their latest hits.
IF YOU'RE A NUMBER ONE...Taking SALES HIT this week is a song that I am growing to love more and more each time I hear it. "If You're Gone" moves eleven notches to #21 to become matchbox twenty's highest charting Top 50. I jumped on the bandwagon for this song a little late, but at least I made it. I look for this tune to zoom into the top 10 in the next couple of weeks. Right behind it at #22 is S Club 7 with this week's AIRPLAY HIT called "You're My Number One." S Club 7 hit #11 last year with their first Top 50 "Natural." This week's COMBO HIT (although just edging out S Club 7) belongs to the superstar duo Ricky Martin and Christina Aguilera with their radio/video version of "Nobody Wants to Be Lonely." The song rockets from #39 to #26 in its second chart week.
HOLA...AGAIN...Toni Braxton scores her eighth Top 50 hit with, well, her eighth Top 50 hit. Fueled by a grand remix and her spectacular--a knee and ankle injury can't stop me--performance on the AMA's, "Spanish Guitar" reenters the Top 50 this week at a more than healthy #35. The original charting of the song in the Autumn of 2000 left it at a peak of only #22. Braxton has three #1 songs to her credit--"Breathe Again," "Unbreak My Heart," and "I Don't Want."
THANK YOU FOR THE MUSIC: Two UK teen pop sensations make a debut on the Top 50 this week. At #43 is the ninth charter for Steps (Steps charted eight tunes last year). "It's the Way You Make Me Feel" is yet another pop ditty from the unstoppable fivesome. With Britney Spears-esque vocals (which they could do without) and a hook you can't resist, this one has the potential to renew the hit status lost with their two previous charters, "Heartbeat" and "Stomp." The A*Teens score their fourth Top 50 hit and their first Top 50 not riding on the familiarity of ABBA tunes. "Bouncing Off the Ceiling (Upside Down)" is a great song and it debuts at #45, but I almost cried laughing when I realized the first line of the song is "My grades are down from A's to B's.." I thought to myself, geesh Craig, you are just too old to be liking this song. It is, however, refreshing to hear some original work by the gang! And finally, M People frontwoman Heather Small scores her first solo Top 50 and the second of two songs from the SHOWTIME series QUEER AS FOLK. "Proud" certainly is not a "One Night in Heaven," "Sight for Sore Eyes," or "Itchycoo Park," but it is nevertheless a great tune and showcases the very enjoyable Small. The song debuts at #46.
WORLD MUSIC...And no, I don't mean Latin or Reggae or Polka. I am talking about Aurora featuring Naimee Coleman and ATC with "Ordinary World," moving to #28 this week, and "Around the World," moving to #29 this week, respectively. These two 'world' songs are in the middle of what is again for the second consecutive week the most crowded portion of the chart. Between #19 and #31, there is only one unbulleted record. The songs making decent point gains and moves up the chart this week include tunes by Roxette, Cyndi Lauper, matchbox twenty ("If you're gone, well baby it's time to come home..."), S Club 7, Elton John/Mary J. Blige (with her biggest chart hit), U2, Ricky Martin/Christina Aguilera, Aurora, ATC, Andreas Johnson, and Backstreet Boys. BSB should continue to make a sprint toward the top of the chart with "The Call," which is their fastest charting single to date. The song just missed being awarding a point gainer award for the week and with it being burned to cd this week should be able to make impressive moves next week.
A couple of records lose ground and take a tumble this week. Lara Fabian's second top 3 falls to #7 after two weeks at #3. Fisher's first Top 50 stalled last week for a second week at #20 and plummets to #47. Freefalling to #49 this week is Craig David's first Top 50, which peaked at #21 last week. It's not a good week for Craig's (except for me) as UK fave Craig's first Top 50 hit holds #50 for a second week. Also staying put on the chart are songs by Kylie Minogue (#5 for a second week) and Reina (#4 for a second week).
A reminder to anyone who is interested in my posting of music reviews on the REVIEWS site (see the link below) that I need songs to post for February. As always, I look forward to hearing from you.
Be healthy, be safe, and most of all be happy!!! Lots of love your way....
Craig
