Supreme:  Robbie Williams

5 #1/1wk first #1 hit

COMMENTARY ON THIS WEEK'S TOP 50:

For the ninth consecutive week (a record for Craig's Top 50), we have a new #1 song.  International pop superstar Robbie Williams scores his first #1 hit with "Supreme," his fourth Top 50 charter.  Williams makes an impressive point gain and jumps from #8 to the pole position.  The song has a fairly decent shot at holding the #1 spot for a second week as its nearest major threat is Mel C's third solo top 10 hit "If That Were Me," which blasts into the top 10 at #6.  Following closely behind Mel C is this week's biggest point gainer, Kristine W's eleventh top 10 "Let Love Reign."  "...Reign" is currently charting as an album track from Kristine W's second album STRONGER but is rumored to have a DJ promo remix out and about.  I have yet to get a copy of it but surely I will.

Speaking of Kristine W, she has three other songs currently charting on the Top 50.  At #8 is her recent #2 smash, "Stronger," which rebounded after beginning its descent of the Top 50.  The song peaked at #4 last week and is already in its twenty-ninth week on the chart.  "Lovin' You," Kristine W's biggest hit on the Top 50 and last year's longest running #1, rebounds this week and moves from #14 to #11.  The song is given this push because of its commercial release on Tuesday, January 16, which included a maxi-single featuring remixes I had not yet heard.  At #17 is last week's #9 hit.  "When the Money's Gone" is a Bruce Roberts project featuring vocals by Elton John and Kristine W.  The song is featured on the soundtrack to the movie FLAWLESS starring Robert DeNiro (not a great movie, but not a bad one either--it's a little slow, but I had to watch it to the end).  W is set to score many more Top 50 hits with other tracks from the STRONGER album.

Taking the second place point gain is Sonique's third Top 50 hit.  "I Put a Spell on You" rockets up ten positions on this week's chart to land at #18.  She peaked at #6 in early 2000 with "It Feels So Good" and hit #22 with "Sky" in late 2000.  Scoring third place point gains is Cyndi Lauper's "Higher Plane."  The song makes a move from #40 to #31 is a very crowded lower half of the chart.

Making this week's top debut on the survey at #39 is the sixth Top 50 for Ricky Martin and the fifth Top 50 for Christina Aguilera.  The two team up for the Martin SOUND LOADED track (originally a solo hit, rerecorded as a duet) "Nobody Wants to Be Lonely."  As I am not a huge Aguilera fan and Martin's new music is somewhat boring after the exceptional RICKY MARTIN album, this duet surprised me when I first heard it because the two sound terrific together.   The solo Martin version would likely have charted well had the duet version not been made available via Napster and radio.

Also making debuts this week are two Top 50 first timers.  At #50, UK sensation Craig debuts "At This Time Of Year" and Vernessa Mitchelle has "Issues" at #48.  Gabrielle also premiers her fifth Top 50 hit, "Should I Stay," at #46.  This is Gabrielle's fourth Top 50 from the album RISE ("Rise" #1; "When A Woman" #49; "Sunshine" #15).  Just a couple of notches below her debut, Gabrielle also breaks a Top 50 record.  She scores her thirty-first week on the Top 50, just edging Anastacia and Victoria Newton who held the record for most weeks in the Top 50 at thirty (with "I'm Outta Love" and "Martha's Harbour," respectively--the only chart hit for either artist).  "Rise" is at #44 this week and will likely face a challenge for this new record as soon as three weeks when "Stronger" by Kristine W will be hitting its thirty-second chart week.  Considering the life of these two records and the currently charting "Lovin' You" and their bouncing up and down the chart, it should be interesting to see who comes out the victor.

Where the top half of the chart is pretty empty, the higher positions of the lower half of the Top 50 is jammed with potential hits.  In the eleven positions from #30 to #40, only two songs are not gaining points and most are gaining tremendous points.  Songs by U2, Cyndi Lauper, S Club 7, Aurora, Andreas Johnson, Ricky and Christina, and Backstreet Boys seem to have the most chart potential at this point.

What goes up, must come down, and some records do just that or at least seem to have run out of steam.  "Let Me Love You" by Da Buzz scored a single week at #1 and slips to #2 this week.  Lara Fabian's second top 3 hit "I Am Who I Am" seemed destined for #1, but has stopped gaining points in its second week at #3.  Kristine W's rebounding "Stronger" stalled at #4 last week and drops back to #8 this week.  Leann Rimes' second top 10 hit "Can't Fight the Moonlight" and Bruce Roberts first hit "When the Money's Gone" peaked at #10 and #9 last week and fall back to #13 and #17, respectively.  Fisher's "I Will Love You" seems to be losing steam as it stalls at #20 a second week and doesn't gain enough points to earn a bullet.  After two weeks at #36, David Gray's first Top 50 "Babylon" tumbles to #47.

Also noteworthy is the rebounding "You Make Me Sick" by Pink.  The song fell to #44 last week after peaking at #40 two weeks ago and this week it hops up to #41.  I've been giving the song another chance because I heard it on the digital cable dance channel and it sounded different.  I actually enjoyed it.  So we will see what happens with it?

Next week:  Can Robbie Williams maintain the top spot with this first #1 or will strong records by Mel C or Kristine W take the throne?

As always, charts, comments, emails, whatever are welcome.  Also, check out "Mt. Vernon Square."  Episode One is up now and Episode Two will be published sometime over the weekend.

Be safe, be happy, be healthy, and live life!

Craig
