COMMENTARY ON THIS WEEK'S TOP 50:
Better not kill this groove...Sophie Ellis-Bexter has 2002's first big debut week as her first Top 50 hit lands at an impressive #25. I fell in love with "Murder on the Dancefloor" on first listen. Very Very Very disco, this track could get even the most serious of wall-flowers dancing the night away. While I've read a lot of posts in the clubs about Ellis-Bexter, I never actually heard the song until last weekend when she appeared on Top of the Pops. I, of course, immediately burned this one to a cd and have been grooving to it since.
Can't Get You Out of the Top Spot...Kylie Minogue fends off Kim Wilde's "Loved" (spending a second week at #2) as "Can't Get You Out of My Head" logs a fifth non-consecutive week at #1. The songs are running neck and neck with points but Kylie remains victorious over what was certain to become Wilde's fourth #1 two weeks ago. Elsewhere on the chart, Minogue is making huge strides with the second single from FEVER. "In Your Eyes" takes COMBO HIT for the second consecutive week and takes a leap from #30 to #18 in its third chart week.
Stepping Up to the Top 10...again...Steps scores yet another top 10 hit as "Words Are Not Enough" moves up four places to #10, following the B-side to its single "I Know Him So Well," which moves up to #5 this week. Appropriately enough, what could be Steps last two Top 50 chart entries are characteristic of the past two years and Steps' success on the chart. Generally, Steps charted multiple tunes at once and every one of their sixteen Top 50 hits have made it to the top 20 except two ("Stomp" and "Heartbeat"). "...So Well" is the group's seventh top 5 hit, including two #1 hits ("One for Sorrow" and "Better the Devil You Know").
Rising again...Gabrielle just can't seem to stay away from the top 10...As a couple of her previous #1 hits have done, "Don't Need the Sun to Shine (To Make Me Smile)" makes a return to the top 10 this week, moving from #12 to #8...the song's chart run can be compared to those of "Rise" and "Out of Reach"...Gabrielle's recent #2 hit is accompanied on the chart by "If I Walked Away," the second of two new songs from her greatest hits package DREAMS CAN COME TRUE...the song makes a move to #24 this week...
Rimes with Nails...Sales...as in SALES HIT--which is Leann Rimes second charting of the originally released 2000 hit "Can't Fight the Moonlight"...Rimes continues to run the charts with this tune from the soundtrack to COYOTE UGLY...it makes an eleven place move this week from #38 to #27...the song hit #2 in 2001 and finished at #12 for the year...Just missing the SALES HIT award is Cher's "(This is) A Song for the Lonely," the first US single from LIVING PROOF...the song scoots to #26 after a debut last week at #36...Cher's recent #1 lead-off European single to the song is at #14 this week...
Talking About Love...Melanie Thornton continues her posthumous assault on the chart as her second Top 50 hit "Love How You Love Me" takes AIRPLAY HIT at #35...the song follows the top 5 hit "Makin' Oooh Oooh (Talking About Love)," which is at #37 this week...
And the Winner Is...For the second time in as many years, a cover version of ABBA's classic "The Winner Takes it All" makes an appearance on the chart...in 2000, Hazell Dean scored a #9 hit with the song (originally recorded in the mid-90's and included in the 98 tribute to ABBA)...now 80's super-voice Laura Branigan brings her own rendition of the song--remixed and dance ready...the song debuts at #39 this week and is Branigan's first chart appearance since she charted in the top 25 with her version of Donna Summer's "Dim All the Lights"...
Other first Impressions...Three other songs make their debuts on the Top 50 this week...at #40 is Dreamcatcher's first Top 50 hit, "I Don't Want to Lose My Way"...I saw the song performed on Top of the Pops last week...at #45 is the second Top 50 for Angelic called "It's My Turn"...her first Top 50 is currently at #49...Finally, Natalie Imbruglia scores a second Top 50 from her latest album (this is her fourth Top 50 hit in total)..."Wrong Impression" is the first US single, but is the follow-up to the first international single release "That Day," which stalled at #11...
Look for new music from Leann Rimes, Belinda Carlisle, Brandy, Lonnie Gordon, the Corrs, and Kaci in the coming weeks...
