COMMENTARY ON THIS WEEK'S TOP 50:
So it's the second chart of the new year and we have our second number one. The last title to spend more than one week at the top was Tiffany's "I'm Not Sleeping" and it finished its run in the pole position on 11/18/00. Since then, "Forever" by Tina Cousins, "On A Night Like This" by Kylie Minogue, "Killin' Time" by Tina Cousins, "Independent Women Part 1" by Destinys Child, "The Dance" by Rockell, "Don't Tell Me" by Madonna, and "Girl From the Gutter" by Kina have each spent a single week at #1. This is my chart's quickest top spot turnover that I can remember. This week, pop act Da Buzz scores their first #1 hit with the great "Let Me Love You." It is completely up in the air at this point as to whether or not this song can log a second week at the top.
The chart is full of huge movers this week, and the first moves fifteen places into the top 10 from #23. Robbie Williams scores his second (yes, only his second--"Angels" hit #7) top 10 hit with his latest single "Supreme." This is also Williams fastest charting single to date and scores both the Airplay and Sales awards this week. This one could pose a threat to Da Buzz and #1 as early as next week. The only problem the song may have is that Williams' records tend to have a quick burn factor with me. However, I don't think I've enjoyed his other music as much as I am enjoying this one.
Also moving into the top 10 this week is Kristine W's ninth top 10 charter. She is a featured artist, with Elton John, on the Bruce Roberts hit from the movie FLAWLESS called "When the Money's Gone" and the song scoots to #9 from #12. Leann Rimes scores her second top 10 hit with "Can't Fight the Moonlight," moving five positions to #10 ("I Need You" just missed the top 10 in 2000 and "How Do I Live?" was a #1 hit).
Just missing the top 10 this week is the COMBO Hit for the second consecutive week, "If That Were Me" by Mel C. The third Top 50 from NORTHERN STAR, this is Mel's fastest charting record to date and should easily become her third consecutive top 5 hit, if not her first #1. The song moves a whopping fourteen positions from #25. As I've said before, if you haven't heard this one, definitely check it out--my fave from Mel C so far!!
Another super powerful song makes an eleven place move this week. Kristine W's tenth Top 50 rockets from #26 to #15 in its second chart week. The song just misses taking a point gain award this week. I expect that this will quickly become Kristine W's tenth top 10 hit. Ms. W currently has four songs charting on the Top 50 including "Stronger" (#4), "When the Money's Gone" (#9), and "Lovin' You" (#14). It looks as though she will have yet another great year on the Top 50 (she ended 2000 with 4 top 10 finishers (#2,3,4,10).
Other records making impressive moves this week include: Madonna's "Runaway Lover" (#33-23); Thunderpuss f. Jocelyn Enriquez with "So Fabulous, So Fierce" (#39-30); "By Your Side" by Sade (#42-31); and U2's "Beautiful Day" (#49-39). Each of these records is storming up the charts.
With all of the quick upward chart action, some veteran hit makers seem to have fallen victim to the crowded upper regions of the chart. Both of Steps' current Top 50 hits hit their peak last week and take a tumble this week. "Stomp" falls to #42 after a single week at #29 and "Heartbeat" slips to #32 after hitting #21. Amber's current Top 50 hits become her first two non-top 10 charters as they reverse and head down the chart this week. "Do That To Me One More Time" drops to #21 after a single week at #19 and after two weeks at #16, "Taste the Tears" hops back to #17.
Other victims of the big chart movers include: "Sunshine" by Gabrielle (#7-12); Everything but the Girl's "Lullaby of Clubland" (#9-18); the second life of "Freedom" by Erasure (#10-19); Jessica Williams with "I Am Woman" (#22-25); David Gray's "Babylon" (#36/2wks); and Pink's "You Make Me Sick" (#40-44)--the latter more on that fact that it sucks!!
Returning to the chart this week for the first time since 1999's "Disco Inferno" (#17) is Cyndi Lauper. She has landed on the edel America record label and although plans to release "Higher Plane" as a commercial single were scrapped, the song did find its way to the internet and I was fortunate enough to be able to grab a copy. It's a great little Lauper song with similarities to the singles from SISTERS OF AVALON.
S Club 7 scores its second Top 50 with a great little pop/dance tune called "You're My Number One." In retrospect, I should probably have given "Natural" (#11) a longer chart life, but I guess I didn't find it quite as catchy as this follow up.
Debuting with an incredible upbeat cover of Duran Duran's #1 hit "Ordinary World" is Aurora featuring Naimee Colemen. This great little dance number keeps much of the original but takes it to the next level. One of my favorite songs and a cover worthy of its original.
Andreas Johnson makes his debut on the Top 50 with "Glorious." This great little pop/rock tune is one that I fell in love with the first time I heard it. I saw the video on Tuesday night as well and it's not too bad. Also making a dive into the Top 50 is Barry Harris with the theme from the SHOWTIME series QUEER AS FOLK. "Dive in the Pool" is a great house tune. It gets me moving!!
Finally, the Backstreet Boys have a potential hit with the second charting Top 50 from their BLACK AND BLUE project. "The Call" is an NSync-ish upbeat pop number that is one of the BSB's most enjoyable releases. Could this one be the song that breaks their chart peak of #11 ("I'll Never Break Your Heart" and "The One")??
Until next time, remember to check out the rest of my site and send me your reviews, charts, comments, etc.
