Get the Party Started: Pink |

COMMENTARY ON THIS WEEK'S TOP 50:
So it's a new year at Craig's Top 50 and the chart reflects how my listening habits have changed--I got a cd changer for my car for Xmas and a couple of new cd's...let's get right to it...
Pretty in Pink..."Get the Party Started" becomes Pink's first #1 on the Top 50 as it jumps over Cher's "The Music's No Good Without You" from the #3 position...if you haven't heard MISSUNDAZTOOD, most definitely check it out...most of the songs were cowritten by Pink and Linda Perry (of 4 Non-Blondes fame)...the album is so not like her first album as it's rockier and bluesier...there's even a duet with Steven Tyler of Aerosmith...Pink will likely secure the top spot for just a week as Kim Wilde blasts into the top 10 with her comeback single "Loved"--it moves from #13 to #3 in its fourth chart week...I expect she will easily snag her fourth #1 hit (following "You Keep Me Hangin' On," "You Came," and "If I Can't Have You")...
Hot for Kylie...FEVER is a wonderful album and has so many potential hits on it that it's unreal...Billboard reported this week that the US release of FEVER due February 26 and backed in 2002 with a North American tour will actually feature the same track listing as the overseas version of the album (earlier reports hinted that the US release would be a combination of LIGHT YEARS and FEVER)...anyway, Kylie returns to the top 10 with her 2001 #1 single "Can't Get You Out of My Head"...the song should easily cruise through the top 10 once again and may even have the power to challenge Wilde's potential #1 for the top spot...Yesterday, I watched the first ever Top of the Pops Awards on BBC America...Kylie performed flawlessly "...Head" and picked up two awards--Best Tour (beating Madonna's "Drowned World" tour) and Best Single (for "Can't...")...I love this woman and can't wait to see her live...as her first single continues to work the charts, she debuts the second single from the FEVER album at #40--"In Your Eyes" is seeing a release in Australia (I'm not sure about the UK) and is a great tune...it's more of the same edgey pop of its predecessor...as I've said in my 2001 Year End commentary...Kylie is going to own 2002!!
Geri Halliwell returns to the top 5 this week for the first time in almost two years..."Calling" moves up to #4 and is one position away from tying her biggest chart hit "Mi Chico Latino," which spent two weeks at #3 in early 2000...Also in the top 10, Riva featuring Dannii Minogue makes a healthy move from #9 to #6 with "Who Do You Love Now"...IIO's "Rapture (Tastes So Sweet)" edges up a notch to #9 this week...if you haven't heard this song, check it out--a great dance record...
Now-defunct group Steps scores its tenth top 10 hit with a cover of "I Know Him So Well"...the song jumps four places to #10 and is the fourth time they've hit the top 10 covering a song..."Tragedy" hit #5, "Better the Devil You Know" hit #1, and "Chain Reaction" hit #2...Steps also continues moving up the chart with the A-Side to their current single, "Words Are Not Enough," which lands at #17 this week...
With an active top 10 this week, a few records take a hit...Melanie Thornton's first solo Top 50 hit #5 last week and tumbles to #12 this week..."Makin' Oooh Oooh (Talking About Love)" will most certainly be followed by more hits as I'm loving this woman's music...Madonna's "Impressive Instant," the final #1 of 2001, takes a huge fall to #8...it was Madonna's fourth #1 from MUSIC, an album that produced hit singles from 2000 on...Depeche Mode's "Freelove," while seemingly losing steam, will likely pick up a bit next week...it holds at #11 for a second week...Enrique Iglesias peaked at #8 with "Hero" last week and this week stumbles to #14...the song has already logged fourteen weeks on the chart--a healthy run for any song...Lara Fabian's "The Dream Within" stalls at #29 and slips to #36 this week...I thought this one would do a bit better than her other charted ballad "Love by Grace," but alas, I have grown tired of it...a good dance mix could save this tune but I have yet to find one...
Infinito featuring Kym Mazelle steals the AIRPLAY HIT this week as "Dance Little Dreamer" moves up to #27 in its second chart week...this is one of those feel good songs...the lyrics aren't particularly strong and there's nothing musically unique about it--it just makes me feel good...Atomic Kitten, also featured on Top of the Pops, jumps up ten places to #30 with "You Are," this week's SALES HIT...it's the group's second Top 50 following the #9 hit "Whole Again"...COMBO HIT belongs to a song that is finally getting my attention...Five for Fighting's first Top 50 hit "Superman (It's Not Easy Being Me)" easily snags COMBO HIT and is quickly riding up my airplay chart...
If everyone remembers, I totally promoted Hypnogaja last year (they debut "Star" at #50 this week) and now I'm all about Sky Tyler...this pop/R&B artist should easily snag a place on radio as she fits in most formats--AC, Pop, Top 40, R&B...her first Top 50 hit is the incredible "I'm Not Alone Anymore," which takes DEBUT HIT and comes in at #38...expect big things in 2002 from this girl...if anyone wants more information about her, please email me and I will give you her information...
Gabrielle debuts the second new song from DREAMS CAN COME TRUE--GREATEST HIT..."If I Walked Away" is yet another beautiful pop ballad and should keep Gabrielle's chart hit streak going...it comes into the chart at #43...after seeing the remix video for Dido's "Hunter," I realized I was really ignoring the best song on the album...the song finally enters my chart at #45 this week, fueled by both the remix and album version...Top of the Pops featured Nelly Furtado opening the awards show and she was incredible...I've really been neglecting giving this artist a chance so in revisiting her current single "Turn Off the Light," I actually decided that I like it...the song debuts at #47...
What can we expect from 2002? Look for lots of Kylie...Look for lots of Pink...Look for lots of Cher...Maybe we'll see a new Madonna album...a new Gabrielle album...an album from Abigail...and more music from Aubrey...
Happy New Year to all!!! Comments appreciated craigtop50@aol.com
Enjoy and be well...
